Anime Theories (Jujutsu Kaisen): Is Kenjaku Yuji’s mother?

Many fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have notice the mystery surrounding Yuji Itadori’s parentage. Yuji was raised by his grandfather, Wasuke Itadori, who dies leaving Yuji without any parents or guardians. Early in the series we also learn that Yuji never meet his mother and can “barely remember” his father. With Yuji having no knowledge of his parents and his grandfather’s death, his parents origins and deaths are hidden from the audience. Throughout the series Gege Akutami introduces hints of Yuji’s parentage, specifically Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 143, chapter 160, Choso’s claim that Yuji is his “brother,” and Kenjaku’s abilities and motives.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 143: Did Kenjaku take over Yuji’s mother?

Chapter 143 was the moment fans learned that Kenjaku used his innate Technique: which allows him to “swap bodies” with another by implanting his brain, into take over Yuji’s father’s new partner. Jin Itadori is told by Wasuke to “give up on that woman,” or he’ll died. Frustrated he yells that he knew Jin “wanted a child” with Kaori. Does this mean she’s not Yuji’s mother? Or that Yuji’s father was so desperate he had a child with the reanimated corpse of his wife? I would speculate that Kenjaku wanted to create a vessel strong enough to host Sukuna. If Kaori died prior to having a child like Wasuke suggested then it makes sense that Kenjaku took control over her corpse at some point.

In chapter 208, page 18 Kenjaku tells Tengen that the technique “antigravity system” was “engraved” in Kaori. Knowing that Kenjaku is a long term planner he probably targeted Kaori for her ability then had Yuji. When Kaori appears in chapter 143 there one striking thing, she has the stitching associated with Kenjaku’s Innate Technique. In chapter 160 Kenjaku introduces himself to Sasaki. It’s a brief moment where Kenjaku saves her from the culling game. On page 8, Kenjaku thanks Sasaki for “getting along with his son.” If that’s not confirmation I don’t know what is. Of course, Kenjaku has a weird personality so he may not meant it literally but why say it at all?

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 24: Recap and Review

Choso’s dreams

Choso is one of the nine Cursed Womb: Death Paintings: half-human, half-cursed spirit. According to Choso, Noritoshi Kamo is responsible for his and his brothers existence, therefore he’s their “third” parent. Kamo apparently mixed his blood in with his already pregnant mother. In chapter 106, page 4, Choso receives a memory just before he prepares to kill Yuji. It depicts Choso at the head of a table, with Yuji, Eso, Kechizu, and the capsules containing the other Death Paintings having lunch. Yuji even calls him “Big Bro” on page 6. Choso panics and flees. Confused by it’s meaning.

In chapter 134, Choso exposes Kenjaku as Noritoshi Kamo. Kenjaku confirms that he’s had many names and Noritoshi Kamo was one of them. In the next chapter, Choso claims that he can “sense” his brothers through their “blood connection.” He concludes that Yuji must be his brother because he can “sense” him. Choso’s explanation is too simple. However, this suggests that when Kenjaku takes over a body some of his DNA must be present.

If this is true then Kenjaku would be the “father” of the Death Paintings and Yuji, not Kamo and Kaori. Or his DNA mixes with the new host. Which means Kenjaku could be the “father” if he controlled Kamo and then Kaori with his intention being creating half-curse, half-human children. But why? In chapter 203, Kenjaku claims that Yuji’s primary purpose is to be a “vessel” for Sukuna, and as long as they’re alive “the chain of curses will never end.” He also thought half-cursed spirit and half-human would be an evolution he wished for.

Kenjaku’s big plan

Kenjaku wishes to “optimize,” cursed energy, hoping to evolve humanity in such a way that a new “golden age,” of jujutsu sorcery can begin. In chapter 145, Tengen explains Kenjaku’s goals more specifically. Kenjaku wants to turn everyone in Japan into sorcerers but lacks the cursed energy to do so. Instead Kenjaku will merge humankind with Tengen, who has become “the world itself.” According to Tengen, “a human who merges with him transforms into something greater than a sorcerer . . . a new being that is both there and not there.” Tengen can only maintain his self control and form through the use of barrier techniques.

Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0: Introducing the second strongest sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu

Without such barriers there will be no boundaries between individuals causing evil to spread. Furthermore, Tengen’s evolution has caused him to become more like a cursed spirit than human so he can be controlled by Kenjaku’s cursed spirit manipulation. Tengen claims that he, “the star plasma vessel,” and “the six eyes,” are connected by fate. Kenjaku has twice been defeated by sorcerers with the six eyes. To avoid this fate in the future he killed the next six eye user, however, another six eye user will always be born. So Kenjaku focused on sealing instead of killing the six eyes, hence sealing Gojo in the Prison Realm.

