Sakura Haruno is one of the most divisive characters in anime. People hate her personality, her Sasuke obsession, lack of backstory, and her powers pale compared to Sasuke and Naruto. All this is true. Sakura is terrible to Rock Lee and Naruto in the early seasons. With Sasuke, she just pathetic. He tries to kill her several times and she still “loves” him. But they get married and have a daughter, so I guess it’s okay. So how can she be my favorite? Only if I ignore all of that and focus on what she could have been or should have been. Sakura is terrible because Kishimoto wrote her that way. That’s his right as the creator of Naruto, but I think he did her a disservice. I cover why I think Sakura isn’t useless and why I like her on my 20th Day of the Salty Anime Challenge.
Sakura’s potential is wasted in the beginning of Naruto. She was superior to Naruto and Sasuke with chakra control, genjutsu, and she’s smarter. Unlike them, however, she wasn’t gifted with the chakra of the nine-tails or blessed with the sharingan and curse seal. Sakura shines briefly in the beginning of the part 2. After training with Tsunade, she develops super strength and masters medical jutsu. Sakura’s biggest battle moment is the fight between herself, Chiyo, and Sasori. During the battle, Sakura impresses the far more experienced Chiyo and Sasori.
I originally favored Naruto over her, but I was more impressed with her abilities. She had a lot of potential, but had to work harder than her teammates. I believe that “Sakura’s transformation from the beginning of the series, both personality and ability, changed more than anyone and she had to work with less than her teammates.” If you judge Sakura from her anime portrayal you’ll hate her, but if you look at her potential and ignore the limitation of how she’s written you might love. I do.

The Chunin Exams marks the moment we get to see the rest of the current ninja generation. We are introduced to the rest of the Rookie Nine, Team Guy, the Three Sand Siblings, and Orochimaru. Until this point, I found Naruto to be mediocre but characters like Rock Lee and Orochimaru made me fall in love with the series. This arc also displayed the value intellect was to ninja. The first phase of the exam required the genin to use their skills to acquire information. However, the most exciting part of this arc was the preliminaries. With too many teams passing the exam, the 20 remaining genin we pitched against one another to cut down the numbers. Some of the matches we duds, but a few are classics. The same is true of the finals matches between the surviving winners.

Five Kage Summit
Manga Volume: 49 – 51
Anime Episodes: 197 – 214
This arc is filled with action but I think it’s most interesting for is the focus on the political aspect of Naruto. The arc centers on the Summit between the current Kages, Gaara, Onoki, Mei, A, and Danzo. While we’re familiar with Gaara, the other Kages are more of a mystery. Danzo uses Tsunade’s coma as an opportunity to claim the title of Hokage for himself. Danzo is revealed to have possession of the Sharingan. The Kages argue over their ideological differences, with A claiming (correctly) that each of the other villages used the Akatsuki to gain power. Of course, the summit is interrupted by Sasuke and the rest of Taka. In the fights that follow, A proves to be a powerhouse, and Onoki and Terumi show off some of their abilities. Finally, Madara declares war over the remaining tailed beast.

The beginning of this arc introduces us to Killer B, the host of the Eight Tailed Beast. He quickly becomes a fan favorite, while the rapping is bad and stereotypical, he’s a fun character that gives Sasuke a fight. It’s also the first time that we witness a Jinchuriki fight alongside his beast. After this fight, Pain invades Konoha. It’s a devastating assault that results in the “death” of Kakashi and the destruction of Konoha. The highlight of this arc is the fight between Naruto and Pain, with the former using the senjutsu (Sage) techniques and the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken technique. Hinata confesses her love for Naruto and the latter finally meets his father.

Sasuke defects from Konoha in pursuit of power. This marks the moment Sasuke becomes a villain. Tsunade sends a five-man genin squad to retrieve him. Lead by Shikamura, the team of Naruto, Neji, Choji, and Kiba face off against the Sound Four. This arc features several battles that felt consequential. Each fight showed the depth of skill each ninja from Konoha possed. Furthermore, we got to see the specific techniques of the Akimichi, Hyuga, and Inuzuka clans. While Sasuke was becoming a villain, Gaara and siblings became allies. Watching the siblings fight for Konoha gave me chills. Throw in drunken fist Rock Lee and the epic battle between Sasuke and Naruto, this is one of the best Naruto arcs.

Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant
Manga Volumes: 40 – 42
Anime Episode: 127 – 133
This arc is short but it was the most impactful for me. Jiraiya was always my favorite Naruto character. I loved everything about him, his character design, humor, and abilities. However, we never saw the extent of those abilities until this arc. Jiraiya investigates Pain, infiltrating Amegakure. While there he encounters former students Konan and Nagato. Pain gets introduced and he’s a stoic villain that plans on forcing the world to stop wars, by creating a jutsu powerful enough to “wipe away entire nations.” It’s not the most original of motives but Pain proves to be a formidable villain. The battle between the two is probably my favorite and what made Naruto the best shonen series.
One of the Legendary Sannin finally got to fight with their full power. This fight perfectly balances the powerful techniques of Jiraiya and Pain, while including strategy, and skills that feel earned. When you feel like Jiraiya has defeated a mysterious opponent, it’s revealed (not completely to the audience) what Pain is. After Jiraiya loses his arm and has to face The Six Paths of Pain you not sure he can survive. However, just when we begin to think he will escape, he sacrifices his life to protect Konoha. It was a heartbreaking moment that made me cry. I think it’s the best Naruto arc ever.
Kakashi is one of the most famous shinobi in Naruto. Know the Copy Ninja, he had copied over 1000 jutsus. He’s one of the most powerful ninja’s in the series later becoming the Sixth Hokage. His appearance is often a source of interest for fans and characters in the series. He hides his face under a mask. Most of his friends have forgotten what he even looks like, although, Teuchi and Ayame consider him to be handsome. In addition to this and the fact that he hides his Sharingan under his forehead protector, and also has spiky white hair that leans to the left.
The full demon brother of Inuyasha, Sesshomaru is a powerful demon. He began to hate his brother after their father sacrificed himself for him. Sesshomaru considered this act a sign of weakness. He always calm, calculating, and confident. Sesshomaru in battle was able to determine his opponent’s strength and only used power necessary to kill them. Despite his personality, he did show that he could care for others even humans, like his companions Rin and Jaken. In his human form, Sesshomaru is good looking, with pointed ears, and long white hair with bangs. In keeps his white hair when he transforms into his Yokai form.
A champion figure skater, coach, and choreographer, Victor is a legend in the skating world. He was the top figure skater at 16, having won five consecutive World Championships and Grand Prix Finals. It seems to be a trend that white-haired characters are considered more attractive than average. Regardless, Victor is considered hot. He has short gray hair with bangs that cover his left eye.
As a human Kurama has red hair, but when he reverts to his demon form he becomes a literal silver-haired fox. Kurama is calm, calculating, and analytical character. When he transforms his personality shifts and he becomes cruel and merciless even though he maintains his intellect. In this form, Kurama has fox ears, silver hair (including his tail), and wears an outfit that resembles a toga.
Jiraiya is one of the legendary sannin along with Tsunade and Orochimaru. A powerful ninja and world-renowned pervert, Jiraiya became the Toad Sage. Later he would become the teacher of Minato Namikaze (4th Hokage), Nagato (Pain), and Naruto. Jiraiya was generally silly and fun-loving. At first, you might assume Jiraiya’s hair is due to his advanced age, however, he’s had white hair since birth. As he got older his hair grows to waist length.
Brock is the Pewter City Gym Leader. He raises his 9 siblings after his parent abandon them. Brock hopes to become a Pokemon Doctor. As anime perverts go, Brock is G rated. He’s obsessed with woman, although he’s always ends up heartbroken. He particularly “loves” Nurse Joys and Office Jenny’s. The running gag in Pokemon is when Brock sees a beautiful woman he over reacts and is dragged away by someone in the group. It was originally Misty, but in Advanced Generation Max did it, followed by Croagunk in Diamond & Pearl.
Minora Mineta is the short hero named Grape Juice. He has the Quirk, Pop Off. It allows him to “produce and pluck ball-shaped objects from his head; the balls grow back just as fast as they’re plucked. The balls are incredibly sticky and will stick to any surface.” Mineta is infamous for his perverted behavior. Almost no one finds this behavior appealing, except Denki. Mineta’s mind often wanders off as he thinks of lewd thoughts. He’s not beyond peeping at unsuspecting girls and is often depicted drooling. His main reason for becoming a hero is to be popular among women.
3. Master Roshi
Master Roshi is the hermit, pervert, and martial arts master in the Dragon Ball series. He trained Gohan, Goku, Ox-King, Krillin, and Yamcha. He’s over 300 years old and spends most of his time reading, watching t.v., and using the internet to search for porn. He really enjoys watching “Wide Thigh Aerobics,” and has a fondness for Dirty Magazines. Roshi once gave Bulma a dragon ball after she offers to show her “panties.” (She’s not wearing any). He often lusts after any woman in his presence.
