One Piece Chapter 939 – An Old Leopard Knows The Way

Zoro meets Hiyori, Momonosuke’s sister

Hiyori reveals that she’s the sister of Momonosuke, understandably shocking Zoro. She says that she “remembers the death of her parents and disappearance of her brother 20 years ago.” However, she didn’t didn’t believe her brother when he promised that he would return. When Zoro asks her why she didn’t come to the future as well, she tells him that “it was to ensure the Kozuki Family’s bloodline would survive if the plan did not go right.” Zoro mentions to her that so far they have meet six of the nine “Red Scabbards.” She tells him that the other 3 are, Kawamatsu, Denjiro, and Ashura Doji.

Kozuki allies imprisoned

Orochi’s forces have manage to capture many of the allies of the Kozuki family. They are mocked by Fukurokuju for their stupidity for tattooing the crescent moon on their bodies. I have too agree that the tattoos are incredibly dumb thing to do. However, by putting all of them in a single prison and broadcasting it to the town they actually make it easier for the rest of the Strawhat’s and Heart pirates find and rescue them.

Luffy tries to learn a new form of Haki

At the Udon prisoner’s mine, Luffy and Hyo face off against gifters Madilloman and Alpacaman. Luffy tells Hyo how to move and Hyo is able to avoid the attacks from Alpacaman. Luffy easily dodges attacks from Madilloman, while trying to use the form of Haki that allows the user to emit haki like a force of air. Hyo identifies the technique as “Goken.” He then uses it on Alpacaman, knocking him out. He offers to teach Luffy, who’s eager to learn. I still believe that Big Mom will fight Queen, but if Luffy keeps getting stronger she may not need to. While, Luffy can be an airhead, he’s an expert at battle. Like most shonen anime he will quickly learn what Hyo teaches him.

One Piece Chapter 936 Review – The Great Sumo Inferno

Raizo and Kawamatsu

Raizo is surprised that Kawamatsu is still alive. A former follower of Kozuki Oden, he was imprisoned in Udon. Kin’emon considers him , along with Denjiro and Ashura Doji as one of the most powerful followers of Oden. He clearly has high endurance, as he has been forced to eat poisonous fish for 13 years without dying or getting ill. So far one of the central themes of this arc is time travel. I think its both in the literal since (Toki had time travel abilities) and more figurative, when finding characters from the past. Raizo plans to free Kawamatsu, but is interrupted by guards. He disappears in a smoke bomb.

Luffy and Hyogoro, Sumo tag team

Queen happily talks about executing, Hyo and Luffy. He reveals his event, “Queen’s Contraception Concert: Sumo Inferno” that excites the guards. Luffy and Hyo are fitted with collars that will decapitate them if they fall outside the ring. Queen then informs them that “the pair of them will be fighting a series of sumo matches.” However, if he joined with Kaido’s crew he could go free. Kiado has made used this sort of coercion to great effect. It was never going to work on Luffy, but it has worked on others. In theory he could pretend that to join Kiado and simply escape. Regardless, Luffy is excited to fight in the ring and now that he doesn’t have the seastone cuffs on it will be easy. When the fighting starts, Luffy uses Haki to knock them out.

The raid at the bathhouse

Drake and Hawkins have raided the bathhouse in the Flower Capital. Drake is on a mission to kill Soba Mask. Hawkins demands that all the bathers show their ankles so he could see if they have a crescent moon tattoo. The fan service in this series has increased during this arc. Time will tell if this is limited to the arc or Oda is signalling that he is going to go for fan service more later. Regardless, Nami takes out several patrons, Sanji and Drake when faint from nosebleeds when she drops her towel. Nami, Robin, Sanji and Shinobu escape. Finally, Zoro confronts a large swordsmen who took his sword. Zoro says he intends to take the weapons from him. The two begin to battle.

One Piece Chapter 934 Review – Hyogoro of the Flower

The Big Mom Pirates debate what to do. Perospero notes that Big Mom must still be alive because of her Vivre card. They assume that Kaido and his crew has taken her captive. Smoothie states that it’s unlikely to be true for their mother. In the Kuri Wastelands, Big Mom heads to Udon on a “crocoturtle that she tamed with two punches.” Big Mom seems to have lost just her memories of who she is, but not her power and her willingness to use it. Still hungry, Big Mom asks were Udon is located.