Along with Toji Zenin and Geto Suguru (for his cursed manipulation) Kenjaku’s plan falls into place. Tengen claims that the culling game is “like breaking in the body prior to merging.” If they merge without a star plasma vessel then the merging would be incomplete. The culling game acts as ritual so Kenjaku can begin the merging. During the culling game Kenjaku takes over the Kamo family as it’s 25th head and convinces the American President to abduct Japanese sorcerers for research as an “energy source.”

When Kenjaku enters the Tomb of the Star Corridor, he tells Choso that “the culling game has already served its purpose.” He tells Choso that a “new form of cursed energy may be attained by raising cursed spirits to the next level.” This was the reason he sought to create half-human, half-cursed spirits like the Death Womb’s hoping they would be an evolution of curse spirits. By merging 100 million people with Tengen a massive number of cursed spirits will be created. If Kenjaku can control cursed spirits then he would have control over all of the new spirits. Regardless, he tells Choso in chapter 202 that he’s doing all of this because “it just sounds fun.” Every aspect of Kenjaku’s plan hasn’t been revealed but it’s more complicated than first introduced.

Conclusion

I believe Kenjaku was Yuji’s mother after she die but before he was born. He wanted to create a vessel for Sukuna and gain her cursed technique. As I mentioned, Kenjaku claims that both Yuji and Sukuna are needed to produce more cursed spirits and that’s a useful part of his larger plan. That said there’s definitely more to this story and Kenjaku’s plan. What do you think of Yuji’s parentage? Is my theory corrected? Any other theories?

The Top 10 Best Anime and Manga Power Systems (Part 2)

5. My Hero Academia – Quirk

In My Hero Academia, Quirks are “special, superhuman ability an individual can possess. Quirks are generally unique to their user, and are classified in multiple categories. The user is also given one single ability of that said Quirk, rather than many abilities.” Quirks are genetically inherited through “Mendelian inheritance.” They will manifest in children around age 4. Each child will either manifest the same Quirk of their parent or a composite one if both parents have Quirks. It is possible, however, for some children to develop Quirks that aren’t related to their genetic line.

In very rare case animals can possess Quirks, like Nezu. It is also possible that a Quirk can “mutate and merge.” Sometimes people with Quirks that are too difficult for their bodies to handle, for example Yuga Aoyama. His Quirks not only requires that he have a special belt, if he uses it for to long he will get pain in his stomach. Quirks feature more complex aspects to there existence. The concept of the “Quirk Factor” is one of these more complex aspects. The “Quirk Factor” refers to “the collective traits that compose a Quirk. This includes the primary Quirk power as well as all the biological mechanisms that allow said primary power to function properly.”

Quirks can also under go what is called “Awakening.” When this occurs, a users Quirk goes through “evolution.” It’s not clear what exactly triggers this moment, but Himiko Toga’s Quirk transforms during a “life or death situation.” Quirks are categorized in several different “types.”

  • Emitter – Quirks have the ability to either release certain substances, or alter materials around them in certain ways. Emitter-type Quirks usually require a conscious effort to activate
  • Transformation – Quirks cause the user to take on a temporary alteration of some kind. Transformation-type Quirks allow the user to temporarily “transform” their body in a variety of manners, sometimes enhancing existing features or perhaps adding new features to the body altogether.
  • Mutant – Quirks can have a wide variety of features and abilities depending on the individual. Generally, Mutant-type Quirks are associated with the user’s physicality (mutations). As a result, Mutant Quirks are passively active and, at a glance, are the most identifiable.

4. Jujutsu Kaisen – Cursed Techniques/Innate Techniques

Jujutsu Kaisen has a power scaling system that ranks jujutsu sorcererscursed spiritscursed objects, and cursed tools. The ranks range from grades one through four and special grades. It can be confusing at first, as most of us associate larger numbers with higher values. Generally, sorcerers are graded from Grade 4 to Grade 1. The scale for cursed spirits isn’t exact, Grade 2 sorcerers are slightly stronger than Grade 2 curses as their abilities put them closer to Grade 1 curses.

Ranks

If traditional weapons were used against curses and sorcerers measured their effectiveness as a gauge:

  • Grade 4: “A wooden bat is enough.”
  • Grade 3: “If you have a handgun, you can rest easy.”
  • Semi-Grade 2 :
  • Grade 2: “Close calls with a shotgun.”
  • Semi-Grade 1 :
  • Grade 1: “Even a tank might be insufficient.”
  • Special Grade 1 :
  • Special Grade: “Cluster bombs might work”.

Coming up with a unique power system has to be difficult. At this point what hasn’t been done. It’s not always necessary to invent new techniques, like fire, but you can invent how those abilities manifest. The series power system focuses on limitations. Binding Vows, Heavenly Restriction, and Domain Expansions are some limits placed on techniques. By deliberately placing limitations on one’s self, a jujutsu sorcerer can increase their power. For example, Nanami limits his power during work hours. This puts him at disadvantage for hours, when Nanami has to work “overtime” his cursed energy increases.

