Coco is still learning how the magically world works. She’s intrigued by the magically toilets that disappears human wastes. The magical washrooms appear to be mostly found in homes in the cities. Coco asks Tetia to tell her more about them but she’s too busy. She does offer to give Coco a book that will explain further. We learn that “tools enchanted with magic are called contraptions.” They can be used by no magical users but are expensive. In order to create a contraption, a witch must take a test. As we learned in the previous chapter, this world is deliberately gatekept to prevent to population form losing itself in violent and harmful magic. So they add red tape to ensure that magic users are capable of using the magic they learn.
Qifrey interrupts her to give her the tolls for casting magic: a ink wand, component pestle, woodcruor wand, palm quire, and conjuring ink. Coco struggles with her first lesson as Qifrey is a bit longwinded. He asks her to repeat what she has learned from their lesson. Coco recalls that spells are composed of three elements: “First, a sigil is at it’s center, then signs surround it, and finally an outer ring to complete the seal.” Sigils come in different types: Fire, Water, Light, and Wind. That determines the type of spell. Whereas, signs determine the “form, size, and direction,” the spell will take. When the outer ring is completed the spell activates.
Of course, Coco messes up her first try. The length of one of her sign was off so the direction of the water spell was off. Qifrey leaves to visit the “great hall,” for a few days. While there he meets an old friend, Alaira. She concerned that Coco is connected to the “brimmed caps.” Meanwhile, Agott sends Coco to take the test called the “consent of the crown.” Coco can take three components and three contraptions. She must reach the peak of “the dadah range” without aid and pick a “Diadem herb.” Agott warns Coco that she can only take the test once. Coco prepares for a test she not ready for.
