Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 12

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 12 ends the village arc, as Faputa gets revenge for her mother and completes her purpose. Faputa lets out a powerful scream resulting in Juroimoh appearing next to her. Faputa commands Juroimoh to “drive” the wild creatures away. In a flashback, we see when Faputa meet Gaburoon, when she invaded Rika’s, Reg’s, and Nanachi’s campsite, and stole Prushka from Rika. She notes that “Rika has a weird soul,” and wonders where she got it. In the present, Rika awakens to see Maaa and the other Narehate. She’s happy to see Nanachi and Reg are with her. Moogie tells her that they have resign themselves to their fate.

They encounter Wazukyan. Dying, the Sage asks Rika if “she’s glad she came.” Rika lights up, telling him that she never could have imagined the village and all the Narehate she’s meet. This scene reminds us that Rika’s goal is to experience new this and she remains as excited as ever. I wonder if she’ll ever lose that enthusiasm in the future. Made in Abyss is a harsh series and I’m certain Rika and the others will suffer more in the future. Nanachi asks Wazukyan what his goal was and he responds that “they wanted to become something beyond human.” He says in order to explore the Abyss one must “surpass being human.” He encourages them to “realize their dreams,” and withers away.

Faputa completes her purpose

Faputa screams again. Calling the other Narehate to come to her. Meanwhile, Vueko begins to lose her humanity as the boundary begins to vanish. It’s a gruesome scene as her skin starts to melt away and she starts to turn into a hollow. She collapse in a pool of blood but she’s rescued by Pakkoyan who disappears due to the curse. Nanachi finds Vueko. As Faputa prepares to reengage in battle, Reg appears. He apologizes to her and tells her to go talk to the Narehate. With the help of Rika and her White Whistle, Reg powers up and fight two Turbinid-Dragons himself.

Faputa confronts the remaining Narehate. She tells them she won’t forgive but she will give them all “roles to play.” She begins to destroy the village. While doing so she tells Maaa and Majikaja to take the trio outside the village. As she falls Reg rescues her. Rika gives Maaa an unfinished doll and Majikaja breaks down. Unable to move Majikaja feeds itself to a passed out Faputa. Sadly Maaa disappears as the trio get outside the village and Vueko dies. Faputa gives her a proper burial. Reg asks Faputa to join them, she says “she think about it.” Personally I hope she joins, she’s pretty cool, and the team could use her power. I’m sad to see Maaa go but glad it didn’t ripped to pieces, and got to “die” peacefully. Made in Abyss continues to be an interesting, heartbreaking and depressing series. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long for the next season.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 11

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 11 opens with Faputa knocking out Reg. She demands Riko pay for “Reg having forgotten about her,” and goes on a rampage. The villagers try and fail to protect Riko. Faputa is simply too fast. However, before she can reach Riko, Gaburoon blocks her causing damage to itself. Shocked, Faputa demands to know why. Gaburoon tells her “she would have lost Reg forever.” Gaburoon is correct of course. Whatever Reg’s history with Faputa is, he’s now enthralled with Riko and would have hated Faputa forever. Gaburoon did protect the relationship Faputa has with Reg, even if she doesn’t know it.

Faputa is a tragic figure. Her entire existence has been a tool for revenge. Faputa’s begins to fall apart mentally as she realizes her place in the world. Suddenly, she’s knocked back by Nanachi, with Belaf in tow. Nanachi tells Riko that she’ll handle Faputa and Belaf “attacks,” sort of. Belaf goal isn’t to harm Faputa but to “gift” her memories of the Ganja’s past. Enraged, Faputa attacks Belaf, tearing him to pieces and killing Belaf by shattering Belaf’s head. Belaf dies, hoping Faputa will find “her own value.” As I mentioned in previous reviews, the Narehate focus on value.

Faputa, rise . . . embodiment of value

They hold Faputa as the one with the most value but she doesn’t think she even has any. After Faputa receives the memories her mindset deteriorate further. Nanachi tells Riko to escape with some of the villagers, while she wonders what Wazukyan is after. Faputa tries to reassure herself that she remains the “fire that will burn everything to cinders.” Due to Reg the villages barrier is gone and creatures begin invading the village, killing some of the Narehate. This scene is Made in Abyss at it’s best. Adorable Narehate being mauled and ripped to pieces by the violent creatures of the sixth layer.

It’s both a sad and unsetting moment. Faputa isn’t happy to witness the carnage. She’s upset that the creatures are killing her prey. She accuses them of “stealing her reason for being,” and begins attacking them. However, the creatures hold their own. Ripping the flesh off of Faputa leaving visible bone and even tearing out entrails. Faputa loses bits and pieces of herself (literally) as she becomes overwhelmed by the increasingly hostile creatures. Gaburoon sacrifices itself to protect Faputa but it doesn’t matter. She’s rendered immobile and prepares for death. Suddenly, the Narehate begin feeding pieces of themselves to Faputa.