3. Hunter X Hunter – Nen

Nen allows the user to manipulate their own life energy, called aura. These users are referred to as “Nen users.” Aura are produced by all living bodies. Aura flow’s throughout the bodies that escapes through the top of the head. The points in the bodies where aura flows are called “Aura Nodes.” In order to learn Nen, students have to master opening and closing their Aura nodes. There are two ways to learn how to do this, meditation or Initiation.

Nen of the Flame

A precursor to learning Nen, these are mental exercises that “strengthen one’s force of will. Regular practice can smooth the flow of one’s aura.” There are four exercises:

  • Ten (“Point”): Focus the mind, reflect upon the self and determine the goal.
  • Zetsu (“Tongue”): Put it into words.
  • Ren (“Temper”): Intensify your will.
  • Hatsu (“Release”): Put it to action.

These four principles must be mastered to fully understand Nen. Then one can learn the more advanced techniques. These techniques often combine with or derive from one of the four major principles. The advanced techniques are as follows:

  • Gyo (“Focus”) – is an advanced application of Ren by which a Nen user concentrates a larger than normal portion of their aura into one specific body part. It increases the strength of that one body part, but leaves the rest of the body more vulnerable. Gyo is most often used in the eyes, allowing a Nen user to see aura and Nen constructs concealed with In.
  • In (“Conceal”) – is an advanced form of Zetsu used to render one’s aura imperceptible, effectively concealing it. Unlike Zetsu, however, In does not stop the user’s aura flow; instead, it hides it, making it impossible to perceive with any of the five senses or extrasensory perception. Hence, this technique is perfect for launching sneak attacks or laying traps, as it can conceal not only the user’s presence, but also Nen constructs generated with Transmutation, or Conjuration.
  • En (“Circle”) – is an advanced application of Ten and Ren. In Ren, aura usually envelops only a small amount of space around the user’s body. En is when one extends their Ren so that their aura extends further than normal, then uses Ten at the same time to contain and give shape to that aura, normally a sphere.
  • Shu (“Enfold”) – is an advanced application of Ten. Shu allows a user of Nen to enshroud an object with their aura, allowing them to use that object as an extension of their own body.
  • Ko (“Temper”) – is a combination of TenZetsuHatsu, Ren, and Gyo in which all of the user’s aura is concentrated into one particular body part. Gyo is utilized to focus aura on a part of the body, while Ten is used to prevent it from dispersing. Zetsu is used to completely stop the flow of Nen in all other parts of the body, increasing the output in the desired area. With Ren, the amount of aura is increased even further. This makes that one body part extremely powerful, but at the cost of leaving the rest of the user’s body completely unprotected. Due to the risk it carries, Ko is regarded as a purely offensive technique.
  • Ken (“Fortify”) – is the advanced version of the basic Ren and Ten techniques. It is a primarily defensive technique where a Nen user maintains a state of Ren for a prolonged amount of time. The amount of aura surrounding the user’s body during Ken is about 10 times higher than during TenKen allows a Nen user to guard against attacks from any direction, but the large amount of aura produced makes it tiring to maintain. It is considered the best option to defend from Ko, despite not being as powerful as the latter on any given part of the body, as it protects all of it evenly.
  • Ryu (“Flow”) – is the term for use of Gyo from a state of Ken to perform real-time offensive and defensive value adjustments. If Ko devolves 100% of one’s aura to offense or, much more rarely, to defense, and Ken splits it evenly between the two, Ryu is redistributing one’s aura according to any other percentage, for example by focusing 70% of one’s aura in one fist as one is about to strike, or 80% in one’s leg to block an incoming kick. It is utilized to damage a Ken user without leaving oneself as unprotected as during Ko, although the power of the technique is lower. Ryu is difficult to master, as it requires not only to control one’s aura flow with great precision, but also to be able to estimate the amount of aura utilized by the opponent at a glance.

In the diagram below is the six different types of aura. Everyone is born with one of the six, they are tasked with learning a new unique technique. There are “numerical approximations” that determine how efficient one would be at using aura abilities. One has a chance to be 100% efficient in their own aura type. One can be 80 % efficient in the adjacent aura type, 40% efficient at the opposite or farthest category, and 60% efficient in the two remaining categories.

Nen gets even more complex, as there are several sub-nen types, limitations, conditions, activation requirements, and aura power levels.

2. Naruto – Chakra

In the Naruto series, Chakra is the means to using any technique. Generally the use of hand seals are required to create jutsus. These techniques allow users to enact effects such as walking on water, breathing fire or creating illusions. Chakra is restricted by the Eight Gatestenketsu that are located along the chakra pathway system. Chakra became a form of life energy that all people can produce. If a person runs out of chakra, they will die. Chakra is created when two forms of energy, physical and spiritual are mixed together. The amount of chakra an individual possess is generally determined by genes, however, they can train to increase their limits, some what.