Nami, Robin, Brook, Shinobu, and Kanjuro discuss the events at Orochi’s palace. Robin says that she is “ashamed,” to have gained so little information. She then rattles off a large lists of information she did uncovered. Most importantly, Brook reveals that he found a poneglyph in the basement of the palace. However, He wasn’t able to write it down. Robin concludes that the poneglyph is at Kaido’s headquarters in Onigashuma.

Meanwhile, Sanji, Usopp, Franky, and Law are in the Flower Capital, the citizens mourn the death of Komurasaki’s. The Smart Den Den Mushi, the “smartsnail” is introduced. We learn that Kid has escaped from Udon’s prison. At the prison, Luffy is harassed by Gaoler Alpacaman who grossly spits on Luffy as he speaks. It’s unlikely that Kid escaped, as he didn’t remove his seastone handcuffs. Grandpa Hyo is assaulted by the guards, he refuse to give up his kibi dango.

Hyo reveals himself to be Hyogoro of the Flower. Luffy’s actions reminded him of ” the old days when noble men lived in Wano,” and he is now “willing to die with this fulfillment.” When Luffy sees him being attacked, he predictably charges at the guards. As he does so, Queen arrives, commenting on the noise. My first though regarding Queen’s arrival was that he and Big Mom are going to fight. We haven’t witness Big Mom fight in a full battle. I think this could be an opportunity for us to see what she’s capable of. It appears that the Strawhat’s are going to meet at the bathhouse.

I’m a little tired of the Strawhat’s being separated. I look forward to seeing them together again. This is the second so can impenetrable prison that Luffy has found himself trapped in. He will likely escape in the same way that he did in Impel Down, by inspiring the other prisoners to riot. This would probably lead to him having more support than he would normally. Also, apparently Page One wasn’t difficult for Sanji.

One Piece Chapter 933 Review – A Samurai’s Mercy

As Lord Orochi demands that Komurasaki beg for her life, we learn that his devil fruit is called the Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Yamata no Orochi. She refuses to beg, resulting in Orochi becoming further enraged and rampaging. His eight head beg to attack people almost at random. Eventually, he captures Komurasaki in one of his mouths. Robin tries to flee with Toko, as the still laughing girl asks her to ave Komurasaki. Meanwhile, the ninja’s continue to pursue her.

Brook rescues her, by using his soul to appear as a ghost. It’s at this point you realize that most of the citizen or certainly the ninja are ignorant of the devil fruit abilities. It was made clear at the beginning of the Wano arc, that Wano Country is isolated from the rest of the world and have no affiliation with World Government. The consequence of this is a lack of knowledge of the rest of the world. When Brook uses his soul ability the ninja’s assume that he’s a mythological ghost called Gashadokuro. When Robin uses her Gigantesco Mano ability the ninja wonders if she’s a ghost as well.

In the ceiling, Shinobu tells Nami that they need to back up Robin and Brook. They are confronted by a ninja named Hanzo. He seems to remember her as a more beautiful, kunoichi dubbed the “man killer.” He thinks he made a mistake as she has gained a lot of weight. Insulted, she uses Ninja Art: Ball Crusher, then Ninja Art: Paralysis. She then knocks the ceiling down knocking out some of Lord Orochi’s heads. Meanwhile, during all the chaos, Kyoshiro “kills” Komurasaki. I don’t believe that she dead. It seems more likely that her “death” was staged.

Lord Orochi is upset that Kyoshiro would kill her. He claims that it “was a samurai’s mercy.” He then notices the hidden message from the Kozuki Family. Orochi takes his attention from Komurasaki to Toko. However, Nami uses Zeus to unleash a devastating thunder attack. We don’t see the result of this, as we head to the beach to find Tsuru feeding Big Mom. Still without her memory, Big Mom is grateful for their kindness. Chopper is concerned that Big Mom will regain her memory at any point. He tells her that there’s a lot of shiruko in Udon.

Chopper is clever here. Sending Big Mom to go to Udon prison could at least be the distraction needed to free Luffy and if she regains her memory all the better. If Udon is so hard to escape from someone with Big Mom’s power could can help. How much manipulation Chopper needs to engage with to get Big Mom to help remains to be seen, but she still seems to be obsessed with food. The chapter ends with us being told that the ” decisive battle against the Beasts Pirates will occur in nine days.” Now what does this mean in terms of time. Is it nine days in real time or in the One Piece universe? It seems like it makes more since that it’s in the One Piece universe. Regardless, I’m excited to see this battle. I’m hoping it could rival the war with the Whitebeard Pirates.

