Masashi Kishimoto’s, Samurai 8 to be released this Spring

In December of last year, at Shonen Jump’s Jump Festa the follow up to Naruto was announced. Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru, will be written by Masashi Kishimoto and illustrated by Akira Okubo, a former assistant on Naruto and the brother of Atsushi Okubo (Soul Eater, Fire Force). Kishimoto stated that he ” I like Japanese-styled things: I’m thrilled about the culture and decor. I like sci-fi things too. I’m excited for this gimmick and it’s creation. Since I like both things, I’ve decided to mix them together to depict this work.” He hopes to make it “even more interesting than the Naruto series!”

Naruto, Vol. 1: Uzumaki Naruto

Unlike Naruto, Samurai 8 will obviously focus on samurai instead of ninja. Similar to the Naruto series it will be more than a samurai series like Rurouni Kenshin. Infused with sci-fi, the series will feature cyborgs, futuristic weapons and outer space. While I didn’t like Boruto, I have high hopes for this series. The problem, so will millions of Naruto fans. The high expectations could be a curse for the series or help it have an instant audience. Another problem is appetite for another shonen series. With series like Black Clover and My Hero Academia doing well, not to mention One Piece is still king, will there be room for one more?

From what little that’s been seen so far, I like the direction the series is expected to take. More importantly to me I like the art style. What do you think. Will Samurai 8 live up to the hype? Will it be successful as the current shonen series? Can it surpass Naruto?

Samurai 8 will run in Shonen Jump later this year.

The Problems I have with Boruto

From Boruto Chapter 31

I have to admit I’m not sure I even like Boruto. The manga series is certainly better than the anime, but I find that neither comes close to the Naruto series, even if Masashi Kishimoto is the editor of the manga. The monthly schedule doesn’t help, but I do like the art style. One of the main problems is the feeling of growth. What I mean by that is all the characters seem to have S Rank abilities already. I makes the series feel rushed.

Take the BIG three of the series. Boruto Uzumaki, Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki. Heirs of the vaunted, Legendary Three Ninja, Jiraiya, Oorochimaru and Tsunade and Team 7, Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha and Uzumaki Naruto. While it true that the 3 Sannin and Team 7 were exceptional, the most recent generation seem even better.

Unlike his father, Boruto is the child of two powerful bloodlines, Hyuga and Uzumaki. He’s also a prodigy. Sarada is an elite genin, having inherited the Sharingan and her mothers chakra control and strength. Then there’s Mitsuki, the “son” of Oorochimaru. He was created by Oorochimaru to be genetically perfect and has the “potentially more powerful than the Sannin himself.”

Boruto has a unique Dojutsu that grants him similar abilities to the Byakugan. He also mastered the Rasengan with wind nature transformation added to it before finishing the ninja academy. It took his father a great deal of training and effort to do the same. Sarada learned how to use collect chakra into her fist, giving her tremendous strength comparable to her mother or Tsunade. She has had no training in this regard. Did she just guess how to do it? Mitsuki has Senjutsu, something that Jiraiya failed to master and took (okay a few weeks) for Naruto to.

Maybe, they have to give this generation a boost since they are competing with ninja tech now. Which basically makes my previous complaint moot, since you can buy ninja abilities. The ninja tech undermines ninjas period. Normal people can use jutsu now. I don’t feel that anything jutsu has been earned in this series. Sure you should expect the main characters to be the best, but it feels unmerited.

So what do you think. I am off base here? Do you agree? Have you ever read or watched Boruto? What am I missing ?

My Pirate Crew Tag

First I would like to thank Merlin Musings for tagging me. I’ve seen this tag around for a while and was wonder if someone would tag me. Lynn Sheridan is credited with creating this tag. The tag is inspired of course by One Piece. Regardless, Let’s get to my crew:

The Rules

  1. Display the My Pirate Crew logo and add ‘My Pirate Crew’ as a tag.
  2. Thank the blogger who nominated you and post a link to their blog.
  3. Link back to the original post here (so I can compare your crews to mine).
  4. Select seven anime characters and give them a position on the crew. These are the positions you can to fill. Warrior, sniper, chef, doctor, scientist, navigator, strategist, mechanic, entertainer.
  5. Nominate 5-10 bloggers.
  6. Set sail and rule the seas!

