My Hero Academia Season 7, Episode 14 pivots from the main fight between All For One and Deku, to focus on the treatment of the mutant or heteromorphic Quirk users. In the My Hero Academia universe Quirks are generally categorized as Emitter, Transformation, and Mutant. The mutant Quirks grant the user “permanent abnormality” that is directly related to their power. These abilities are considered more “complex,” featuring extra appendages. The mutant Quirk type can pass on the psychical features without passing on the corresponding Quirk. For example, Fumikage Tokoyami’s bird-like head has nothing to do with his Quirk.
These Quirks cannot be turned off and can cause discomfort and inconveniences, for example Ojiro’s tail makes it hard for him to sit down. As a result, they are easy to identify, leading to open discrimination. Considering that most people in My Hero Academia have Quirks, they’re not the source of discrimination. A cult called Creature Rejection Clan aims to “eradicate” all heteromorphs. These prejudices pushes many heteromorphic Quirk users to become villains. Being forced outside of society can make them easy for manipulated by All For One. This aspect of My Hero Academia hasn’t been explored very much and feels forced.
The heteromorphs attack
Spinner and 15,000 warriors from the Paranormal Liberation Front face off against Present Mic and 200 police and heroes. Present Mic tries to use “Loud Out Shout” to stop them but the “meat shield,” they create stop the vibrations. He’s saved by Anima. The police force and heroes are overwhelmed by the numbers and are failing to stop the forces. Anima is attack for being a “traitor.” One of the heteromorphs mentions the “The Great Jeda Purge,” a terrible event where heteromorphs were massacred.
Spinner was given a gigantification Quirk from All For One, which causes him to lose his mind. He and Tentacole have direct conflict. Anima and Tentacole are the most prominent Mutant, Quirk users in the series. They both recall the bigotry they faced growing up but have come to different conclusions than Spinner. As I mentioned early I wished the series focused more on this issue, it would have had more impact. Anima mother told him as a child that he’ll need to channel his anger “properly.” Despite defeating Spinner, the villain is still able to move and reaches the hospital where Kurogiri is located.
