Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 163: Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro prepare to fight

Tokyo No.1 Colony, Part 3

Have you ever killed someone who ticks you off . . . it feels better than I expected

Hiromi Higuruma

Summary of Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 163:

After the last chapter set up Yuji and Megumi, we wondered which one would get betrayed. I over thought it, assuming the obvious choice Remi wouldn’t be the traitor. I was wrong, she does set Megumi up to face Reggie. They don’t waste much time and Megumi quickly summons his divine dogs. Yuji is the one that meets Hiromi Higuruma. The former prosecutor, is taking a “bath” in his clothes on, while centered on a stage.

Yuji asks him to use his 100 points to “end the culling game.” Higuruma bluntly says no. He sees the culling games as a substitute for the “powerless” law. Ever if rules are imperfect, he could use the games mechanics to enforce “natural law.” Yuji warns him that “everyone in the country would die.” Higuruma isn’t so sure. He claims the culling game “celebrates permanence.” Feed up, Yuji threatens Higuruma and prepares to fight. Higuruma get out of the tub and releases his cursed spirit.

Hiromi Higuruma’s plan

Analysis

In the beginning of the chapter we get a flashback from Rin Amai. He assesses his classmates, as they pick on someone, as being neither “smart or athletic.” He decides it’s best to avoid “pissing them off” and chooses to “just smile and go with the flow.” Rin is presented as the type avoid being seen as a target. Inside the culling game he did become a target and is being forced to do things against his will.

He’s contrasted with Yuji who appears, an instead tells them to “knock it off.” Yuji’s unwilling to just stand by and allow others to be picked. We already knew this about him but it’s necessary to set up the rest of this chapter. Yuji manhandles all three of the bullies. Rin remains a coward, whereas, Yuji is eager to see Higuruma despite the danger. Megumi is also willing to risk his life for others but in this arc he seems more willing than Yuji to harm his opposition. This doesn’t mean Yuji won’t do it but he resists more.

Megumi is far less trusting than Yuji and in this case he’s right for doing so. After Megumi is betrayed he gives Remi a death stare. She’s not scared but I think she should be. I’m don’t think Higuruma’s plan makes much sense. The culling game doesn’t apply to all of society and Kenjaku wants to eliminate all non-curse users. Basically Kenjaku wants to commit genocide. Will Higuruma consent to that? I suspect Yuji will be able to convince him to choose to save lives. But first, we’ll get to witness what abilities Higuruma has.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 161 and 162: Megumi or Itadori are set up

In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 161 we were introduced to several new enemies. Megumi assumed he and Yuji could travel together once inside the barriers. When they entered the barrier, players are randomly transferred to one of nine locations. If you think about it this makes since. If teams can form then the game would be in their favor. Imagine if a team of ten got together. Who would stop them? Also if the goal of the game is to have players fight each other then population would matter. If you have a small number of fighters then they might run out of opponents. Anyway, Itadori encounters several sorcerers who target new fighters. Yuji is quickly attacked by a mysterious woman with a jet plane. He quickly defeats her and pisses off her boyfriend.

Elsewhere, Megumi encounters a well dressed woman, Remi. He asks her if she knows Higuruma. She claims to know but won’t tell unless Megumi becomes her “Knight.” We know that all the people present in the culling game wish to be there, so I doubt she’s that helpless. In Chapter 162, Yuri attacks Haba. The latter’s Jujutsu technique is a propeller. Yuji’s superior atheisms is on full display here. He rushes and grabs Haba by the ankle. He drags Haba through the side of an apartment building. Yuji’s even able to dodge the propeller as it spins at close range. Yuji hides inside a building hoping to prevent Haba from using his technique.

One of them is lying in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 162.

Megumi or Yuji is betrayed

He fails. Haba is able to adjust the length, angle, speed of rotation and durability of his propeller. He begins slicing the hallway with his propeller. However, Haba has to angle himself such that he exposes the top of his head. Yuji deduces that the “airplane woman,” must have created a binding vow. The farther their body is from the source (their hair) the less durable it is. Yuji strikes Haba in the center of the head. The jujutsu sorcerer assumes Yuji has “shattered” his hand. Yuji knocks him out with a kick.