Chakra Control

Mastering Chakra Control requires a great deal of training. It’s not important to have massive amounts of chakra, but to be able “control and conserve it.” In order to have good chakra control ” a ninja should only mold as much chakra as they need to perform a given ability. If they mold more chakra than is needed, the excess chakra is wasted and they will tire out faster from its loss. If they don’t mold enough chakra, a technique will not be performed effectively, if at all, likely creating problems in a combat situation.” When a ninja wants to create ninjutsu, they need to use one of two methods of manipulating chakra, shape transformation and nature transformation.

  • Shape transformation deals with controlling the form, movement, and potency of chakra.
  • Nature transformation deals with changing the physical properties of chakra into an element. There is also the nature transformation of Yin and Yang, which deals with changing the ratio of spiritual and physical energies within chakra.

Jutsu

Are the “mystical arts a ninja will utilize in battle.” Ninja’s need to form seals to manifest the technique. There are three different types of jutsu:

  • Ninjutsu – is the most nebulous of the three, and may most simply be described as anything that is not genjutsu or taijutsu. Most ninjutsu require chakra and hand seals, but this is not always the case since the mere usage of weaponry qualifies as ninjutsu.
  • Genjutsu – is one of the main jutsu categories which uses chakra. Unlike ninjutsu, the effects of genjutsu are not real, being only sensory illusions experienced by those who fall victim to it.
  • Taijutsu – is a basic form of techniques and refers to any techniques involving the martial arts or the optimization of natural human abilities. Taijutsu is executed by directly accessing the user’s physical and mental energies, relying on the stamina and strength gained through training. It typically does not require chakra, though chakra may be used to enhance its techniques. Taijutsu generally requires no hand seals to perform, occasionally making use of certain stances or poses, and are far quicker to use than ninjutsu or genjutsu. Taijutsu is hand-to-hand combat.

There are several sub-categories of as well. Medical NinjutsuKinjutsuKenjutsuSenjutsu and Space-time Ninjutsu. Naruto’s powers systems include summons, ninja tools like swords, puppets and ninja dogs.

Smoker using his Devil Fruit ability

1. One Piece – Devil Fruits

Devil Fruits are mysterious fruits that are found throughout the One Piece world. Once consumed the fruit provides the eater with an ability. With the exception of Black Beard, an individual can only have one devil fruit ability. Devil fruits are divide into three different categories:

  • Paramecia – These fruits give the users a power that can affect their body, manipulate the environment, and/or produce substances. This Devil Fruit type can be categorized into two basic groups: those which are based on a characteristic (such as elasticity or slowness) or an object (bombs, doors, etc.).
  • Logia – this type allows the user to completely alter their form into a natural element and manipulate it at will.
  • Zoan – This type of fruit allows the user to transform into another species and inter-species hybrid forms at will. Zoan types are especially effective in close combat.

Haki

Every living person in the world has a mysterious power called Haki. However, most people do realize they have it. There are three different types of Haki:

  • Kenbunshoku Haki – is a form of Haki that allows the user to sense the presence of others, even if they are concealed from view or too far to see normally.
  • Busoshoku Haki – is a form of Haki that allows the user to use their spirit to create, in essence, an invisible armor around themselves, providing potentially incredible offensive and defensive capabilities. Notably, this form of Haki can be used to injure Devil Fruit users that are otherwise immune to certain kinds of physical harm, mainly Logia users.
  • Haoshoku Haki – is a rare form of Haki that cannot be attained through training. Only one in several million people have this ability. This type of Haki allows the user to exert their willpower over others.

Martial Artists

In One Piece every crew has a combatant, martial arts are a very important part of the series. While not the main form of power, martial arts are used by many characters in the series. Characters like Sabo use martial arts style and stick-fighting. Jinbe uses Fish-Man Karate and Fish-Man Jujutsu. Throughout the series several different form of martial arts are presented. They are generally characterized by styles (Black Leg Style), species (Fish-Man Karate) and culture (Okama Kenpo).

Swordsmen

Nearly every crew has a swordsmen. They are considered to be important assets to the crew and are often highly ranked in their crew. There are two different kinds of swordsmen, the Strong Blade and the Gentle Blade. Strong Blade swordsmen focus on strength like Zoro, Ryuma and Kawamatsu. However, the Gentle Blade swordsmen like Tashigi, Kaku and Brook emphasize speed. The greatest swordsmen alive, Mihawk, uses swordsmanship that combines Strong and Gentle Blade styles. Swords are categorized in One Piece by “Grade.” There are 12 Supreme Grade Swords, 21 Great Grade Swords, 50 Skillful Grade Swords and a undetermined number of Grade Swords.