Faputa’s understanding of the world or her lack of understanding becomes clear. Everyone she held dear, Gaburoon, Reg, and her mother were more than she could comprehend. The embodiment of value, Faputa, rises again with new purpose. Determined to find her value by herself.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 10

At the end of Made in Abyss Episode 09, Juroimoh and Reg’s fight cause damage to the village, leaving a hole which Faputa enter, finally ready to seek her revenge. In episode 10, All That You Gather, Belaf frees Nanachi from his ownership. He gives Nanachi his memories (his value) but warns her that if Nanachi leaves the village with Mitty “she will cease to exist,” because “every being that was created in the village can only exist in it, and will stop existing if taken outside it.” Nanachi decides that Mitty should be set free. Nanachi heads towards the barrier and Mitty disappears. Belaf and the other Narehate from it’s house all fade away as they reach the the end of the barrier. Belaf monologues that “whether it be despair or joy, all things you collect add to your value.”

Reg awakens to Riko’s glee but he’s horrified by the carnage Faputa has inflicted on the Narehate. Faputa tears the corpses of the villagers apart and rips through the rest. He tries to stop her but Faputa refuses. He threatens to “fight her,” and Faputa tells him she won’t hesitate to fight him if necessary. In a flashback, we see the first meeting between Reg and Faputa. Gaburoon was damaged by a Turbinid-Dragon and Faputa was crying. In the present, Faputa and Reg begin to fight. She stuff her arm down his throat claiming that she “cannot hurt Reg from the outside of his body.” In another flashback we see that Reg’s name was always Reg. Faputa name according to Gaburoon means “indestructible Princess.” Reg seems obsessed with “keeping up appearances,” he tries to civilize Faputa offering her his googles to cover her breasts. Reg also polices her use of language, claiming that she needs to be “more graceful.”

Faputa won’t give up on revenge

I’m interested in finding out whom taught Reg these manners and why. Riko uses Prushka to power up Reg. Angry, Faputa “reveals it was she who instructed Gaburoon to bring the stone into the village. It was in order to make Prushka more comfortable.” The fight is interrupted by iron rain and Wazukyan uses his body to create a canopy to protect the villagers. In another flashback, Faputa reveals that she has “three wishing eggs,” or Cradles of Desire. She also calls Irumyuui, who’s now the village, her “mother.” Reg asks her why she would want to destroy Irumyuui. From Faputa’s vantage point her mother is “alive in a constantly rotting state,” and she wants to free her.

Reg tells Faputa that he hopes to use his power to “rewrite,” the rules of Abyss. The fight concludes with Faputa slamming Reg to the ground, after a tearful moment. At this point, Reg most likely has to kill Faputa if he wants to rescue the village. She already done so much damage it might not be enough. I becoming more conflicted by this complicated situation. Made in Abyss’s aesthetic of having cute but sometimes grotesque creatures triggers a reaction where I feel sorry for the Narehate. It’s what makes this series so disturbing and interesting. Faputa is morally correct. Her mother is being exploited by the Narehate and violated her and her children. Narehate have it coming. However, the most responsible for the abuse is Wazukyan. It’s possible Faputa and Reg will make peace and save the village. I doubt it.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 09

Reg and Faputa return with her body parts in hand. They quickly rush to the village as bloodthirsty creatures start to become attracted to the smell of blood. Riko greets them outside of IIblu barrier. When Reg enters the village with Faputa’s body parts the village become uncontrollable and swarm him. Vueko tells him not to panic and asks how he acquired the parts. In a flashback, we see that Faputa knows that Reg is “too kind to destroy the village.” Apparently, Reg told her that his incinerator could “rewrite” the laws of the Abyss. If he can do that then Faputa may be able to enter the village.

Wazukyan eavesdrops on their conversations and calls Reg the “Prince,” and Faputa the “Princess.” He greets Vueko in a friendly manner and asks Riko if she hates him after finding out the truth. Riko says that she “doesn’t know him well enough to hate him.” Wazukyan reveals that he hasn’t abandoned his dream of delving deeper as the 6th layer is only the “entrance.” Wazukyan is excited that Riko took notice of this. Riko asks him if “hopes for her to use the power of the Cradle to allow them to leave the village.”

Reg fights Juroimoh

A conflict is beginning to arise in this arc. I think Riko wants to free the Narehate from their imprisonment and allow them to explore the Golden City. However, Faputa wants revenge on them and Reg has promised to help her. I’m not sure what side I would be on. Personally, I’m fond of Maa, who’s become my favorite Narehate. It’s a weird combination of creepy, adorable, sweet, and pathetic. If Faputa kills everyone I hope the Maaa manages to survive. Suddenly, Juroimoh begins attacking. Reg engages with it and Juroimoh becomes an even more grotesque creature.

Juroimoh shares the name of Vueko’s abusive father. Wazukyan explains why: ” Irumyuui created Juroimoh from the signals she received from Vueko.” Reg becomes overwhelmed by Juroimoh membrane and decides he must use his incinerator. Not only does he rips a hole in Juroimoh and also creates an opening in the village. Reg is afraid Faputa will enter the village and makes things worst. However, he passes out but gives a piece of Faputa to Moogie, Majikaja, and Maaa to protect Riko. Reg concern is correct. Faputa arrives with Gaburoon and tells the village it’s “time for their extermination.”

