Akira Toriyama, Creator of ‘Dragon Ball,’ Dies at 68

Legendary creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama died on March 1st of a subdural hematoma (when blood collects between the skull and brain). In 1981 he won the Shogakukan Manga Award for best Shonen manga with Dr. Slump. His first manga series, Dr. Slump sold over 35 million copies. The series follows a perverted professor, Senbei Norimaki and his robot Arale Norimaki on their adventures.

Dragon Ball was his next series and would become one of the most successful series of all time. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, the manga series was credited for increasing manga circulation in the 80’s and 90’s.

The Dragon Ball anime series have been credited with increasing anime’s popularity in the West. His work has influenced future generations of manga artist and cartoonist, in particular Eiichiro Oda (One Piece), Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto), and Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter X Hunter).

Akira Toriyama’s influence on the manga industry and impact on the lives of fans and creators is undeniable. He will be remembered by the millions he inspired.