My Crew

The Navigator – Hyuga Neji

Neji is a member of the Hyuga clan. As a prodigy, Neji is highly intelligent. The reason I have chose him for my navigator is simple, the Byakugan. The Byakugan grants the user a ” near 360º diameter field of vision” and the ability to see over 20 kilometers away, along with vision that can “can penetrate through any solid objects or obstructions.” I think this ability makes him a perfect navigator.

The Chef – Brock

Brock from Pokemon is the former Pewter City Gym Leader. The eldest of nine children, which his absentee father left him in the care of, Brock is known for his domestic abilities. He’s a caretaker at heart, good at sewing, cleaning and of course cooking. He’s also capable of creating food for animals, which could be helpful.

The Entertainer – Mako Mankanshoku

Mako is hyperactive, fearless, silly and funny. She also manages to be lazy with all that energy that result in a clash of personality traits. Mako was the primary source of humor in the Kill la Kill. She can also be quite dramatic and interrupt moments of seriousness.

The Mechanic – Duo Maxwell

Duo is the pilot of the XXXG-01 Gundam Deathscythe. Duo is an expert at communication and computer based work. As a member of the Sweeper Group, Duo loved “tinker with scrap metal and junk computer bits.” His talent is undeniable.

The Sniper – Yoko Littner

Yoko is a member of Team Dai-Gurren in the anime Gurren Lagann. She’s often armed with a range of firearms including a “long range sniper rifle.” She’s a skilled marksman with her rifle, able to hit weak spots from large distances. She has also shown the ability to hit moving targets during high conflict battles.

The Strategists – Shikamaru Nara

Shikamaru has an IQ of over 200. He’s able to quickly calculate the limits of his opponents and his allies to create or determine complicated strategies. He’s able to keep track of the location of everyone relative to everything else. He studies behavior of enemies, Shikamaru is able to think ten moves ahead of his opponents.

The Doctor – Sakura Haruno

Sakura has been blessed with Chakra control that has seen her acquire massive strength and Medical Ninjutsu. Sakura is able to heal almost any injury. Sakura’s proficiency in medical ninjutsu is extremely rare. She can extract poisons, as well perform surgeries without a instruments. She’s also able to create poison antidotes effortlessly. Her medical skills ” extends to more standard medicine as well, enabling her to perform autopsies and examine cells with a knowledge of genetics.” She’s even created her own Military Rations Pills.

The Scientists – Kisuke Urahara

Kisuke is a former Captain of the 12th Division. He’s also the founder and first President of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute (S.R.D.I). Kisuke has developed many inventions, is able to equipment such as his “holographic computer interface.” He responsible for creating the most “amazing” thing in Soul Society. He has managed to create new inventions quickly. He’s a highly capable chemist and medic.

The Warrior – Broly

I’m choosing the new Broly, as the original one was a bit insane. Regardless, Broly is a saiyan with near limitless power. As a member of the saiyan race he’s a born warrior. They aim to become the strongest in the universe, they’re built for fighting. Most notable when a saiyan survives a near death experience they grow even stronger. Broly is the ultimate warrior.

My Top 5 anime water users

One of my goals for 2019 is to add more varied content to my blog. List have been popular for a while and of course they’re simple and easy posts to create. First I decided to make some rules:

  1. I’m only going to include anime characters from anime/manga I’ve read or watched. Mainly because I would be familiar with their powers.
  2. I’m only going to include ONE character per series. This is difficult to do, because there are many strong characters in any given series, but I want some variety.
  3. I think it will be difficult to determine how each character on the list would fare against each other, so I going to focus how strong they are within their series. However, I will be thinking how they compare relative to each other.

[Note] This list and any others will focus on characters that MOSTLY or significantly use the element. In this case water. What that would result in is having a list of characters that will have more that just the element in their abilities and I will be factoring these other abilities in as well.

Primal Kyogre

5. Kyogre (Pokemon)

Kyogre is a Water-type legendary Pokemon that was introduced during the third Generation of the Pokemon series. A massive Pokemon modeled after a whale. Kyogre possessed the ability to “expand the oceans” and has control over water and rain. Kyogre is a part of the “weather trio” along with Groudon and Rayquaza.

