Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 24: Recap and Review

Nobara and Yuji uses Black Flash in episode 24 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Nobara and Yuji uses Black Flash

The first season ends with a perfect episode

Jujutsu Kaisen, episode 24, ends the Death Painting Arc. They executed the last episode of season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen perfectly. I always fear the marginalization of female characters in Shonen series (trauma from Naruto). Often they fall by the waist side and become cheerleaders and damsels. Nobara was heading in that direction. I’m grateful that they did not regulate her to “sakura” status (I love Sakura, but she’s not a great female character). Anyway, Nobara and Yuji face the Death Painting brothers, Eso and Kechizu. The episode opens with high-speed action. Yuji and Nobara attempt to avoid the “poisonous” blood from Eso’s Rot Technique Maximum: Wing King. Nobara isn’t fast enough to avoid the technique’s so Yuji carries her while sprinting. It impressed both Nobara and Eso.

Most Evil Sorcerer in History

Kechizu ambushes them, spraying Yuji with his acidic blood. Eso explains that their blood is painful but not lethal. He activates his Rot Technique Decay. Floral patterns appear across the face and arm of Yuji and Nobara. In a flashback, we learn the history of the Death Painting Wombs. During the Meiji Era, they ostracized a woman because of her child being born with a mixed of cursed spirit and human blood. Afterward, she found herself the victim of the “most evil sorcerer in history,” Noritoshi Kamo. He impregnates her nine times and aborts each pregnancy, creating the Death Wombs. Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t state that there are nine wombs, but it seems like it would make sense. Death Wombs 1-3, Eso, Kechizu, and the introduced Choso side with Mahito.

Choso argues the world Mahito wishes to create is more favorable to them. The three brothers agreed to live for each other. The creation of the wombs is tragic but their relationship with each other is touching. Being trapped for 150 years with only each other has left them alone. With very little time, Jujutsu Kaisen made men like Eso and Kechizu. In the present, Nobara admits the curses are strong but a “matchup” for her. She activates her Straw Doll Technique: Resonance and stabs herself, injuring both Eso and Kechizu. By “linking” them with their Decay ability, Nobara can harm both brothers. Despite this, Eso is certain that they’ll win.

As Sukuna’s vessel, Yuji is afforded several perks. One is that he’s immune to poisons. This permits him to continue moving while under the curses technique and he dominates Kechizu. Yuji and Nobara switch places. Eso attempts to reach his brother before he’s killed. However, Nobara kills Kechizu with Straw Doll Technique: Hairpin. Witnessing his brother die cause Eso to cry. Nobara notices that Kechizu’s corpse didn’t disappear, meaning it’s not just a curse spirit but flesh and blood. When a truck comes barreling out of the tunnel, Eso hops on and takes the passenger hostage. Yuji pursues him, while Nobara uses her Resonance technique, piercing Eso through the chest. As he falls off the truck, Yuji apologizes before killing him with a Divergent Fist through the chest.

What does it mean to take a life

After killing Eso and Kechizu, Nobara and Yuji discuss what’s it like to kill someone. We understand Yuji hates killing any living, even if it’s no longer human. Nobara on the other doesn’t care. She’s self aware enough to know how she sounds, but I like her attitude. However, neither are wrong. Yuji knows why the brothers had to die, but still regrets having to kill them. I would expect they will test both of their morals in the future. Megumi wakes up, and it relieves Yuji and Nobara.

Still, they have to do something with Sukuna’s finger. Megumi gives it to Yuji mainly because he has the most strength, but not so he can eat it. Suddenly, Sukuna manifests a mouth in Yuji’s hand and swallows the finger. It’s one of the subtle comedic moments in this episode. Yuji notes that not only didn’t Sukuna help them, he hasn’t even lead them to fingers like Gojo thought. It’s odd that Sukuna doesn’t appear preoccupied with getting his limbs back.