Even if it kills me, I refuse to kick a woman!!!!
Sanji is the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. A chivalrous perv, he has earned the name “ero-cook.” He constantly flirts with any woman he sees. He claimed that Nami was “98.72% of the reason he joined Luffy’s crew in the first place.” His perversion increases after being trapped on Momoiro Island. Sanji often lusts after his crewmates Nami and Robin. His amorous feelings don’t just stop at humans but extend to mermaids and minks. Sanji can get caught up in what he calls his ” hurricane of love.” His chivalry results in Sanji being unwilling to fight women. Sanji has sworn to “never let women be insulted or injured while he can still stand, regardless of how attractive (or unattractive) they are, even in life-or-death situations.”
Jiraiya is one of the legendary three Sannin. He’s generally light-hearted and over the top. He considers himself to be “super-pervert with no equal.” He loved spying on woman bathing. Jiraiya even wrote an adult novel series called Icha Icha. Based on his experiences with love, the series is comical and highly successful. He is occasionally punished for his perversion. When he was younger he spied on Tsunade and was caught. She “broke both of his arms, six of his ribs, and ruptured a number of organs as punishment.” As anime perverts go, Jiraiya is by far the most complicated.
The Ryoka Invasion was a conflict between the Ryoka and Gotei 13. The Ryoka, Ichigo Kurosaki, Uryu Ishida, Yasutora Sado, Orihime Inoue, and Yoruichi Shihoin invade Soul Society to rescue Rukia. Set to be executed, Rukia’s friends caused conflict among the Gotei 13. Many of the Captains and Lieutenants lost to Ichigo and the others. Aizen who was assumed dead turned out to be a traitor. Along with Captain Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tosen, Aizen wanted to collect the Hogyoku he hid in Rukia’s body. They escape, concluding the arc. While I found the conspiracy by Aizen and the victories by the Ryoka to be implausible, this arc is what made men a Bleach fan.
If your American then you were subjected to constant reruns of the Saiyan Saga. When Dragon Ball Z finally moved on to another arc I was ecstatic. Technically the Frieza Saga only begins when the Z fighters begin fighting Frieza. I’m going to include the Namek Saga and the Captain Ginyu Saga. Together the arc makes the most sense. The Frieza Saga is almost exclusively the fight Frieza and Goku. At this point in the series, power levels still mattered. So witnessing Goku reach over 200,000 and of course Freiza’s power level of 1 million. With Gohan having his usually moments of epic rage, the humanization of Vegeta, and the first Super Saiyan, thee Frieza Saga is one of the greatest.
Pain invades Konoha searching for Naruto and the Nine-tails. Using the Asura Path, Preta Path, and Animal Path as diversions, the other three Pains interrogated villagers for info on Naruto. Unlike the battle between Jiraiya and Pain, we finally get to see all six paths in action. Without Naruto present (at least for a while) we got to see some of the other ninja fights. Kakashi, in particular, takes on the Deva Path. Konohamaru Sarutobi uses the Rasengan on the Naraka Path and the secret of the Pains is discovered. The main event, of course, is Sage Naruto vs the Six Paths. While most of the damage done to Konoha is erased by Pain, the sense of urgency going in was intense.
The Chimera Ant Queen gives birth to soldier ants waiting to bring forth the King. Feeding on humans including children, the population of the Chimera Ants grows rapidly. With the Birth of the Royal Guard and later the King the race to prepare is on. Killua and Gon train, while the King takes over the Republic of East Gorteau. This arc features a slew of battles, ending with one of the greatest anime fights ever. Coupled with the narration (in the anime) this arc is well worth the watch.
Ace is transferred to Marineford to be executed. Luffy along with the other escapees from Impel Down Arc head to Marineford to rescue Ace. In preparation for an incoming war, Marineford is evacuated. This arc was the first one where we got to see the power of Whitebeard. One of the four Yonko, Whitebeard and his massive crew arrive to liberate Ace. On the Marine side, was the 5 Shichibukai, all three Admirals, and every other justice force. Sengoku and Garp were also present. Sengoku reveals that Ace was the son of Gold Roger. The Marineford arc is heartbreaking and action-packed. The arc marks a turning point in Luffy’s life and the series as Whitebeard confirms the existence of the One Piece.
Asuka Langley Sohryu is the fourteen-year-old pilot of the Evangelion Unit-02. A child prodigy, she earned a university degree as a teenager. She even speaks several languages. Asuka has a high synchronization ratio and is an exceptional Eva pilot. However, her self confidence dwindles when she loses to the angel, Zeruel. This causes her sync ratio and effectiveness to decline. When Asuka is mentally sound she’s among the best if not the best Eva pilot. Unfortunately, in Evangelion, no one is mentally secure for long.

