Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Episode 18: Yuji’s heartbreak continues as Mahito kills Nanami

As the Shibuya Incident comes to a close It’s starting to be clear Yuji isn’t going to be the same. Yuji has always been kindhearted raised by his grandfather to be caring for others. In contrast, Mahito hates humanity and uses them like toys, turning them into “Transfigured Humans.” Nanami describes him as being “extremely immature,” and taking pleasure from “toying with humans.” Our first major encounter with Mahito was when he manipulated Junpei into becoming a cursed user then killed him when he wasn’t useful.

He did this in front of Yuji, evoking Yuji’s rage. Mahito learns that Yuji’s attacks can harm him making Yuji a “natural,” enemy. In Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Episode 18, “Right and Wrong,” Yuji faces Mahito for the second time. Nanami managed to survive his encounter with Jogo, however, half his upper body and face is charred. He staggers into a horde of transfigure humans as Mahito follows. This episode gave Nanami a greater send off than the manga did, showing Nanami on a beach in Malaysia (his dream vacation) while he battles for his life. It’s we’ll done.

Mahito kills Nanami

The moment is emotional as a favorite character struggles to survive. Nanami manages to exorcise all of the transfigured humans before Mahito touches his back. Accepting his fate, Nanami sees his old friend Yu Haibara. He asks him “why he came back to sorcery?” After hearing the fighting in the subway Yuji rushes to witness the event only to find Mahito touching Nanami. Yuji is too far away to help and Nanami tells him “You take it from here,” before Mahito blows up his top half.

Understandable, Yuji is devasted to witness his mentor and friend being murdered. At this point the voice acting is amazing. The emotion from Yuji and the lack of concern from Mahito is conveyed so well. I generally don’t notice voice acting but this was impressive. Heartbroken and enraged he rushes towards Mahito losing his balance to the remains of the transfigured humans. As I mentioned before Yuji doesn’t have a lot of techniques and his a physical powerhouse. This results in fights that are less spectacular (Sukuna vs Mahoraga) but more intimate (Yuji vs Choso). Yuji is going to need to control himself and focus if he wants to kill Mahito once an for all.