Later, Megumi tells Nobara that Sukuna’s “incarnation triggered the Yasohachi Bridge curse,” and she should tell Yuji. Elsewhere, Sukuna taunts Yuji for “killing all those people,” Yuji warns Sukuna “not to tell Megumi.” He remembers Megumi asking him “what are you going to do when someone you saved kills someone else?” Yuji saved Megumi by eating Sukuna’s finger and triggered the activation of the bridge curse. From Megumi’s perspective, he’s the person who Yuji saved that caused innocent people to die. He doesn’t want Yuji to feel guilty, and Yuji doesn’t want Megumi to either. Finally, after killing a special grade each, Nobara, Megumi, and Yuji, along with Panda and Maki, are recommended by Aoi Todo and Mei Mei for Grade 1 status. Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season ends with an action pact, emotionally touching, and occasionally funny episode. It’s the perfect ending for an amazing first season.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 23: Recap and Review

Megumi let's loose in episode 23 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Megumi let’s loose

The Origin of Obedience, Part 2

Jujutsu Kaisen’s final arc of the season is fleshing out Megumi Fushiguro’s character. Megumi and Nobara are underdeveloped compared to Yuji. As we head towards the last episode, the trio realize that they’re in the presence of another Sukuna finger. Unfortunately, so are the newly resurrected Death Painting Wombs, Kechizu and Eso. A Cursed Womb: Death Painting are “Special Grade Cursed Objects created with the mixed blood of both Cursed Spirit and human.” There are nine. In the previous episode, Mahito stole Death Paintings 1-3 that Jujutsu High possessed. Kechizu attacks Yuji with acidic blood. It surprised the curse that Yuji is so strong. Meanwhile, Nobara and Megumi play a creepy game of “whack-a-mole.” Suddenly, Eso pulls Nobara out of the domain. Kechizu rushes out the domain to join with his “older brother.” Yuji chases them to help Nobara.

A Special Grade Curse Appears

After Megumi crushes the last curse with his Divine Dog: Totality, he notices the domain doesn’t disappear. A new tunnel appears and a curse similar to the one they fought in the detention center falls. This version of the curse is stronger. It snaps his cursed sword and then knocks him unconscious. In a flashback, we see Megumi and Gojo training. Gojo suggests that Megumi “doesn’t know how to bring out his best.” He reminds Megumi that jujutsu sorcerers fight alone. Gojo says “no matter how many allies a sorcerer has they always die alone.” That’s a very dark claim. It also conflicts with the message that Jujutsu Kaisen is trying to send. In this arc especially, they have emphasized that friendship matters. Is Gojo wrong? Or is the trio going to change what’s possible? It’s likely that Gojo is bitter or cynical after experiencing a tragedy. We’ll find out.

Domain Expansion: Chimera Shadow Garden

Jujutsu Kaisen has been teasing us regarding Megumi’s power. We finally get a glimpse. Picturing himself as a future Megumi that has surpassed his limits, he activates his incomplete Domain. He covers the floor with a shadow that releases darker version’s of his summons. The curse escapes by using a powerful explosion of cursed energy. It’s exorcised by Megumi’s Divine Dog: Totality. With Sukuna’s finger in hand, Megumi falls asleep. Elsewhere, Nobara and Eso sense Sukuna’s finger. Eso goes to get the finger, while Nobara gives chase. The Death Paintings are a weird pair. Their design reminded me of the mech’s from Gurren Lagann. Anyway, the rest of this episode sets up the next battles, Nobara vs Eso and Yuji vs Kechizu. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 23 adds important details to Megumi’s character. He’s steps out of his comfort zone and it pays off.

My Top 5 Demon Slaying Anime

Demon slaying is common in pop culture. They come in several varieties. The hunter who kills demons for revenge. The “chosen one,” who is born to kill demons, or the half demon that a target for full fledge demons. Family raises some demon slayers to fight demons. Specifically, demon slayers are common in anime and manga. In the last few years anime that focuses on “demon slaying” have gain prominence. So what are my top 5 demon slaying anime:

Berserk

Berserk is a little extreme for my tastes. A manga series created by Kentaro Miura, Berserk follows Guts as he fights evil spirits and demons from hell. Guts was cursed with the “Brand of Sacrifice.” As a result, ghosts and demons want to eat him. After the betrayal by his former best friend Griffith, Guts seeks venegance. Born from the womb of a hanged woman, he was raised as a child soldier. The series begins in the middle, establishing Guts character and the setting. It then flashes back revealling Guts tragic childhood.