According to the “Hunter X Hunter Manual,” Neferpitou’s stats are 4/5 Mind, 5/5 Skill, 5/5 Body, 5/5 Nen, 5/5 Ingenuity, and 4/5 Intelligence.

She also can increase her skill and power level through training. In addition to this, she has extended youth and longevity. Android 18 also doesn’t need ” nourishment beyond water.” Android 18 is powerful enough to kick a Kamehameha from Super Saiyan Blue Goku away. Big Mom is the Captain of the Big Mom Pirates and one of the four Yonko. Big Mom ate the Soru Soru no Mi. Allowing her to “freely interact with and manipulate souls.”She was also a member of the legendary Rocks Pirates. As a member of the Yonko, she is considered to be one of the four most powerful pirates in the world. The details of how strong she is aren’t clear. In order to assess how strong she is we have to compare her to other strong characters. For example, Luffy is considered one of the strongest characters in One Piece. He barely manages to land a hit on her. All Yonko are considered on par with or stronger than Admirals. She’s also on par with Kaido, another Yonko that is considered the “strongest creature alive.” Also:
She defeated the strongest giant with one hit as a 5-year-old
One of the issues that writers face when trying to establishing a power system is how strong should your character be. It’s a balancing act. If your main character is too strong they’ll have no challenge. If they’re too weak how can they win? If you want to have a series that’s entertaining you need to carefully consider this balance. Often creators will put some limitation, weakness or even depower characters. It can be clunky or convoluted. Ultimately, the “story breaker” power hinges mostly on the story told and not just the power itself. With the in mind, what are the top 5 story breaker powers in anime and manga:
I’m leaving Saitama (One Punch Man) out because his powers are suppose to be ridiculously strong.
5. Androids 17 and 18 have infinite energy (DBZ)
The two cyborgs have “infinite energy reactors” the give them limitless stamina. Furthermore they don’t age normally and can increase their strength through training. Furthermore they don’t use ki, making it impossible to detect them through normal means. The pair often let their opponents tire themselves out before defeating them.
4. Trafalgar Law’s Devil Fruit Ability (One Piece)
Law’s Room ability allows him to “control anything inside the sphere’s he creates.” He can “cut people to bits and rearrange them as he likes with the person still alive, swap around people and objects instantly, cut through whatever he wants including armored Haki and whole mountains, rip out organs, swap souls, and inflict an unhealing wound.” Law’s devil fruit drains his stamina, but it’s often to powerful to counter.
3. All For One (My Hero Academia)
All For One’s Quirk can “take, steal, mix, give, amplify and force others to use their quirks.” It’s suggested that he’s also immortal. While he can be defeated (Only All Might) he survives. All For One has it’s a weakness but they are mostly indirect. If he gives someone a quirk they may not be able to handle the power of becoming a mindless doll. The effectiveness of the quirk depends on the user. He can’t steal One For All, as it “can only be passed on if the present wielder wills it.”
2. Yhwach the Almighty (Bleach)
The King of the Quincies, Yhwach possesses “all Quincy powers, as well as the ability to give people power by lending them pieces of his soul.” He can “call back the soul shards at will, depriving the recipient of their power and life, to increase his strength.” He is able to steal the ” life and power from both Quincies and their enemies.” This power also allows him to choose who lives and dies. He also has a “Schrift ability,” the Almighty. This ability allows him “to change the entire future.” He can see and alter ALL possible futures. It should be noted that Beach has a number of broken characters and it takes three of them to kill Yhwach (Ichigo, Aizen, and Uryuu).
1. Madara (Naruto)

Meliodas is the “Sin of Wrath” of the Seven Deadly Sins, faces off against the Ten Commandments. The title character Meliodas fights all ten of the commandments. Derieri, Drole, Estarossa, Fraudrin, Gloxinia, Grayroad, Melascula, Monspeet, Zeldris.

6. Luffy vs Katakuri
Monkey D. Luffy and Charlotte Katakuri face off during the Whole Cake Island Arc in the Mirror World. This fight was a long one and largely saw Katakuri dominate Luffy. This is why the result of the match, Luffy’s win feels strange and unnecessary. One of One Piece’s most distinguish qualities is that the “main character” in this case Luffy doesn’t have to always win. Even in a later “fight” against Kiado, Luffy is easily defeated. So why did he win this fight?
Some fans wrongly suggested that this was typical plot armor, it wasn’t. However, I agree Luffy should have taken the lost on this. Regardless, we see Luffy reach another level as he introduces us to another form, Gear Fourth: Snakeman. The fight might be too repetitive and the victory was the wrong one. Regardless, it’s worth your time.

Undeterred, Netero continues to attack. This time he loses his left arm. Netero simply prays with his one hand. The 100-type Guanyin Bodhisattva appears behind Meruem as he uses his “zero hand.” After the attack, the underground tomb is destroyed and Netero ages. Meruem is somewhat damaged, but not nearly enough to die. Netero, however, is near death. He sticks two fingers in his chest, activating a nuclear bomb.
