Top 5 Blind Anime Characters

Fujitora and Doflamingo clash
Fujitora and Doflamingo clash

If you’re familiar with anime, action movies, or martial arts film then you probably noticed the legendary blind weapon master. Despite their inability to see they are often the most deadly fighters. Sometimes they have developed supernatural powers to compensate for their blindness or have trained to use other senses. While the audience probably expects the blind weapon master to be dangerous the characters in the story usually don’t. This results in the blind warrior being underestimated, gaining an advantage at least at first. So what are my top 5 blind characters:

5. Kaname Tosen (Bleach)

Tosen was the captain of the 9th Division of the Gotei 13. He joined Sosuke Aizen and Gin Ichimaru when they betrayed Soul Society. Tosen was blind since birth. Tosen was proficient with his Zanpakuto. As a 5th seat, he was able to fight at Captain level. After his defection, he encountered Captain Sajin Komamura and Lieutenant Shuhei Hisagi and was able to duel them both. He mastered the Shunpo, Kido, and Hikuda techniques. Like most Captain level Shinigami’s, he also mastered the Shikai and Banki abilities. Tosen develops a Resurreccion form. Ironically, Tosen gains sight in this form and it results in his downfall.

4. Uzu Sanageyama (Kill La Kill)

Uzu is one of the students on the Elite Four council. He regulates the athletic clubs at Honnoji Academy. He has his eyes sewn shut to increase his awareness. He develops a “Mind’s Eye” that allows him to form a “three-dimensional image of his surroundings, resulting in clairvoyant abilities. He’s an expert Swordsman, using a kendo style. With this style, he displays precision and reflexes. When he had access to the Three-star Goku Uniform, he possessed the Shinsoku: Senbonsuki ability which allowed him to “attaches multiple shinai blades to his hands and spins them at high speeds, allowing him to assault his opponent with a series of high-speed sword thrusts”. Uzu also developed the Blade Regalia MK 2 and the Blade Regalia: Secret Unsealed. Uzu’s self-inflicted blindness resembles the legend of Shinto God, Susano’o.

3. Yomi (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Yomi is one of the Three Kings of the Demon Realm and the main antagonist during the three Kings Saga. Yomi uses to have sight but lost it due to a plot by Kurama, he gained four extra ears to compensate. His earing was so amazing that he could “hear every word being spoken in his kingdom of Gandara”. He can hear heart rates, guessing facial expressions, and emotional states. Like Kurama, Yomi is calm, calculating, even able to use his super-hearing to measure the speeds of his opponent’s attack. Yomi possesses a Demon Absorption Wall, energy blasts, and is an upper S class demon.

2. Sara (Samurai Champloo)

A beautiful blind musician, Sara turns out to be an assassin for the Shogunate. She walks barefoot and carries a Shamisen and a Yari disguised as a walking staff. Sara has had a hard life due to her blindness. Her child was taken from her over it and is often pitied, which she hates. Sara is capable of predicting moves, her fighting ability is considered to be one of the strongest in Samurai Champloo. She could notice Sundar rocks with her Yari, her skill is so great that Kariya Kagetoki deems Mugen and Jin worthy of being defeated by him. Ultimately, Sara learns that her son was killed and she allows herself to be killed by Mugen.

1. Issho Fujitora (One Piece)

One of the new Marine Admirals, Issho is against the hashish forms of Marine justice. He hates corruption and evil. Issho intentionally blinded himself to “avoid ever seeing it again”, cutting himself leaving an X-shaped scar on his face. He regrets having done so. He hated the now-disbanded Shichibukai system and often undermines the Marines. Like many blind warriors, he’s always underestimated and he resents it. As a Marine Admiral, Fujitora is one of the strongest fighters in the World government. He was able to defeat Jack, a pirate with a billion-dollar bounty. He fought Sabo to a standstill without getting hurt, posses great strength, defense, and reflexes.

He claims to have developed heighten senses, able to “sense the movement of clouds”. Fujitora prefers to use his shikomizue (cane sword) in conjunction with his devil fruit, Zushi Zushi no Mi. As Ragyo goes into the tradition bad guy laugh, she is pierced by Senketsu. When Ragyo asks how its possible, Senketsu response that its “neither human or clothing”. Heart broken Ryuko appears to resolve herself to crashing to the Earth. However, Satsuki along with everyone else at the academy brace her fall.

Kill 24.15

Opinion:

The Finally of Kill La Kill was bitter sweet. I thoroughly enjoy both this episode and the series. I liked the balance of character participation in the episode, even though Ryuko finally takes over.  Ryuko basically going “Super Saiyan” was cool, but I found the name “Senketsu Fashion Week” to be a little silly.

I was disappointed that there wasn’t more in depth fighting against Ragyo at the end. I wished there was more team work between Ryuko and Satsuki, but was satisfied that Ryuko finally acknowledge that Satsuki is her sister. Absolute Domination was anything but Absolute or Dominating, but it probably was impossible to be too powerful.

Gamagoori clearly is in love with Mako, and I’m surprise that he had a more dynamic part in this episode compared to the other Devas. The largest aspect of this episode was the death of Senketsu, which I didn’t expect. Even though he wasn’t needed any longer, I though Senketsu would have survived. Overall, I really liked this series, the same elements unsurprisingly appeared in this series also appeared in Gurren Lagann. However, I still think Gurren Lagann was better but not by much, though the animation of both series was spectacular.

Kill La Kill – Episode 21: Recap and Review

Incomplete

This episode opens with a the nude Nui, Ragyo and Ryuko as the explain the fact that Ragyo and Ryuko are the only ones that can wear Junketsu. After kissing Nui, Ryuko fly’s off to face Satsuki. Satsuki and Ryuko exchange words before Satsuki and Senketsu transform. Satsuki synchronizes very quickly with Senketsu.