Kyogre was given a power up during the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games. Called “Primal Reversion,” a Pokemon undergoes a transformation “restore a Pokemon’s true powers as the Pokémon absorbs the energy of nature to greatly increase its power.” Like most legendary Pokemon, Kyogre is capable of using many different types of TM’s. It has a powerful signature move called Origin Pulse. The move shoots multiple orbs and fire energy beams.

Why is Kyogre on this 5th on this list?

Despite his worldwide weather effects, Kyogre is largely limited in it’s ability. Very passive in nature Kyogre isn’t much of a fighter to begin with and it only really has one significant move, Origin Pulse.

Harribel vs Hitsugaya (Full Fight)

4. Tier Harribel (Bleach)

Harribel is the former 3rd Espada in Aizen’s army. She eventually becomes the ruler of Hueco Mundo. Like most Espada, Harribel has tremendous skill with a sword. She’s capable of holding her own against a captain-level Shinigami like Hitsugaya. She was even able to hold off a captain and two lieutenant-level Visored together.

She possessed incredible spiritual power and was highly perceptive during combat. Tier was considered to be a master tactician. Her hierro “harden skin” was strong enough to survive Hitsugaya’s attacks without much damage. She also has abilities typical to most Espada like Cero, Sonido and Descorrer.

When Harribel uses her Resurreccion, she releases her special ability. With her new abilities she is able to manipulate water. Her best water techniques are:

  • Hirviendo – Pointing her blade out, Harribel boils any form of water which comes close to it, including ice, and deflects it around her.
  • La Gota – Harribel can condense large amounts of water around her blade before firing it as a blast which resembles a shark tooth. She can fire multiple blasts in rapid succession with relative ease. The blasts strike with enough force to demolish houses.
  • Cascada – Harribel launches a rushing surge of water at her enemy. The torrent of water is large enough to cover several town blocks.

Why is Tier Harribel 4th on this list?

I my opinion Harribel is a far superior fighting tactician than the passive Kyogre. She has a larger variety of techniques as well. However, most of her abilities are shared with other Espada and she only has a handful of unique techniques.

Juvia vs Meredy

3. Juvia Lockser (Fairy Tail)

Juvia is a S-Class Mage from the Fairy Tail Guild. She can produce, control and manipulate water. She has a variety of different ways she can produce water, for example she can produce water blades that are strong enough to slice through rock or metal. She can also turn herself into water, allowing physical and magical attack pass through her without damaging her. Some of her best techniques are:

  • Water Lock – Juvia has the ability to materialize a large circular mass of water, and unlike the Water Dome, it contains no oxygen inside. This spell is used to capture enemies and incapacitate them by suffocation.
  • Sierra – A full body transformation resembling Water Body, used by Juvia in a state of strong agitation or other influencing emotion (e.g. jealousy or rage). Her strong emotions cause her full body transformation to heat up/boil. This is a short ranged attack which displays enormous, unpredictable speed.
  • Water-Make – a form of Molding Magic that lets Juvia create, or at the very least manipulate existing water. The scope of usage is not limited to just pure water, but also to things that contain it in large quantities, such as blood.

Why is Juvia 3rd on this list?

I didn’t list all the techniques she possess, her variety is far superior to Kyogre and Tier. While Kyogre can influence the seas, Juvia has more direct control over it. Unlike, Tier, Juvia can even turn herself into water and has defensive water abilities as well.

Only a small sample of his power

2. Tobirama Senju (Naruto)

Tobirama was considered one of the most powerful shinobi ever. He was considered the “fastest shinobi,” at least during his time. His chakra control was such that he could use difficult techniques with just one hand seal. Like most ninja, Tobirama had a large number of sill sets, from summoning techniques, barrier ninjutsu to the Shadow Clone Technique.

Tobirama was an “adept sensor.” He could “accurately detect the presence and location of targets in the surrounding area. He could even sense persons countries away, identify a target’s ancestry from their chakra signature, and even pinpoint a target’s exact location while blinded,” simply by touching his finger to the ground.