Berserk is frequently disturbing, including child abuse, torture, sexual violence, and gore. It’s not a series for everyone, however, if you can stomach it the series explores themes like revenge, moralitiy, and coping with a cruel world. Berserk is inspired by Kaoru Kurimoto’s Guin Saga, Buronson’s Fist of the North Star, and Go Nagai’s Devilman. I don’t read the manga but I do search on Pinterest for Miura’s phenominal art work. If anything is going to attract you to this series it’s his art. Unfortunately, the anime often has terrible animation, I don’t recommend them.

Inuyasha

If your looking for a lighter series then Inuyasha is a great series. Rumiko Takahashi created the series in the 90s. The manga was serialized from 1996 to 2008 and the anime ran for seven seasons. Kagome Higurashi is a Middle School student that time travels to feudal Japan. While there she encounters youkai, ghosts, orges, and many other creatures. I really loved this series for it’s use of Japanese mythology. Kagome meets Inuyasha a teenage half-youkai.

Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikiyo, the former girlfriend of Inuyasha. She sealed Inuyasha to a sacred tree 50 years ago and it’s Kagome that frees him. Kagome and Inuyasha begin a dramatic relationship that spans time and space, as Kagome goes back and forth between this world and hers. The series follows the monster of the week structure. Kagome and Inuyasha are joined by friends, Shippo, Miroku, and Sango. Together they batlle againist the forces of Naraku, as they search for the shards of the Shikon jewel.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is the latest entry into the demon slayer anime. While technically, Yuji and his friends exorcise “cursed spirits” I consider them basically the same as demons. Written and illustrated by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen began its run in 2018. The first season of the anime began in 2020. Yuji is a high school student, when his grandfather is about to die, Yuji promises to: do good so others can die the “right” way. When Yuji meets sorcerer Megumi Fushiguro his life changes.

After releasing a cursed object that attracts cursed spirits, Yuji and Megumi rescue them. During this fight, Yuji swallows the cursed object, a finger of the “King of Curses,” Ryomen Sukuna. In doing so he becomes the new vessel of Sukuna. I’ll begin reading the manga after this seasons over, but I reccomend watching the anime. MAPPA is really starting to master their craft and Jujutsu Kaisen benefits from it.

Demon Slayer

Apparently, American audiences favor Jujutsu Kaisen over last years anime darling Demon Slayer. However, Demon Slayer continued to set records in 2020 outselling the One Piece manga and making history in the box office. I think when the Demon Slayer anime returns it will resume its run at the top. The series tells the tragic story of Tanjiro Kamado. After returning from selling charcoal, Tanjiro finds his family slaughtered and his sister Nezuko turned into a demon.

Desperate to turn his sister back and prevent others from being harmed, Tanjiro and Nezuko enbark on a quest to find a cure. Tanjiro joins the Demon Corps. Armed with a katana, the water breathing techniques, and his selfless motivation, Tanjiro battles demons. He joins forces with the dumb prettyboy Inosuke, the powerful coward Zenitsu, and the always sleeping Nezuko. Can they stop Muzan before he can eliminate the Demon Corps?

Yu Yu Hakusho

Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen maybe new demon slayer series, but Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic. A shonen fighting manga by Yoshihiro Togashi. Yu Yu Hakusho tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a cynical, smart mouthed junior high school student. One day Yusuke dies after saving a little boy from being hit by a car. This heroic act is rewarded with an opportunity to return from the dead. Koenma, the son of the King of the Dead, makes him the Spirit Detective. Yusuke hunts demons that threaten Earth. He’s sent to train with Genkai, the crotchety old master spirit user.

