Kaiju No. 8 Episode 12 Recap: “Hibino Kafka”

Reno and Iharu discussing their limitations. The other members have decided that they are going to ask for clemency for Kafka. Captain Mina has been summoned and is asked to wait until Director General Isao Shinomiya continues to “evaluate,” Kafka. In the last episode, Kafka lost control over himself, given in to the Kaiju within and began attacking wildly. In this form he loses his ability to think and begins attacking without thought. However, despite leaving openings, Kafka’s wild Kaiju form simply destroys itself because it can regenerate.

While Kafka desperately tries to stop himself, Shinomiya starts to become overwhelmed by the Kaiju’s strength. He uses Squadron Style Combat Technique Number Two: Force Blast. The attack is devastating but Kaiju No. 8 is able to move it’s core and regenerate it’s body around it. One of the higher up’s wonders why Shinomiya didn’t just go for the kill earlier. Kikoru hopes it’s to give Kafka a chance to survive. However, Kaiju No. 8 continues to increase in size and strength.

A Kaiju and a weapon

When Kaiju No. 8 gains the upper hand, Kafka sees Kikoru and refuses to kill her father in front of her. He recalls their friendship as a tearful Kikoru yells out to her. Inside the kaiju form, Kafka is “consumed,” by the Kaiju. He’s sees a image of Mina, he snaps out of it, and punches a hole into it’s body, He tells Shinomiya that he’s “not Kaiju No. 8 but Kafka Hibino.” Kafka collapses. We are briefly introduced to Defense Force First Division Captain Gen Narumi, a skinny purple haired man with a large blade.

Mina is question but it’s made very clear to her that her opinion won’t have any effect on Kafka’s life. She recounts what Kafka did during his time with the Defense Force. The council decides that Kafka is a Kaiju but they will allow him to fight for them instead of turning him into a weapon. He reminds them that a decade ago, 200 officers and 3 Captains died, including his wife. With the increase presence of Daikaiju, Kafka will be a massive asset. I have say while I though I would like this series I didn’t think it was going to be this good.

The animation was amazing, the characters were dynamic and complex, and the mysterious world is intriguing. While there’s much more to learn about the Kaiju, the reason Kafka was chosen, and the goals of Kaiju No. 9, this series is turn out to be a great one. I hope it continues to live up to those standards.