While, he could use all nature transformations he mastered Water Release. He could create large amounts of water without a water source. He could use high level water jutsu at any time. He could shoot high pressure water beams that could slice through his targets, create walls of water and cover an entire battlefield with water. Some of his best techniques were:

  • Flying Thunder God Technique – he could instantly teleport himself and/or other targets to any location marked with his seal.
  • Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation – which revives the dead into immortal, regenerating bodies.
  • Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags – to take advantage of the revived bodies’ natural advantages, using them in kamikaze-like attacks to create near-infinite chains of explosions on a target. He was said to use it whenever he needed to clear a map.

Why is Tobirama 2nd on this list?

To be honest Juvia has superior water abilities than Tobirama. What puts him ahead of her is his other abilities, Space-Time ninjutsu Flying Thunder God Technique is a powerful S-Rank technique. He has a number of techniques that surpass Juvia’s.

Jinbe vs Big Mom

1. Jinbe (One Piece)

Jinbe was the second captain of the Sun Pirates. A former Shichibukai he possessed massive strength. He is so far the strongest fishman seen in the One Piece series. Despite his large size he move quite fast as well. Jinbe also has impressive endurance, able to take a “baptizing” in boiling water.

He was able to hold his own against Big Mom, he even took a direct sword attack from her. While in water he becomes even more powerful, he an excellent swimmer and he’s able to “suppress” any fear he may have. He has mastered Fish-Man Karate, he’s a great strategists, he can communicate with fish life and has become skilled in Haki. His most powerful abilities are:

  • Fish-Man Karate – According to Jinbe, the secret of Fish-Man Karate is mastery of the water in the user’s direct vicinity, using its power to send powerful waves impacting the water within the opponent’s body. Because every creature has a high percentage of water in their body, the users of Fish-Man Karate are able to battle opponents that are usually highly resistant (if not immune) against blows and punches.
  • Busoshoku Haki – is a form of Haki that allows the user to use their spirit to create, in essence, an invisible armor around themselves.
  • Buraikan – A secret technique of the Fish-Man Karate. Jinbe concentrates in one hand a large amount of water that he shoots at close range against his opponent. The impact is so strong that the water penetrates the opponent’s body and gets out from the other end.
  • Gyojin Jiujitsu: Water Heart – Jinbe plunges into the sea. Using a jujitsu technique (unarmed martial art that originates in the bushi battle methods), Jinbe centralizes in both hands an enormous amount of water, to then transfer it to the surface.

Why is Jinbe on the top of the list?

Simply put he possess all the qualities of the previous four. He has great water techniques, intelligence, physical strength, speed, varied types of techniques and he is able to do battle in water, under water and on land.

So do you agree? Is someone too high or too low? Think I should do more lists? What kind. Let me know what you think.

The Salty Anime Challenge Day 20: What is an anime argument that you absolutely hate hearing?

Sakura Haruno is useless

Sakura Haruno or Sakura Uchiha is one of the most hated anime characters. Being in a shonen series that focuses on battle, Sakura is “useless” in battle early in the series. However, in Naruto strength isn’t the only thing that matters (at least early in the series). In Part 1 of the series Sakura’s physical prowess is limited. Sakura’s particular talent that surpassed even Sasuke and of course Naruto was her intellect and her chakra control. During the Chunin exams Sakura is smart enough to both realize that the ten questions are too difficult for most genin’s and answer them.

During the second stage of the Chunin exam, after Oorochimaru gives Sasuke the curse mark, she watches Naruto and Sasuke all night as they’re lie unconscious. She valiantly tries to save her teammates despite being clearly over powered and out numbered. Obviously, Rock Lee aids her, and later team 10, but if Sakura had more power I think critics would have cheered her more. In anime, many fans only seem to value power with courage, not power without it. For this reason Sakura’s attempt to save her teammates goes unappreciated.

In Part 2, Sakura really begins to show her skills. While, the characters in Naruto become better Sakura’s is arguably the most improved (Ino maybe close). She and Naruto face off against Kakashi in another bell test. During this test Sakura first shows her massive strength when she uses her Cherry Blossom Impact. A skill that makes use of her chakra control to devastating effect. When she and the rest of team 7 arrive to Suna when Gaara is kidnapped, she is quickly able to remove the poison found in Kankuro, heal him and create an antidote, which no Sand ninja was able to do.