Yuji can’t ask him about Higuruma now that Haba’s unconscious. Amai Rin introduces himself to Yuji, who he remembers from High School. We return to Megumi and Remi. She claims, she only fighting to avoid being killed. Yuji and Megumi both asks for the whereabouts of Higuruma. They’re given two different answers. Ikebukuro and Shinjuku District. It’s implied that either Amai or Remi are working with Higuruma. We just don’t know which one. I think it’s probably Amai, because Remi is the obvious choice. Amai claims to be a victim of Haba and Hanyu. He’s more sympathetic. however, I don’t think Yuji is going to hold it against him. If he’s not willingly helping then he’ll be someone else for Yuji to save.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 160: Is Yuji Itadori the son of Kenjaku?

I had reread Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 160 to believe what I just read. Did Gege Akutami confirm Kenjaku is Yuji’s mother? If that sounds weird it should. In chapter 143, we get a dream scene of Jin Itadori talking to his father, Wasuke Itadori. Yuji’s grandfather tells Jin to “live however he like’s, but give up on that woman.” Jin tells his father not to be so negative in front of Yuji, as “babies remember more that we think,” suggesting this is more than a random dream but a memory from Yuji. Wasuke loses his temper. He tells Jin he knows he wanted a child with a woman named Kaori. This seems to be Jin’s former wife. However, a woman walks in and asks “what are you talking about?”

The woman isn’t remarkable looking except for the stitching on her forehead. Kenjaku possess an innate ability which allows him to swap bodies with another. The transfer leaves a noticeable stitched scar across the forehead. Kenjaku can use the host’s curse energy, techniques, and has access to the hosts memory. Why would Kenjaku seek to parent Yuji? I suspect it likely has more to do with Yuji’s father than Yuji himself. Anyway, Kenjaku says something interesting in chapter 136, he tells Yuki that he “had” Yuji “ingest cursed objects (Sukuna’s finger).” At this point in the story it’s unclear why Kenjaku would inhabit the body of Yuji’s mother but Gege is slowly unraveling this mystery.

Setsuko Sasaki returns in this chapter. If you’ve forgotten her, she’s the friend of Yuji from the Occult Research Club. Kenjaku enters her dreams to bring her out of the barrier. He claims that “those who begin inside the barrier have the right to leave once.” When Sasaki opens her eyes she’s outside with Iguchi. It appears Kenjaku lead many civilians outside of the barriers but why does he care?

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 160 seems to confirm Kenjaku was Yuji’s mother

Elsewhere, Yuji, Panda, Megumi, Kinji and Kirara plan a course of action. They can’t locate Angel via the Kogane. Panda speculates that it might not be her real name. Megumi notes that Master Tengen said to go to colony number 2 in East Tokyo. Kinji decides he and Panda will head there, Yuji and Megumi will head to Tokyo number 1, with Kirara remaining outside. Kinji reasons that he should take on Kashimo best they’re the strongest. Panda, Kinji, Yuji, and Megumi enter the Culling Game.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 157 and 158: Hakari joins and new players are revealed

In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 157, Megumi Fushiguro manages to subdue Kirara. He quickly release Kirara and bows. Megumi begs to be heard. Suddenly, Yuji Itadori is knocked outside. Yuji tells Panda and Megumi to not “interfere.” Kinji Hakari begs wailing on Yuji who’s decided that it’s best to take the hits, so Hakari will accept him. Hakari agrees to “listen to his spiel,” as long as Yuji can remain standing. Yuji compares Hakari’s punches to being “hit with a serrated bat.” Jujutsu Kaisen has established Gojo as the standard. However, Gojo himself has suggested that Hakari, Yuta, Megumi, and Yuji have potential to surpass him. Hakari was never going to use the power Gojo suggested but like Yuta we get a small glimpse of it through Yuji’s eyes.

Hakari accuses Yuji of being a tool for Jujutsu High. Yuji agrees. He says that he’s a “cog.” He sees himself as a tool to eradicate curses. Hakari unsurprisingly isn’t impressed. He calls Yuji “boring” and knocks him into the wall. Hakari tells Panda and Megumi to leave, but Yuji has other ideas. Despite being hit three times unguarded, Yuji gets up. Impressed, Hakari agrees to “cut a deal.” In Chapter 158, Hakari is shocked to hear of Gojo’s sealing. Panda casually mentions the death of the Principal. Hakari agrees to help with the culling game. In exchange he wants Jujutsu Regulations changed. Megumi tells him he’s the head of the Zenin clan, even though we know (they don’t) that he and Maki are the only ones left.

