Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 03

In Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 3, Village of the Hollows, Riko, Nanachi, and Reg follow Majikaja up some stairs. Nanachi explains that “the force field is not present,” so the curse is no threat to them currently. However, the creatures in the village begin to follow the trio, so Nanachi warns Reg. She’s unsure if the creatures are Narehate due to their intelligence. Majikaja leads them to “the jeweler” who’s chipping away at Prushka. However, the jeweler is improving the white whistle, according to Majikaja, the stone hasn’t “assumed its intended form as an instrument.” He takes them to the market.

Riko finds pages from her mothers notes, she wants to buy them but must “exchange something of value.” Majikaja tells her that her body is valuable and she could consider selling her body parts. This is an alarming revelation. I except in the future Riko will be threatened by one of the Narehate that wants a piece of her valuable body, even though Majikaja claims “stealing value is the gravest sin,” I’d imagine that someone will break that rule. However, knowing Riko and this series, she might sell parts of herself for information like her mothers notes.

Narehate being torn apart for harming Meinya.

The price of damaging value

In typical Made in Abyss body horror, Meinya is squeezed so hard by a Narehate that it’s intestines pop out. Meinya is a highly durable creature that is a routinely used as a source of the series body horror. The trio witness what is called the “balancing,” or as Majikaja frames it “the price for damaging a value that belonged to someone else.” During the balancing dark shapes remove value from the offending Narehate. The Narehate closely value their belonging so to have them forcibly removed seems to have an emotion cost. The process is also brutal, as the Narehate’s skin is “torn open.” Majikaja notes that anything that happens “outside the village” cannot be rectified by the village.

Riko is compensated for her lost but feels weird about accepting it. Regardless, she uses the compensation to buy food and lodging. The questionable food makes her sick. Nanachi and Reg try to find medicine for her but are interrupted by a loud sound. Majikaja says that it signals the arrival of “the embodiment of value,” Faputa. Reg heads off to find Faputa. The Narehate princess, Faputa, rides on the shoulder of a giant robot. Made in Abyss introduces the value culture of the Narehate. Considering that they were once humans who lost the original forms valuing the human body seems to make sense. However, the culture is rather toxic and I suspect it will only get worse.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 02

In the second episode of Made in Abyss Season 2, Capital of the Unreturned our trio, Nanachi, Riko, and Reg, explore the sixth layer and find themselves being watched. They encounter some new beasts. The Mizoujack is a frog like creature that are considered “docile.” According to Lyza’s notebook their ” freshly laid eggs are good,” on of the main themes of Made in Abyss is survival. Not just for the humans but all the living creatures in the universe. It’s important to know which beast is prey and which is predatory. The environment is a part of everything’s survival.

Along with the bathroom humor (and realism) Made in Abyss uses food to illustrate how difficult life in the abyss is. The source of the food can be gross but it seems like Riko can always make them edible. Taking her mothers advice Riko and the others eat the eggs of the Mizoujacks. The eggs are round, spiral shaped, and light purple. After boiling them and killing the larva, they continued to move even after Riko fried them. Riko considers her friends at the higher level and she and Nanachi both write letters. They design a vessel to carry them to the surface but it’s comically snatch from the sky by flying creature.

Prushka’s stolen

After making camp Nanachi, Riko, and Reg awaken to find someone has entered their cave despite Reg’s trap, and Nanachi’s ability to read force fields. Regardless, whomever or whatever has stolen Riko’s white whistle, Prushka. With Reg’s keen senses the trio is able to track down a village. Along the way the locate a disturbing sight, two dead creatures with hairs from Riko and Nanachi stuffed in their anuses. A mysterious figure follows them watching as the reach the village. Once inside they encounter a number of creatures. One attempts to communicated with them. Majikaja as it’s called, looks to be stitched into a robot made of various materials.

It’s language is clumsy but sufficient to talk to Riko. Majikaja gave me an instant sense of dread. Knowing this series something terrible happened to it and yet I’m curious what occurred and what Majikaja actually looks like. Anyway, it tells them that “a specialist is working on the stone,” and they should “follow”. Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 2 is well paced, further exploring the most dangerous layer, while introducing us to new creatures, environments, and dangers.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 01

The Compass pointed to the Darkness is the first episode of Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the second season opens with a young Vueko looking at the Star Compass while remembering her sexually abusive foster father. He discovered the compass on a burnt ship. There he and his companions witnesses a horrible scene. A “smoldering corpse” and body that was split in two, and an old traumatized man. Through tears the old man tells him the “golden city is inside the giant man-eating pit.” Made in Abyss instantly reminds you of the misery the world holds. Vueko inherited the compass and trains to be a Delver. She joins a Ganja group lead by Wazukyan and becomes one of the Three Sages.

We are introduced to a few more new characters, Belaf another of the Three Sages. He tries to encourage Vueko to be more confident. The following night they endure a storm and find the island where the golden city is located. As they venture forth they encounter people living on the island. Belaf can communicate with them. A old man offers to help them if Vueko gives him the compass. She gives it to him without much fuss. According to the natives the Golden City or “The Capital of the Unreturned,” is real. Once you enter you can never return.

The Cursed Pit

The Ganja’s crew are warned that if the enter the pit they will suffer from it’s “curse.” They ignore the warning a continue. When Vueko enters the Altar of the Absolute Boundary, a elevator that connects the 5th layer to the 6th, the episode switches to the perspective of Riko, Reg, and Nanachi. When Riko rubs her whistle the elevator begins to descend. The pass a massive sea creature and the layer of bones and corpses. The altar lands in the 6th layer, in the ruins of the golden city. The second season appears like it will follow the Ganja group as they travel through the city then transition to Riko and her group. The appears to be a great deal of time between the Ganja’s journey and Riko’s.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 01, Riko and her crew arrive at the 6th layer of the abyss.
Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 01, Riko and her crew arrive at the 6th layer of the abyss.

If this is accurate then the differences in the groups abilities to adapt to the dangers of the 6th layer will be compared. Riko’s group likely has more advanced knowledge of the world and will be more prepared. Considering the size of Ganja’s group I fully expect most of their crew to meet terrible deaths. However, in this series death isn’t the worst thing that can happen to you. I wonder what horrors Made in Abyss has in store for us and the two crews. If the first season was any indication even our main characters aren’t safe from the consequences while exploring the Abyss.