Three Great Powers

The military takes a very important role in the One Piece series. The Three Great Powers consists of the Marines, the Shichibukai (now disbanded) and the Yonko. The military hopes to replace the Shichibukai with the SSG. The three powers balance each other out, with SSG and the Military equaling Yonko.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 190 Review: Maki Zenin invades the Culling Game

The fight between Hajime Kashimo and Kinji Hakari ends with both fighters exhausted and alive. At the end of the last chapter Kashimo used his cursed energy to create an explosion of steam. In order to survive, Hakari makes a “binding vow” sacrificing his left arm. By making this vow he shifted his curse energy to protect the rest of his body. I’ve enjoyed this epic fight but Hakari’s is a broken character and this fight had a number of ass pulls including how he survived the explosion. However, it appears that he might have lost his ability to use his curse technique without his arm.

Out of cursed energy, Hajime Kashimo accepts death, telling Hakari to “kill him.” Hakari refuses because he needs Hajime’s points. He also doesn’t consider himself the winner because Hajime “never used his cursed technique.” Hajime claims that he “can only use his cursed technique once,” and he wants to use it on Sukuna. To this end, he strikes a bargain with Hakari. Another rule is added: Rule 10 – players may transfer a number of points of their choosing to another player. Hakari returns to talk to Charles Bernard and asks to read his manga series. I turns out that he’s a “noob” and hasn’t even published anything yet. Irritated, Hakari begins kicking Charles and tells him to “start drawing.”

Suddenly, Nishimiya arrives. Her arrival acts as a recap, reminding us what the plan is. By adding four new rules, making point transference possible (preventing death), allowing 100 points to be used to “create a substitute” so individuals can escape the culling game, the removal of communication blocks between colonies, and permitting players to leave barriers. With all the fighting I’ve completely lost track of the main narrative, so I found the recap helpful. Anyway, Nishimiya says that they should “postpone,” establishing the third rule.

Maki can pass through barriers now and with the aid of Ui Ui they wouldn’t need the rule anyway. Maki is shown bursting through several cursed spirits while entering the Sakurajima Colony. She’s greeted by Noritoshi Kamo. He’s got a new look and according to him has “fallen from grace,” due to a new head of the Kamo Family, making him (a bastard) unnecessary. So far Jujutsu Kaisen hasn’t explored the Kamo family much save, Noritoshi and Choso, so I’m interested in how that family’s dynamic functions. I’m excited to see Maki fight more, but I expect to get some updates on Yuji, Megumi, and Yuta first.

Weekly Shonen – One Piece Chapter 1042, JJK Chapter 177, and MHA Chapter 346

One Piece Chapter 1042

The Victor Needs no Epithet

Chapter 1042 of One Piece begins with X Drake stabbing the CP0 agent. The agent is surprise Drake’s interfering who responds that “he follows his own justice.” The agent uses Shigan to break free and puncture a hole in Drake’s throat. On the rooftop of Onigashima, Luffy and Kiado continue to fight. Kaido is having difficulty tracking Luffy’s punches as his punches alter there trajectory. On top of that Luffy’s attacks hurt.

Kaido, still drunk, transforms several times to try to avoid more damage. He enters his full dragon form and even “eats” Luffy. Kaido takes Luffy into the air, opens his mouth, and fires a Bolo Breath at Luffy. Strawhat avoids the attack and prepares to use the last of his Gear Fourth. He lands a devastating blow against Kaido with his Gomu Gomu no: Over Kong Gun. Luffy rushes to get another strike against Kaido before he runs out of strength but Kaido recovers first and hits him with another Thunder Bagua. Suddenly, the Cipher Pol Aigis Zero (CP0) from before interferes in the fight. Previously the agent was told that Gorousei gave them the order to “eliminate Straw Hat Luffy to prevent him from defeating Kaido.” Using Iron Body he distract Luffy, leaving him open to being hit by Kiado.

Yuta prepares to call Rita.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 177

Sendai Colony, Part 4

Ryu Ishigori and Yuta Okkotsu begin their fight, with Ryu displaying his mastery of curse energy. Ryu claims that he’s been left “unsatisfied” and he hopes Yuta can solve this problem. Yuta and Ryu’s fight is explosive. The sorcerers clash with a barrage of punches. Yuta is repelled by Ryu’s attack sending him flying through the air and through the top of a nearby roof. Ryu then attacks with Granite Blast which Yuta deflects barehanded. With Ryu caught off guard, Yuta manages to strike him with a punch. However, Ryu deflects this with ease.