One Piece Chapter 932 Review – The Shogun and the Courtesan

Chapter 932 Cover

Robin is threatened with death. If she “tells the truth,” she will die a painless death, however, if she lies she will be susceptible to “excruciating torture.” When asked “what is she doing here?” she responds that she is “tracking the flow of money inside the flower capital.” When she answers she’s attacked with shuriken’s, but Robin disappears. She used her devil fruit abilities to create a human clone of herself. Robin confirms that she was spotted to Nami, Brook and Shinobu, and there are 11 ninja in the castle.

Robin returns to the banquet hall, Orochi greets her. When the Oniwabanshu being crawling across the ceiling, Robin uses a mask to hide her face. The conversation shifts to how the yakuza uses brute force against their enemies. Orochi tells his men that this year “marks the 12th since the death of Oden Kozuki.” He tells them of the plot of the “nine Red Sheaths,” to get revenge and take “his head.” His men seem to think he’s delusional and shouldn’t be concerned with the followers of Oden.

O-Toko uncontrollable laughter

He believes that the attacks on Jack and Yokozuna may have come from Kinemon. Orochi claims that he saw Oden die with his own eyes, but the dead body of his son, Momonosuke was never recovered. I’ve complained about the size of the characters in this arc, but some of them are obviously needed. It’s interesting to see the adversaries in this arc speak and we get a since of their motivation. Orochi’s men don’t take this threat seriously. We know that he’s right but they don’t. This is of course to the benefit of the Strawhat’s and Kinemon.

Komurasaki slaps Orochi

O-toko begins laughing, much to the ire of Orochi. The little girl can’t control her laughter, Orochi draws his sword when Komurasaki tells him to “stop.” She even goes as far as slapping him. She seems to justify her actions by claiming that she “won’t yield a single step, when she believe she right.” She stands in front of Orochi as he activates his devil fruit, transforming into a eight headed dragon. Komurasaki claims that as a daughter of a samurai, she would rather die than be a “weak” wife. Orochi calls her a whore. Meanwhile, Robin grabs O-toko, exposing herself to the ninja.

Orochi in his Devil Fruit form

I’ve stated this before, while I love the art style of One Piece it is almost impossible to tell the difference between some female characters. I couldn’t tell which characters was Robin or Komurasaki. It’s a small problem though, but considering the variety of character designs this series has it’s interesting that all his “beautiful woman” tend to look the same. Maybe he models them after his wife or something. Komurasaki is clearly the daughter of one of the samurai, probably the daughter of Oden and sister of Momo. I wonder if Robin will be able to escape from this situation, carrying O-toko will make this harder. That said Brook, Nami and Shinobu are waiting.

One Piece Chapter 922 Review: Beasts Pirates General: Kaido

Luffy takes off to confront Kaido. Having seen that Okobore Town is under direct threat Luffy heads there. Law reveals that he, Luffy and Zoro have been exposed. However, he claims that “this shouldn’t effect the plan.” He plans to join Luffy against Kaido. Meanwhile, at Bakura Town the civilians flee as Kiado begins his assault.

Kiado is revealed to be drunk, resulting in Jack fearing his rampage. Hawkins informs Kiado that “Luffy and Law are at the ruins of Oden Castle.” Even though this is true, Hawkins tells Jack that he lied to ” Kaido in order to stop his rampage and also to try eliminating a suspicious light there that has led to rumors about the Kozuki Family’s return.”

Kiado immediately attacks Oden Castle, as the Strawhat and allies flee. He uses a massive attack that destroy’s Oden Castle. It’s not clear that the Strawhat’s got away in time. Regardless, the people of Kuri watch as Luffy jumps above Kiado and uses Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun on the unsuspecting Kiado. Too much didn’t happen in this chapter, but the initial attack from Luffy on Kiado was shocking.

Most of us probably thought that it would take longer for Luffy to encounter him. Considering, Kiado’s drunken state and the fact that he didn’t seem to notice Luffy, I think he will be knocked unconsciousness, but remain won’t be harmed. This will save the village by ending Kiado’s rampage. Finally, I think there’s zero chance that the Strawhat’s and their allies are harmed. I think the Kunoichi would have help them disappear before the attack.