Yusuke, his best friend Kazuma Kuwabara, demon fox vessel Kurama, and anti-hero Hiei. Yu Yu Hakusho set the bar for anime animation, and fight choreography. I rewatch the Dark Tournament arc occasionally and still believe that it’s one of the greatest anime arc ever.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 21: Recap and Review

Completion (Kansui)

After the epic action from the last few episodes, we should expect Jujutsu Kaisen to take a break from the intensity. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 21 concludes the Kyoto Goodwill Evert. Haruta Shigemo regrets his failure. He notes Hanami was “working too hard.” The special grade curse spirit collapses with a massive hole in its body. Hanami doesn’t seem like it can heal the wounds from Gojo’s attack. Shigemo attempts to “kill” Hanami but is stopped by Mahito. They discussed what they achieved. Mahito could “steal two sets of special grade cursed objects that were sealed away,” Sukuna’s fingers and the Death Painting Wombs No. 1-3. I love this series, but Jujutsu High keeping all six of Sukuna’s fingers in one place is ridiculous. Sure, placing Mahito’s cursed energy on one finger made it easier, but still.

Go, Baseball

What was interesting was Suguru deducting that Sukuna cared about one student (Megumi)? He doesn’t know which student but suggests to Hanami that killing students could undermine the mission with Sukuna. Regardless, their mission to seal Gojo is still on for October 31st. In the present, Ijichi lists the casualties and confirms what they took. We’re introduced to a character Tengen who doesn’t seem to matter other than his barriers. According to Suguru, Tengen doesn’t interact with the outside world and compares him to a “tree.” It’s an odd choice for the Jujutsu Kaisen series to make. I wonder why Gege made him so neutral. Maybe he won’t remain so obscure.

Anyway, Baseball. Gojo manipulates the Goodwill event, so the students play a game of baseball instead of one-on-one battles. Understandably, Jujutsu Kaisen would not have more battles, there can be overkill with fighting. I didn’t find the baseball all that interesting but was dismayed that everyone hates Todo. He’s irritating but has become one of my favorite characters. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for him when Maki beamed him in the face with a baseball. Meanwhile, Yaga and Gakuganji discuss how to deal with Yuji. Gakuganji admits he doesn’t hate Yuji, but his existence is against the rules. They’re not sure how Yuji and Sukuna will turn out, but Yaga expects that the sorcerers will experience regret. The Goodwill Event ends with Tokyo High as the victors.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 19: Recap and Review

Episode 19 – ‘Black Flash (Kokusen)’

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 19, Black Flash, opens with Megumi, Toge, and Noritoshi fleeing from Hanami. Toge uses his cursed speech to stop Hanami in its tracks. Noritoshi then uses his Blood Manipulation: Convergence – Piercing Blood. It does mild damage, but Hanami heals. The most vulnerable place on Hanami’s body seems to be its branches that grow from its eye sockets. Noritoshi intents to repeat the game plan over and over. Toge stops Hanami, Megumi and Noritoshi attack. They hope to reach the outside of the curtain. Their plan fails. Toge stalls as his throat bleeds. The difference in strength between Hanami and Toge causes strain on his throat. Megumi prepares to use his secret attack. However, Toge stops him. He uses the last of his strength to say, “blast away,” sending Hanami flying into the roof.

Jujutsu Kaisen has tried hiding Megumi’s secret technique several times in the series. Obviously they saving it for the best moment, but the constant interrupting is feeling silly. It’s fine to avoid using all the techniques too early in the series, but telling the audience that Megumi has the powerful ability but won’t use it is odd. Especially considering that they needed help against Hanami. Maki appears. She attacks Hanami with Kasumi’s katana, but it snaps against the curses skin. Megumi pulls out a three-section staff, special grade cursed tool: Playful Cloud, for Maki. She doesn’t do any damage but sends Hanami flying through the forest. Meanwhile, Megumi attacks with Divine Dog Totality, cutting into the arm of Hanami. It doesn’t matter though. Hanami regenerates.