Sakura’s best presentation of her fighting prowess is her battle with Chiyo against Sasori. Chiyo initially takes the lead in this fight using Sakura as a human puppet, making great use of her super strength. This method continues to prove effective once Sasori uses the third Kazekage’s iron sand ability. However, with Chiyo being one armed her effectiveness as a puppeteer is decreased. During this battle Chiyo notes that Sakura is able to “see through the attack patterns of Sasori,” she is able to deduce the pattern of his fingers and hands.

Even Sasori is impressed with her ability to both fight against him and create an antidote for his complicated poison. Finally, Sakura during the Fourth Shinobi World War is an important medic keeping the allied forces alive. Sakura uses the “Strength of a Hundred Seal,” she spent three years storing chakra a feat that is difficult due to the level of chakra control required. When Naruto is in danger of death, it’s Sakura that saves his life. When her medical ninjutsu fails, she “makes an incision in Naruto’s chest and manually pumps his heart to keep him alive while pleading for him to live because he is close to achieving his dream.” Ask yourself, What would happen if Naruto had died?

Look, Sakura isn’t without her flaws. She was pretty annoying in the beginning of the series, and she treated both Naruto and Rock Lee poorly. While, she was completely useless during battle, she was helpful intellectually and displayed courage. I found her love of Sasuke, who was abusive and tried to KILL her TWICE was ridiculous. However, if you hold that against her keep in mind that Naruto is just as bad in this regard. Her value was never in battle anyway. While it’s undeniable that a in Shonen series, battles are the most important, so Sakura was inherently going to become a secondary character.

Many Sakura haters compare her power to Sasuke and Naruto, they ignore the fact that unlike, Sasuke born with the privilege of having a Sharingan and the curse seal and Naruto given half the Nine-tails chakra as an infant, She was given none of these advantages, but mastered difficult medial ninjutsu and saved many lives. A lot of people seemed to believe that Sakura’s abilities are somehow unearned because we didn’t get to see all her training.

However, we don’t see most of Sasuke’s training or even Naruto’s during the time skip. I think this is mostly a negative bias. Sakura’s transformation from the beginning of the series, both personality wise and ability wise changed more than anyone and she had to work with less than her teammates. She was important to keep the alliance alive during the war. She should be lauded, not decried.

The Salty Anime Challenge Day 10: What is something that you dislike about a show you love?

The Naruto series abandoning more sophisticated fighting style.

Naruto is one of my favorite series of all time. While the fillers in this series got annoying that’s actually not my biggest issue. At the beginning of the series Naruto and Sasuke were the main characters but other characters like Rock Lee, Gaara and Neji were prominent both in importance and in skill. Sure Sasuke with the Sharingan and Naruto with the Kyuubi Chakra had significant advantages over the competition, the skill level of many of the other fighters were actually superior.

I’m not suggesting that Naruto and Sasuke shouldn’t eventually have surpassed their peers but that by the end of the series they were the only ones that were really relevant. Most importantly, the series abandoned the more strategic and complex battle style that made me love it in the beginning. For example, the Chuunin exam showcased the analytical ability of the genin. The emphasis on logic in addition to strength made the series the most superior in terms of fighting.

There was also a sense of limits. With clans certain skills we limited to those clans and couldn’t be learned by anyone else or at least not easily. The Kekkei Genkai literally limited abilities to genetics, but at the end of the series the only clan that really mattered was the Uchiha. Eventually, the fighting went from strategy, analyzing and being cunning to pull meteorites from the skies or perform interstellar travel, control dimensions. I’m not opposed to large scale abilities but it no longer became about logic and reason when your opponent can travel through space and time.

Boruto Chapter 16 Review: Vessel

New villains are introduced

We are introduced to a new threat in the form of a group called Kara. They mention contingency plans regarding the lost of their “vessel.” They bicker back and forth over what to do next and conclude that they need to “retrieve the vessel at all costs.” After they disperse, the eldest member of Kara is killed, by another, with the “true flames of samadhi.”