Kill 21.1

Ryuko mocks Satsuki’s power, in response she uses Senketsu’s “Blade Flash” then Senketsu’s “Gale”. She then improvises and use a combination of the two, “Blade Gale”. Meanwhile, Nui is seen building something rather large with life fibers embedded within it.

Ryuko appear mildly damaged by Satsuki’s attack, she mocks Senketsu’s look as being ” half-assed”. She say’s that Senketsu is “ugly”, Satsuki on the other hand defends Senketsu as a sign of “human ingenuity”. She states that Senketsu is design to maximize its power without over taking the host.

Kill 21.2

Ryuko seems to be completely taken over by Junketsu’s power, and she quickly begins to dominate Satsuki. The Four Devas intervene almost managing to rip Junketsu off. However, Nui arrives to save her and tells the others that Junketsu is sewed onto Ryuko. Mako “leaps into action”, as the COVER’s are release to overtake mankind. Ragyo begins the “Genesis of the cocoon planet”, the original life fiber begins to travel to “where it all began”.

Kill 21.4

Ryuko continues to dominate Satsuki and the four Devas, and she manages to rip Senketsu. Mako arrives and gives her usually long winded speeches, Nui decides to kill her. Senketsu saves her and in the process takes some of her blood. Satsuki now naked engages in battle with Nui, where she suspects that Nui doesn’t trust the control they have over Ryuko.

She states that Nui reluctance to give Ryuko the other half of the scissor shows that she is “still a touch anxious”. Three of the Four Devas arrive to battle Nui as Satsuki turn her attention to Ryuko. Nui orders Ryuko to kill Mako and Senketsu, Mako’s family interferes. As she aims to kill them Satsuki arrives and cut a wound in Ryuko. She orders Mako and Senketsu to enter, forcing Ryuko to release Junketsu.

Kill 21.7

While within Ryuko we get a strange encounter between Mako, Senketsu and Ryuko. She slices through Senketsu, who in turn gushes blood. Nui assumes that their attempt to change her mind fail, but when her back is turned Ryuko throws her Scissor through it. Enraged she rips of Junketsu, preparing to die while she does it.

Kill 21.8

Opinion:

This episode feature a lot of action and it’s more than worth the wait. The unpredictability of this episode was the most enjoyable. I couldn’t tell which way the tide would turn, and whether Satsuki stood a chance.

I was impressed with Satsuki’s abilities as a fighter. I’m hoping that Nui actually dies, she just annoying but I doubt it. I wonder if Junketsu is destroyed or would pieces of it survive being reused for Satsuki.

Kill 21.9

Mako added her usual humor and disruption to this episode, I was surprised by the fact that she appeared in the episode as much as she was. She was very effective in this episode, although I’m disappointed that she didn’t fight with Senketsu though I’m not surprise she didn’t.

Kill La Kill – Episode 20: Recap and Review

Far from the Maddening Crowd

Mako makes one of her speeches after Ryuko claims to no longer be human. Mako say’s that “this isn’t the Ryuko I know” and she responds that she ins’t the same Ryuko. She feels that the “old” her was a fraud and she just a monster. Mako appears sad at this revelation.

Both Nui and Ragyo appear to be paper clones and succeed in convincing Ryuko to meet them at Honnouji Academy. Ryuko still angry aims to fight alone, and lashes out at her friends.

Kill 20.4

Kill 20.8

Nui claims she the “only one that can understand her”, she reveals that she too was born with Life Fibers. Ragyo appears with Junketsu and it seems that Nui had a plan to force Ryuko to wear it. The Four Devas arrive to save Satsuki, while on the Naked Sol Ryuko arrives dressed in Junketsu. Ryuko is unmatched, but Satsuki appears wearing Senketsu.

Kill 20.11

Opinion:

This episode was a very good one, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m not surprise that Nui isn’t “human”, she certainly doesn’t act like it. I wish there was more depth to the fights, however I’d imagine that the next episode will fulfill that need.

Ryuko’s attitude is understandable but I’m starting to find it annoying. That said I find it interesting that Satsuki and Ryuko have seemingly switch places. Overall, this episode left me excited for what’s going to happen next.

Kill La Kill – Episode 19: Recap and Review

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head

The “COVERS” begin their assault on the citizens, even capturing Mako. Ryuko manages to escape with the help of Satsuki using a explosive. 1 month later and the “COVERS” have taken over the town. The four Devas join forces with Nude Beach, and Satsuki’s forces against the Life Fibers appear to be losing.

Kill 19.1

Ryuko is comatose as the Mankanshoku family and Senketsu sit by her side. Meanwhile, Satsuki is captured by her mother. After some more inappropriate touching she tell Satsuki how her father change his appearance and faked his death. When her states that she let her live due to maternal kindness, Satsuki doesn’t believe her.

Kill 19.2

She mentions a name of something or someone ” Shinra-Kouketsu”, her mother is surprised by this. She then begins to spank her daughter to get her to become enraged. Nudist Beach along with the devas battle against the COVER’s. Ira quickly uses their new weapons the “Super Suction Saver” to save Mako.

Kill 19.4

The COVER’s then use a noise technique waking up Ryuko. Enraged she easily dispatches the COVER’s without wearing Senketsu. When Senketsu appears Ryuko tell’s him that she’s “done with him” and “won’t put him on again”.

Kill 19.5

Opinion:

This episode was more relaxed in terms of action. I liked the fact that the Four Devas have joined forces with Nudist Beach. I find the “relationship” between Ira and Mako to be a interesting development.

Satsuki mother clearly has boundary issues, and I wondered what Shinra-Kouketsu is. I not surprised by Ryuko feeling like a “monster”, I can image that the new revelation about her mother and her being part Life Fiber has thrown her for a loop.