The Black Flash

Megumi and Maki tag team Hanami, using cursed tools against the cursed spirit. Unfortunately, Megumi is attacked with a cursed bud sprout. It feeds off of cursed energy. Despite this, Megumi prepares to use cursed techniques anyway, even if he dies. Maki stops him. Aoi Todo and Yuji crash down. Todo continues his role as mentor towards Yuji. He says that he won’t “help until Yuji unleashes the Black Flash.” Yuji fails at first but Todo tells him “not to rely too heavily on anger.” Jujutsu Kaisen’s power system is complicated. It’s based on negative human emotion, but too much negativity apparently can backfire. The Black Flash is an example of its difficulty. The Black Flash is a “distortion in space” that occurs when a sorcerer applies “their cursed energy within one millionth of a second.”

It can’t be done deliberately, even Gojo can’t do it when he wants. Aoi praises Yuji for his “growth.” The friendship between Todo and Yuji at first was shallow. It’s becoming a deeper relationship. With Aoi now fights with Yuji against Hanami. Sensing that the fight will become more difficult, Hanami reveals its left arm. It’s black with a red rose at the shoulder. Hanami unleashes giant roots, forcing Yuji and Aoi to dodge. The scene is the highlight of the episode. Before the two sorcerers can get the advantage, Hanami releases the roots. Todo and Yuji fall. Hanami attacks, but Aoi and Yuji dodge midair by pushing off each other. The act symbolises the closeness that Yuji and Aoi’s relationship has reached. As Hanami admits that it’s “enjoying the fight” Todo prepares to use his cursed technique.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 18: Recap and Review

Hanami aims to fight for mother Earth by killing humanity in episode 18 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Hanami aims to fight for mother Earth by killing humanity

Episode 18 – “Sage”

After the last episode, Jujutsu Kaisen episode 18 had a lot to live up to. I didn’t. It not a problem, however. Megumi runs through the temple, evading arrows embedded with cursed energy. He has no trouble avoiding them. Megumi breaks one arrow, resulting in blood splattering on the wall. Noritoshi Kamo uses the Blood Manipulation. An inherited technique in the Kamo family, the technique “grants Noritoshi the ability to control all aspects of his blood.” Jujutsu Kaisen has made a point of highlighting the “Three families.” These families hold prestige in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe. Megumi Fushiguro is a member of the Zenin family, but it’s not clear what his exact relationship is to Maki and Mai. Like Kamo, he’s inherited a valued technique from the Zenin family, the Ten Shadow Technique. This ability allows him to summon ten different shikigami using shadows.

Noritoshi Kamo uses his Flowing Red Scale technique. He can increase his “body temperature, pulse rate, and the number of red blood cells to give themselves increased energy and physical abilities.” His speed and strength increases. He’s able to dominate Megumi but doesn’t do too much direct damage. Elsewhere, Toge unlocks Mechamaru’s phone and uses it to call Kasumi and tell her to “sleep.” Suddenly, he notices a dark presence. In the observing room, Principal Gakuganji remembers assigning a cursed spirit intended to kill Yuji. That curse spirit is killed by Hanami. Mahito and the other curses have interrupted the Goodwill Event.

The Goodwill Event is invaded

Back at the fight between Noritoshi and Megumi, Noritoshi remembers his childhood. His mother was his fathers, making him an illegitimate heir. The Kamo family valued Noritoshi’s blood manipulation, so they made him legitimate. He tries to relate to Megumi. Noritoshi rejects this familiarity. Unlike Noritoshi, he doesn’t seem to want anything to do with the three clans. Using a toad to distract Noritoshi, Megumi uses his latest shikigami, Max Elephant. The elephant fills the corridor with water, forcing Noritoshi outside. With Noritoshi vulnerable, Megumi uses Nue to electrocute him. Remembering his mother, Noritoshi is determined to win. He uses Crimson Binding on Nue. Preparing to fight, a mass of branches approach them. Toge is being chased by them and he orders Megumi and Noritoshi to run.”