Vulnerable in the air once again, Yuta is attacked from behind by Takako Uro. She explains that she doesn’t “hit the person, but the surface of the sky.” She can hit her opponent when she “breaks” that surface. Uro uses Thin Ice Breaker, once again sending Yuta flying into a building. Pissed she’s interfering in his fight, Ryu attacks her with Granite Blast but Uro rotates the sky around her and reflects the blast at Ryu. Yuta returns. Ryu deduces that he’s used Reverse cursed Technique “each time he, Uro, and Kurourushi use their big moves,” causing him to be “bottoming out.” With little option Yuta calls Rika.

My Hero Academia Chapter 346

Super Hyper Unfair Broken Stage

Dynamight, Suneater, Nejire Chan, Edgeshot, Best Jeanist, and Mirko prepare to battle Tomura Shigaraki on the newly constructed floating U.A. fortress. The original intent was to have Deku there as well, but without him they’ll have to make due. Shigaraki realizes that he’s the only villain in the floating sky. He tries to use his Decay quirk to attack the heroes but he’s blasted into the air and knocked into an electromagnetic barrier. Best Jeanist grabs “carbon fibers” and returns Tomura back to the battlefield. Jeanist explains that “no matter how superhuman he may be, a strong enough current will cause his body to stiffen up momentarily, giving them just enough time to react.”

The heroes don’t have the power that Shigaraki possess so they need to be smarter. The fortress is designed to be Tomura’s “coffin in the sky,” with the Development Class repairing the battlefield as Tomura destroys it, Creati making new parts, and the combination of Phantom Thief, Eraser Head, and Manual “erasing” Tomura’s Quirks, U. A. has created a detailed counter to Tomura’s many abilities. However, Tomura’s left hand begins to transform into a bunch of fingers. With his body nearly complete Tomura might still be too much to deal with.

Neito Monoma (Phantom Thief) is really having a moment. He’s the most irritating character but his Quirk is useful. The heroes wouldn’t have much of a change without him. However, it also makes him a target and I don’t think it will end well for him. With this being the final arc of the series I’m expecting a number of deaths, Neito might be sacrificed. I hope they let other characters shine instead of leaving everything to Bakugo, Deku, and Todoroki. It already appears like the top ranked heroes, Endeavor, Mirio, and Best Jeanist are going to have important roles in this battle. U. A. has step up a powerful team against Tomura, so far this arc is starting off well.

Weekly Shonen – Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 175

Sendai Colony, Part 2

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 175 concludes the battle between Yuta Okkotsu and special grade cockroach: Kurourushi with an unusual ending. Yuta cuts the arm off of the special grade, then pins it to a rock with his sword. Yuta overwhelms Kurourushi at first forcing the curse to be on the defensive. Yuta is able to deduce that he’s being watched by Ryu Ishigori and Takako Uro. He realizes that they’re likely players with “high scores,” but he doesn’t want to reveal that he can use the “reverse cursed technique.” Kurourushi asks him why he’s “interfering.” Yuta responds by questioning “why he’s eating people,” to which the curse says it’s because he likes “the taste of iron.” Kurourushi then uses Blinding Earthen Insect Trance which surrounds Yuta with a tornado of insects.

Yuta exterminates the insects, but when he and the curse clash he’s hit by a projectile from the sword. Suddenly, two cockroaches emerge from Yuta’s shoulder. As he kills the insects, the special grade hits Yuta directly in the chest with his sword. Yuta is damage greatly and coughs up blood. Ryu and Takako assume that it’s “over.” With no choice remaining, Yuta uses reverse cursed technique and converts it into “output,” delivered via his mouth. As Ryu notes, it’s a gross way to kill Kurourushi but it was necessary. Takako says to Yuta that it “seems like you can use reverse curse technique” shocking Yuta as the environment distorts.

Yuta Okkotsu is more powerful and skilled now than he was in Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0. His abilities have improved enough to largely dominate a special grade curse. In the end however, even Yuta had to use reverse cursed technique. Keeping his abilities a secret from future opponents is a sound strategy but it does have it’s dangers. It’s not made clear why Yuta wishes to hide his abilities but I can only assume he wishes to surprise his enemies. It’s too late now. With Rika still hidden, Yuta may only have one wild card left. Takako seems to have reality distorting or altering abilities. Yuta will probably need to use Rika leaving the civilians in danger.

Top 10 Strongest Elderly Anime Characters

For the Top 10 Strongest Elderly Anime Characters lists, I’m limiting the number of characters from each series to one, for the sake of series diversity. Also my definition of elderly is age and appearance. Old characters like Alucard from Hellsing don’t qualify.

10 – Gran Torino

Series: My Hero Academia

Age: Unknown

Gran Torino also known as Sorahiko Torino is an elderly retired Pro hero and a mentor to Toshinori Yagi (All Might) and Izuku Midoriya (Deku). Despite his retirement he continues to aid the Police Force in fighting the League of Villains. When Torino was younger he was handsome and tall, however he got shorter as he aged.