Two new players are introduced

It’s likely Maki and Megumi will have to prove the Zenin clan still matters, but I doubt either will want to. Regardless, Hakari and Kirara are on board. Suddenly, a Kogane appears announcing the new rule added by Hajime Kashimo. A Kogane is a “liaison between players and the game,” and is assigned to specific players. This one is assigned to Yuji, which Megumi notes is strange. Yuji shouldn’t be counted as a player yet. Since Kenjaku (pseudo Geto) claimed he “had” Yuji ingest cursed objects (Sukuna’s finger) Yuji is automatically included in the game. Megumi still thinks it’s strange considering Yuji “ingested Sukuna’s finger of his own free will.”

I immediately thought of Aizen’s manipulation of Ichigo in Bleach, which always struck me as implausible. Is Kenjaku capable of that kind of planning? Hajime Kashimo adds a new rule granting players access to a players name, points, rules they add, and current location. They had scored 200 points prior to adding the new rule. Hajime is at least 400 years old considering they suggested Jujutsu Sorcerer’s were “tougher 400 years ago.” Kenjaku has implied that sorcerers were stronger in the past as well. Megumi asks for a list of player with 100 points or more. There’s only one other than Hajime, Hiromi Higuruma, Megumi hopes he can force them to create a rule to free his sister. If they add a rule allowing players to spend points to get out of the game with the condition that a substitute player be brought in.

If Megumi can use himself as the substitute it might work. However, trying to control Hajime or Hiromi seems unlikely. To amass that many points mean they’ve killed a lot of people. I doubt they will have much compassion for Megumi. Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 158 sets up the culling game well and I’m excited for the upcoming chapters.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 155: Yuri Itadori is exposed by Hakari

In the last chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, Kirara spotted Panda and Fushiguro outside of Kinji Hakari’s location, resulting in a battle. Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 155, “Fever” begin with Hakari explaining how much he loves “fever.” It’s what “people get high on,” when they make mistakes. Without people cannot fall in love. The most direct way to deal with fever is to gamble. Hakari believes that life itself is a gamble and everyone does it. He hope to gain “control over Japan,” by controlling the fever through the fight club. With the reveal to the public that cursed spirits are real and the pressure on Jujutsu Headquarters, Hakari plans to take advantage of the chaos.

He expects the Jujutsu regulations to change and wants to force them to acknowledge the fight club. Suddenly his phone rings. He ignores it and offers Itadori a drink. Yuji refuses alcohol as he’s underage. When Hakari asks if he knows Gojo can’t “drink either,” Yuji ruins the plan by pretending he has no idea who Gojo is. Hakari asks him if he’s a Jujutsu High spy and attacks with his Cursed Technique. He creates two doors, attempting to catch Yuji in-between them. Yuji dodges, trying to explain himself. However, Hakari manages to crush Yuji neck in two more doors. He explains that when he gets a call from Kirara it means “somethings up.” Yuji head buts him and demands Hakari listen.

We need to convince Kirara

Elsewhere, Megumi and Panda try to convince Kirara they mean no harm. Megumi explains they need Hakari’s cooperation with dealing with the recent Jujutsu terror attacks. Panda explains why they came into conflict with the higher ups in the first place. Panda says that the more “conservative” faction of Jujutsu High prefer more conventional Jujutsu like Nobara Kugisaki’s Straw Doll Technique over the modern techniques that feature technology like cursed video tapes. Megumi reveals that Gojo was sealed and that’s why they need them. Kirara doesn’t appear to believe them but Megumi thinks they must convince Kirara if they’ll have any chance to meet Hakari.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 155 reminds us of something Gojo always stated, the Jujutsu High leaders are too conservative. What specifically made them conservative was never explained until now. I wonder what actually is consider modern cursed techniques. For example the Zenin Families inherited technique, projection sorcery, appears to turn opponents into flat screen tv’s. For specifically the technique “divides one second into twenty-four frames of animation using the user’s field of view as the projection angle of view.” Furthermore, how does cursed tools fit in. Yoshinobu Gakuganji use of an electric guitar could be too modern. I don’t expect this conflict to get too violent and believe Yuji will convince Hakari to join them. I’m really excited to see Kirara and Hakari’s techniques.