The wall of talismans burn red, symbolising the end of Goodwill event. Realizing that “unregistered curses” has invaded, Yaga leaves Gojo and Gakuganji to protect the students. A special “curtain” is created that keeps Gojo out. This leaves Gakuganji and Utahime to face Juzo. The old man takes out a guitar and dares Juzo to try him. I gotta say, Gakuganji using a guitar comes out of nowhere. Obviously, we don’t know what his technique is, but he seemed too serious to have a potentially fun set of abilities. Historically, the old man in anime is a badass. I don’t expect Gakuganji to be any different. The students encounter Hanami. Toge uses his cursed speech to paralyze Hanami, who communicates with the students telepathically. Hanami claims to only want “to protect the planet and asks the sorcerers to die and become sages.”

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17: Recap and Review

Maki declares her intent to return to lead the Zenin Clan in episode 17 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Maki declares her intent to return to lead the Zenin Clan

Episode 17 – “Kyoto Sister School Goodwill Event – Team Battle, Part 3”

Jujutsu Kaisen continues to get better. Episode 17 is by far the best. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 17 balances the complex and emotional relationship between Mai and Maki while giving us wall to wall action with the highest animation quality. The episode opens with Kasumi recalling how Mai belittled the abilities of her sister. She claims Maki “was weak and forever a grade 4 sorcerer.” This false impression backfires on Kasumi. Faced with the actual Maki, she knows Mai was wrong. Maki overpowers her, forcing Kasumi into a defensive position. She tries to use her Simple Domain ability. However, Maki counters the stance by snapping her spear in half and throwing the non-cursed half. She also throws a kunai, forcing Kasumi to move, deactivating the Simple Domain. Maki disarms Kasumi, taking her sword for herself.

Where introduced to a new character, Mei Mei. A pretty sorcerer with pale blue hair in a long braid covering one eye, Mei Mei can see through the eyes of crows. She remarks on the ability of Maki and tells Satoru to promote her. He agrees he should, but the Zenin Family interferes.

Image of Mei Mei. She is introduced for the first time in Jujutsu Kaisen episode 17.
Mei Mei is introduced

I’m Nobara Kugisaki

Elsewhere, Nobara is chasing Momo through the woods. Momo uses a cursed energy wind that keeps Nobara at a distance. Momo explains that “female sorcerers have it harder.” She specifically acknowledges that Mai is under tremendous pressure from the Zenin Family. She explains that she’s considered a “failure” by her family’s standards. Nobara doesn’t care. From her perspective, having a hard life isn’t an excuse for destructive behavior. She notes she hates Mai but loves Maki, both of whom had the same upbringing. Nobara rejects Momo’s sexist ideology, unwilling to limit herself to the gender standards of society.

Nobara attacks Momo with Straw Doll Technique: Hairpin which results in the nails exploding with cursed energy. These explosions cause the trees to fall, allowing Nobara to grab a bristle from Momo’s broom. Using her Straw Doll Technique: Resonance, Nobara dispels the control Momo has over her broom. She crashes to the ground. Nobara approaches Momo and strikes her with a squeaky hammer to avoid killing her. Before she can “finish” Momo, Mai shoots her in the temple with a cursed infused rubber bullet.

Maki dominates Kasumi in combat in episode 17 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Maki dominates Kasumi in combat

Why wouldn’t you stay at the bottom with me?

Like most characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, Mai is more complicated than first assumed. We believed Maki was unfortunate because she couldn’t see curses naturally. Jujutsu Kaisen asks us to consider how it might be a blessing. As a child, Mai was burdened with the ability to see cursed spirits. She was afraid of them. Maki’s inability to see them became a kind of privilege. Maki didn’t fear the cursed spirit, freeing her to pursue her dreams. Mai hated her for it. As Maki moved forward, she left her sister behind. This is at the core of Mai’s bitterness.

During her fight with her sister, she uses her technique, construction. In Jujutsu Kaisen, one can use their cursed energy to “create matter from nothing.” Mai uses this to create a bullet. The matter produced in this way doesn’t disappear after the technique ends. The technique seems to cost Mai as she bleeds from her nose. Regardless, Maki catches the bullet. Mai believes Maki was born with a “Heavenly Restriction” that gave her physical power for a lack of cursed energy. Mai attacks Maki with her revolver but is bested by her sister once again. She hates her sister’s ambition, forcing her to follow. Maki has a talent that Mai lacks, and their clan won’t even acknowledge it (Maki’s talent). Where does this place Mai?