Despite his age, Gran Torino remains a powerful hero. He was born with the Quirk, Jet. This Quirk allows him to increase his speed with the jet’s that shoot air from his feet. Along with speed he gains immense kicking power. However, Torino’s speed has limits. He cannot propel himself to far in the air without running out of air. Gran Torino has shown super strength, having once struck All Might so hard he vomited. Even with his advanced age he could handle a low-tier Nomu alone.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 163: Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro prepare to fight

Tokyo No.1 Colony, Part 3

Have you ever killed someone who ticks you off . . . it feels better than I expected

Hiromi Higuruma

Summary of Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 163:

After the last chapter set up Yuji and Megumi, we wondered which one would get betrayed. I over thought it, assuming the obvious choice Remi wouldn’t be the traitor. I was wrong, she does set Megumi up to face Reggie. They don’t waste much time and Megumi quickly summons his divine dogs. Yuji is the one that meets Hiromi Higuruma. The former prosecutor, is taking a “bath” in his clothes on, while centered on a stage.

Yuji asks him to use his 100 points to “end the culling game.” Higuruma bluntly says no. He sees the culling games as a substitute for the “powerless” law. Ever if rules are imperfect, he could use the games mechanics to enforce “natural law.” Yuji warns him that “everyone in the country would die.” Higuruma isn’t so sure. He claims the culling game “celebrates permanence.” Feed up, Yuji threatens Higuruma and prepares to fight. Higuruma get out of the tub and releases his cursed spirit.

Hiromi Higuruma’s plan

Analysis

In the beginning of the chapter we get a flashback from Rin Amai. He assesses his classmates, as they pick on someone, as being neither “smart or athletic.” He decides it’s best to avoid “pissing them off” and chooses to “just smile and go with the flow.” Rin is presented as the type avoid being seen as a target. Inside the culling game he did become a target and is being forced to do things against his will.

He’s contrasted with Yuji who appears, an instead tells them to “knock it off.” Yuji’s unwilling to just stand by and allow others to be picked. We already knew this about him but it’s necessary to set up the rest of this chapter. Yuji manhandles all three of the bullies. Rin remains a coward, whereas, Yuji is eager to see Higuruma despite the danger. Megumi is also willing to risk his life for others but in this arc he seems more willing than Yuji to harm his opposition. This doesn’t mean Yuji won’t do it but he resists more.

Megumi is far less trusting than Yuji and in this case he’s right for doing so. After Megumi is betrayed he gives Remi a death stare. She’s not scared but I think she should be. I’m don’t think Higuruma’s plan makes much sense. The culling game doesn’t apply to all of society and Kenjaku wants to eliminate all non-curse users. Basically Kenjaku wants to commit genocide. Will Higuruma consent to that? I suspect Yuji will be able to convince him to choose to save lives. But first, we’ll get to witness what abilities Higuruma has.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 161 and 162: Megumi or Itadori are set up

In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 161 we were introduced to several new enemies. Megumi assumed he and Yuji could travel together once inside the barriers. When they entered the barrier, players are randomly transferred to one of nine locations. If you think about it this makes since. If teams can form then the game would be in their favor. Imagine if a team of ten got together. Who would stop them? Also if the goal of the game is to have players fight each other then population would matter. If you have a small number of fighters then they might run out of opponents. Anyway, Itadori encounters several sorcerers who target new fighters. Yuji is quickly attacked by a mysterious woman with a jet plane. He quickly defeats her and pisses off her boyfriend.

Elsewhere, Megumi encounters a well dressed woman, Remi. He asks her if she knows Higuruma. She claims to know but won’t tell unless Megumi becomes her “Knight.” We know that all the people present in the culling game wish to be there, so I doubt she’s that helpless. In Chapter 162, Yuri attacks Haba. The latter’s Jujutsu technique is a propeller. Yuji’s superior atheisms is on full display here. He rushes and grabs Haba by the ankle. He drags Haba through the side of an apartment building. Yuji’s even able to dodge the propeller as it spins at close range. Yuji hides inside a building hoping to prevent Haba from using his technique.

One of them is lying in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 162.

Megumi or Yuji is betrayed

He fails. Haba is able to adjust the length, angle, speed of rotation and durability of his propeller. He begins slicing the hallway with his propeller. However, Haba has to angle himself such that he exposes the top of his head. Yuji deduces that the “airplane woman,” must have created a binding vow. The farther their body is from the source (their hair) the less durable it is. Yuji strikes Haba in the center of the head. The jujutsu sorcerer assumes Yuji has “shattered” his hand. Yuji knocks him out with a kick.

