Witch Hat Atelier – Episode 4

This episode introduces the “Primary Tetrad,” the four greatest sigils. The first is the sigil of Might, or Earth, which manipulates terrain. The second is the sigil of Water, which commands water. The third is the sigil of Fire, used as both blade and shield. Finally, there’s the sigil of Levitation, which allows witches to travel to places impossible to reach by foot. Fire magic is singled out as especially dangerous because of how uncontrollable it is. Coco tries to draw fire magic, but Qifrey stops her, explaining that it would burn the paper and the seal. Instead, levitation magic is required.

After that, Coco tries to repair the shoes she ruined during her test, but her wand is too old to work properly. Qifrey decides to take the group to a magic stationer and brings them to Kalhn, Township of the Marshwood, the largest settlement of witches in the area. He explains that witches built up the shoal to protect the town from Molewyrms. Along the way, Agott splits off on her own to check out some shops. Coco briefly spots a Brimmed Hat, but he disappears before she can react.

They eventually arrive at the shop, which has a massive tree growing inside. There, we’re introduced to Mister Nolnoa, the elderly owner of The Starry Sword.

A Brimmed Hat appears

This episode leans heavily into worldbuilding while pushing the plot forward. Mister Nolnoa explains that everything in his shop is handcrafted by him and his grandson, Tartah, but it quickly becomes clear that Coco is still lacking some foundational knowledge. Nolnoa calls out Qifrey for not properly teaching her and decides to demonstrate things himself. He takes a branch marked with “blacken,” boils it down, and turns it into “woodcruor,” the ink used for casting spells. It’s a simple scene, but it does a lot to clarify how magic works—especially the detail that witches can only produce ink from Silverwood trees.

Things shift once Coco spots a Brimmed Hat outside the shop. She chases after him without thinking, and the others—along with Agott—get pulled in. The sequence escalates quickly: the Brimmed Hat vanishes but manages to teleport the four girls to an unknown location. Tetia tries to get a sense of where they are by flying up, but that immediately backfires when she attracts a dragon and returns in a panic.

Back at the shop, Qifrey realizes something is wrong and starts searching, but he’s clearly rattled. Nolnoa doesn’t offer much help, though Tartah does mention seeing Coco run after the masked witch. There’s a growing sense that things are slipping out of control. Overall, the episode balances exposition with rising tension. The deeper look at sigils, ink, and wand-making adds texture to the magic system, while the sudden involvement of the Brimmed Hat shifts the tone into something more urgent. I’m interested to see what they want with Coco, but the immediate problem is the dragon—and based on how things are going, the girls might be in over their heads.