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 16: Recap and Review

Jujutsu Kaisen episode 16 focuses on the battle between Panda and Mechamaru. Before that, we get to the climax of the fight between Aoi and Yuji. The episode ones with the quote from the “artistic community.” It is said that, “If someone doesn’t have an eye that can judge quality, they can create nothing of value with their hands.” It’s implied that this is true of Jujutsu and that Yuji has the “eye.” Yuji counter’s Aoi’s attacks. Yuji can see through the offense of Aoi and is “growing” as they fight. However, Aoi can still get the best of Yuji. Todo Aoi appears to be a violent and brainless, but he’s proving (at least when fighting) that he’s smart. He’s capable of analyzing the problem’s with Yuji’s Divergent Fist. Yuji leaves behind Cursed Energy because of his “superhuman speed.”

Yuji’s attack is good enough for low-level sorcerer but not a special grade. Like Todo, Yuji is a brawler. He also has intelligence (again when fighting). He quickly deduces that “he must apply Cursed Energy at the exact moment his attack hits.” Aoi teaches him to that “flowing Cursed Energy is something most Sorcerer’s do consciously.” It’s important for Yuji to stop trying to “speed up” his energy flow. Yuji beings to make his cursed energy flow throughout his entire body. Aoi and Yuji prepare to fight, as his new best friend Aoi hopes to lead Yuji to greatness.

Panda is not a Panda

As Nobara and Panda corner Momo, Mechamaru shoots Panda from behind. He feints dying. Meanwhile, Momo decides to “teach” Nobara a listen. When Mechamaru appears, Panda gets up and punches him. It’s revealed that Panda is a mutated Cursed Corpse. Mechamaru is a “puppet.” It’s being controlled by a man named Kokichi. He reveals he has a Heavenly Restriction, an ability that “grants him great levels of Cursed Energy in place of his useless body.” Kokichi is jealous of Panda’s freedom. He attacks with full-power Ultimate Cannon. Pandasurvives. He emerges from the smoke to reveal his Gorilla Mode.

In a flashback, Yaga informs Panda he had an “older brother and sister.” He was born with three cores, meaning that he needs to be hit in all three to be defeated. In his Gorilla Mode, Panda is a powerhouse. He strikes Mechamaru, sending him flying. Panda uses an unblockable “Drum Beat” ability. In close combat, Panda has the advantage. On the roof, Mechamaru distracts Panda by throwing a tile at him. He takes this opportunity to strike at Panda’s core with his elbow boosters. Panda faked the location of the core. He strikes Mechamaru with his palm, destroying the head of the puppet.

Aoi Todo has found his best friend

Episode 15: Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event – Group Battle 1

The team battle begins. Megumi uses his Divine Dogs to track curses. Panda deduces that the cursed spirit boss is probably “halfway between both schools,” but doesn’t think it will sit still. The Tokyo team splits into the Megumi squad and the Panda squad. Suddenly, Aoi Todo arrives. He intends on taking on the entire Tokyo Team. However, Yuji takes initiative, kneeing Todo in the face. The others split up afterward. In a flashback, Maki predicted Aoi would come “charging straight towards them.” Yuji task is to distract Todo, he doesn’t need to win. Todo comes at Yuji. He hits him with a powerful punch. Todo brutally stomps on Yuji’s head, drawing blood. When he goes for the finishing blow, he stops, assuming that Yuji died. As he walks away, Yuji gets up.

What if you made me even dumber?

It pisses Yuji off. Todo asks him his name, then the question, “What kind of woman is your type?” Perplexed, Yuji answers “a tall woman with a big ass.” Todo loves his answer, he fantasizes that he and Yuji are best friends. Todo cries after the memory. Aoi decides Yuji is his best friend. The other Kyoto students suddenly attack Yuji. Mai Zenin shoots at him, Kasumi Miwa uses New Shadow Style, Simple Domain: Quick Draw, but Yuji can dodge them. However, the students can surround him. Yuji realizes that they’re trying to kill him. Aoi claps his hands together, using a cursed technique to swap Yuji with Noritoshi Kamo. Having found his new best friend, Aoi isn’t pleased. He attacks Kamo but misses. The Kyoto leave Yuji in Todo’s hands, hoping he kills him.