Yuji can’t ask him about Higuruma now that Haba’s unconscious. Amai Rin introduces himself to Yuji, who he remembers from High School. We return to Megumi and Remi. She claims, she only fighting to avoid being killed. Yuji and Megumi both asks for the whereabouts of Higuruma. They’re given two different answers. Ikebukuro and Shinjuku District. It’s implied that either Amai or Remi are working with Higuruma. We just don’t know which one. I think it’s probably Amai, because Remi is the obvious choice. Amai claims to be a victim of Haba and Hanyu. He’s more sympathetic. however, I don’t think Yuji is going to hold it against him. If he’s not willingly helping then he’ll be someone else for Yuji to save.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 160: Is Yuji Itadori the son of Kenjaku?

I had reread Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 160 to believe what I just read. Did Gege Akutami confirm Kenjaku is Yuji’s mother? If that sounds weird it should. In chapter 143, we get a dream scene of Jin Itadori talking to his father, Wasuke Itadori. Yuji’s grandfather tells Jin to “live however he like’s, but give up on that woman.” Jin tells his father not to be so negative in front of Yuji, as “babies remember more that we think,” suggesting this is more than a random dream but a memory from Yuji. Wasuke loses his temper. He tells Jin he knows he wanted a child with a woman named Kaori. This seems to be Jin’s former wife. However, a woman walks in and asks “what are you talking about?”

The woman isn’t remarkable looking except for the stitching on her forehead. Kenjaku possess an innate ability which allows him to swap bodies with another. The transfer leaves a noticeable stitched scar across the forehead. Kenjaku can use the host’s curse energy, techniques, and has access to the hosts memory. Why would Kenjaku seek to parent Yuji? I suspect it likely has more to do with Yuji’s father than Yuji himself. Anyway, Kenjaku says something interesting in chapter 136, he tells Yuki that he “had” Yuji “ingest cursed objects (Sukuna’s finger).” At this point in the story it’s unclear why Kenjaku would inhabit the body of Yuji’s mother but Gege is slowly unraveling this mystery.

Noritoshi Kamo

Jin’s Second Partner

Pseudo-Geto

Thank you for getting along with my son

Setsuko Sasaki returns in this chapter. If you’ve forgotten her, she’s the friend of Yuji from the Occult Research Club. Kenjaku enters her dreams to bring her out of the barrier. He claims that “those who begin inside the barrier have the right to leave once.” When Sasaki opens her eyes she’s outside with Iguchi. It appears Kenjaku lead many civilians outside of the barriers but why does he care?

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 160 seems to confirm Kenjaku was Yuji’s mother

Elsewhere, Yuji, Panda, Megumi, Kinji and Kirara plan a course of action. They can’t locate Angel via the Kogane. Panda speculates that it might not be her real name. Megumi notes that Master Tengen said to go to colony number 2 in East Tokyo. Kinji decides he and Panda will head there, Yuji and Megumi will head to Tokyo number 1, with Kirara remaining outside. Kinji reasons that he should take on Kashimo best they’re the strongest. Panda, Kinji, Yuji, and Megumi enter the Culling Game.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 159: Hiromi Higuruma’s sense of judgement

At the end of my last review of Jujutsu Kaisen I assumed Hiromi Higuruma was a soul less mass murdered. It turns out he’s not or at least he use to have morals. In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 159, “Judgement,” Gege Akutami explores the corruption in the justice system. Higuruma was a public defender, struggling to represent clients against a rigged system. The chapter presents Higuruma as “never changing.” A public servant is disadvantaged in a court that pits independent defense lawyers against the better funded and staffed public prosecutors. Higuruma claims he’s always had a strong sense of right and wrong. He understands the law isn’t impartial, it’s unfair and real people suffer.

Baring witness to this system and it’s consequences takes a toll on public defenders too. Why do they bother? Is there any hope? I’ve heard Japan has a near perfect conviction rate and Gege Akutami claims “99.9 % of criminal trails end in a guilty verdict.” While, that statistic is an exaggeration the point still stands, Higuruma’s clients were “branded guilty from the start.” Outside of court the lives of Higuruma clients aren’t much freer. The police illegally question them and crime is so common that Higuruma suspects that the murder weapon was just “lying around.” His client, Keita Oe works a live-in job for a shady non-profit. They make their employees work without wages, while paying them rent. Their not allowed to own cats, call the police or ambulances.

Oe is found guilty after a appeal

Hiromi Higuruma calls a retrial

Higuruma manages to get Oe an innocent verdict. He’s certain it will be appealed. It is and Oe is convicted and giving life imprison. Overwhelmed, Higuruma calls court into session after an petition for a final ends in disappointment. He claims they’re having a “retrial” as a curse spirit appears behind him. As we know, curses are created from negative human emotions. The criminal court is certainly a perfect source of negative emotions. I suspect that Higuruma will become like Light Yagami from Death Note, using the curse spirit to exact his own justice. Of course this would require Higuruma to have the ability to manipulate curses like Suguru Geto. Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 159 introduces another interesting character with Hiromi Higuruma. It’s possible Yuji will be able to reach him and finally provide some justice.