Compared to Naruto’s Akatsuki, the revealing of Kara was quick. Boruto seems to be avoiding the slower burn of that series. However, none of the genin in Boruto seem strong enough to defeat any of them. I predict that this is just an introduction of Kara and they will disappear for a while as the genin gain enough strength to face them.

Naruto vs Boruto

Naruto faces-off against Boruto in front of a crowd, Boruto starts of with several shadow clones, aimed to distract Naruto and get behind him. Boruto throws a rasengan at Naruto, it appears that he absorbs the rasengan. Boruto then uses, Water Style: Billowing Wave in combination with Thunderclap Arrow, Naruto responds by using Earth Style: Flowing earth wall, blocking his attack.

Naruto then punches his fist through the wall and absorbs Boruto’s attack. He then appears behind Boruto without the hand, attacking Boruto, knocking him to the ground ending the duel. At the offices of the Hokage, Boruto berates Naruto for using ninja tech. The tech is designed to emulate the ability of Ootsutsuki, absorbing attack, however, without the ability to release the jutsu. Sasuke states that it’s not cheating, and what matters is how you use the tech. Finally, Konohamaru investigates a wreckage and is in danger from an unknown assailant.

Boruto makes a new friend in Tento

In the 11th chapter of the Boruto manga series, Boruto is the bodyguard to the son of the diamyo, Tento. I was a ready to hate him, as he was initially introduced as a clique snobby rich kid. He does flex his financial power by first renting out the entire hotel. He quickly pivots to how he loves ninja’s and wants to see ninjutsu. Boruto shows him the Shadow Clone jutsu, Tento gives him a backhanded compliment, suggesting that Naruto is able to produce thousands.

Tento shows Boruto his card collection amazing him with it’s quality. Boruto notices that Tento has a very rare card in his collection. Tento tells Boruto that he can have it, because he has duplicates. Boruto declines, stating that he will earn his own cards. Boruto and Tento bond during a shruikenjutsu training and Tento tells him that he hopes that his father will notice him if he became a ninja. Eventually, Tento is successful in hitting the target, Boruto and Tento become friends and plan to see each other again. Meanwhile, a member of the Mujina Bandits is watching and communicates with his boss Shojoji who’s disguised as Yamaoka

I’ll admit that I was surprised how Tento turned out. I was ready to hate him for being a rich brat. While he did originally behave that way, he turned out to be more complex character than that. Father issues is clearly going to be the main theme of this series, like being parent-less was in Naruto (Naruto, Sasuke and Gaara). Overall, I like this chapter and look forward to the next one.

PLAYSTATION NETWORK CARD 10 USD

The next Naruto series Boruto begins

A few weeks ago Naruto the long running anime series finally ended with the 500th episode. Boruto Uzumaki the title of the first episode of the spin off series, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, will focus on the son of Naruto as he goes on his adventure in the ninja world. The episode begins much like the manga, with Boruto facing off against a currently unknown villian, Kawaki, as he announces the death of shinobi. He also alludes to killing Naruto, although it’s not clear.

Boruto is similar to his father in a lot of ways, his delinquency and other bad behavior. However, unlike Naruto he does have a father and mother. Boruto is resentful of his father being busy all the time. Like his father Boruto has no interest in school and prefers to have fun. Despite the differences between Naruto and Boruto, there are key similarities. Obviously, they look alike, but they share the desire to save people. Boruto rescues Denki from a group of bullies in an alley. Denki is the child of the head of the “Kaminarimon Corporation, the Leaf’s foremost electronics company.”

His father is the overbearing, wanting Denki to become a ninja. Denki is possessed by a dark force that seems to compels him into punishing his bullies. He plots to murder them by leaving them to die in a train crash. Boruto interferes with his plan, convincing him to “make his own decisions.” Together, Boruto, Denki and the bullies survive and Boruto arrives at the ceremony in a dramatic fashion, crashing the rail car into the monument to the Hokage.

Not much of note occurred in this episode, but it will be interesting what the differences between this series and the original. The series seems to hint that we will get to see Boruto and his classmates go through the ninja curriculum. I hope that the series will focus not just on Boruto, but the other genin as well. I also hope that the complex battles that were the hallmark of the Naruto series, but it became only about Naruto ans Sasuke. This new series feels like its going to go on for a while and hope it will take the best of Naruto series and add more.