He’s just Sukuna’s Vessel

Momo Nishimiya surveilling, the battle is attacked by Nue’s electric wings. Maki and Megumi ambush Kasumi and Noritoshi. Megumi asks Kamo directly if he’s trying to kill Yuji. In a flashback, the Tokyo Team assumes that the Kyoto Team is trying to murder Yuji. Panda explains they consider Yuji to be no different from a cursed spirit. They send Toge to hunt down the cursed spirits, while they stop the Kyoto Team. With Toge free to fight curses, the Tokyo Team has the advantage. Elsewhere, Yuji and Aoi continue to trade blows. Yuji impresses Todo with his toughness, strength, and speed. However, he hates the time lag in Yuji’s technique. He points out Yuji’s “nasty habit,” and that he will never lose to him as long as he does that. Accused of being okay with “staying weak,” Yuji charges his fist. Claiming that he’s not.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 14: Recap and Review

Episode 14, “Kyoto Sister School Goodwill Event”

Jujutsu Kaisen returns after a brief break. Episode 14, “Kyoto Sister School Goodwill Event – Team Battle, Part 0” begins the Kyoto Goodwill Event arc. Jojo, Geto, and Mahito discuss their plans after failing. Mahito realizes that Sukuna is “valuable,” and believes that they should focus on winning him over. Jojo is willing to everything possible, even if they die. Geto already sets a plan in motion. Elsewhere, Gojo and Yuji decided on a plan to reintroduce Yuji to his friends. At the Tokyo school, Nobara arrives with luggage. She falsely believes that they were going to the Kyoto school. Jujutsu Kaisen once again mentions Yuta Okkotsu. The buildup for this character makes me want to see his skills. So it’s working.

The Kyoto jujutsu students arrive and we get formal introductions. The student group comprises Ultimate Mechamaru, Nishimiya Momo, Kamo Noritoshi, Zenin Mai, and Toudou Aoi. All are second or third years, giving them the advantage over the Tokyo team. Gojo arrives late and makes a big deal about Yuji’s return. Megumi and Nobara aren’t moved. The Kyoto students don’t care, but it pisses Principal Gakuganji Yoshinobu off. Gojo loves antagonising him. If my knowledge with anime is any sign, old people are usually badasses. Gojo may be stronger than him, but I still wouldn’t mess with him. Anyway, Yuji reunites with his friends.

Principal Masamichi Yaga explains the rules of the team battle: “The first team to exorcise the grade 2 curse lurking around the battlefield wins. Its also populated with many grade 3 and lower curses. If the grade 2 isn’t exorcised by sunset, the team with the most exorcisms win.” The students must reframe from killing or severally wounding each other. However, during the Kyoto team meeting, principal Gakuganji orders them to kill Yuji. He considers Yuji to be Sukuna’s vessel and nothing more. The Kyoto team plans on ganging up on him. Jujutsu Kaisen is making the case for Kyoto, being the source of mole. We have learned little about Geto’s past, but I think he was a student at Kyoto.

What is Megumi capable of

A common theme of this episode was: the hyping of characters whose abilities haven’t been seen. This was the case for Gojo and now Megumi, Okkotsu, and Toge. At this point in the series, I feel like we know little about most of the characters’ abilities. This isn’t a criticism, but more of an observation. Regardless, we get some information on Toge’s abilities. He uses cursed speech. This ability allows him to “infuse his words with Cursed Energy to improve the spirit of his commands, forcing all those who hear it to obey.”

This ability has downsides. If he uses it against a target with more cursed energy, it will take a toll on his body. While we have seen some of Megumi’s abilities, Sukuna has pointed out that he has a special ability. Kamo Noritoshi warns against Zenin underestimating him, pointing out that Megumi is “the most talented in the Zenin Family.” Hopefully, Jujutsu Kaisen will stop teasing us in the next episode.