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 08

In Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 08, Faputa agrees to give Reg a part of her but he must keep his “promise.” After ripping off her own ears and arms she tells Reg that “Together, we will…exterminate them all.” My first thought was the Narehate but I doubt Reg would do it. In the past, it is revealed that the broth was indeed made from “Irumyuui’s children,” not only did the broth nourish the infected it “alleviated the symptoms of their infection.” Belaf has a nervous breakdown after learning the truth but Wazukyan isn’t concerned because Belaf is “one of the Three Sages.” Vueko is worried but heads to see Irumyuui.

Having transformed further, Irumyuui is nearly unrecognizable as she has become an enormous beast. However, she can still recognize Vueko and her children. Irumyuui has another child and Wazukyan takes it. He’s unwilling to even let Irumyuui keep it until it dies. Instead opting to kill it. He claims that “Pseudowater symptoms are best alleviated by fresh meat.” At this point it’s become clear that Irumyuui has been reduced to a food source and only Vueko cares for her. She considers killing Irumyuui and then herself. She’s unable to do so, instead she sobs, horrified at their situation.

Faputa gives Reg parts of herself in Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 08

The Narehate are born

Irumyuui continues to have children and Ganja slaughter them. The people begin to pray to her as she transforms further. Irumyuui becomes less connected to her children. Irumyuui takes Vueko and then begins moving. The Ganja follow. Irumyuui stops and begin consuming the flying creatures surrounding her. Racked with guilt, Belaf begs to be eaten by Irumyuui as penance for eating her children. A large hole opens in Irumyuui and Belaf enters. He emerges as the serpent we’ve seen in previous episodes. Wazukyan and the other Ganja see the “beauty” Belaf now possess and concludes that they must also sacrifice themselves.

Vueko is appalled accusing the Ganja of stealing Irumyuui’s wish. She attempts to kill herself by jumping off a cliff but she’s captured by Wazukyan and imprisoned inside Irumyuui’s mind. In the now “mindless” Irumyuui, Vueko receives signals from various parts of the village. It’s revealed that Irumyuui’s true wish was to create her last child to seek revenge for her other childrens murder. That child is Faputa. However, she unable to enter IIblu and therefore cannot seek her vengeance. Vueko tells the others that “Faputa is trying to free her mother, Irumyuui, which would mean the destruction of the village.” At this point I’m siding with Faputa as Wazukyan turned out to be a monster. The other Narehate are mostly innocent in my opinion. At some point Faputa must have meet or created Reg and he promised to help her get revenge. Wazukyan was afraid of Reg’s power in the last episode and now I think he knows about Reg and Faputa’s agreement.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 07

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 07 reveals how the Ganja fared after the reached the 6th layer. It doesn’t go well. One of the Interference Units eaten by an unknown creature. These units learn the human language quickly. They try to return to the 5th layer but human can’t maintain their forms after returning. Trapped, the Ganja resign themselves to their new home. The first issue is a lack of water. The are five possible location to get water. The first two are “swarming with dangerous beasts,” one has contaminated with “mining residue,” the other is too hot, leaving only one location habitable.

Irumyuui takes center stage as she can read unknow glyphs and later merges with a “Cradle of Desire.” The source of water the Ganja assumed was safe turns out to have been contaminated. The Ganja get sick developing diarrhea and causes their toes to melt and harden. It’s all gross really but that’s what makes this series so interesting and depressing. The Interference Units inform the Ganja that its an Artifact and is best used by simpleminded “juvenile’s” like Irumyuui. Since she’s sick, Vueko gives her the Artifact with Wazukyan’s permission.

Irumyuui merges with the Cradle of Desire

The following day the Artifact merges with Irumyuui, healing her and removing any pain. The Cradle of Desire grants Irumyuui her wish which isn’t made clear, but Vueko believes she wished for children because she creepily has several of them. Each one dies due to having no internal organs. Irumyuui has understandable emotional breakdown after each death. While she no longer experienced physical pain she does still feel emotional pain. Eventually, Vueko gets sick and is bedridden. Wazukyan feeds her a broth from a unknown source. When she awakens Vueko is completely healed. Something makes Vueko question what she ate, but before getting an answer Wazukyan says that everyone’s been healed and “that kid,” meaning Irumyuui “saved everyone.”

I think the Ganja either ate Irumyuui dead children or she produced food some other way. Since this is Made in Abyss eating dead creatures birth from a child seems most likely. Considering how much Irumyuui loved her child or at least thought she loved them it’s unlikely she was aware or happy about the Ganja eating them. This could be the reason she’s no longer in the village.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 06

In Made in Abyss Episode 06, “Lurking,” Riko considers which part of her body she’ll exchange for Nanachi, half her organs, legs, or eyes. She decides but Majikaja stops her. Nanachi tells her to leave. Maaa and Majikaja drag Riko out of Belaf’s home as Riko begs Nanachi to return to their journey. Riko asks Vueko if she has anyway to get Nanachi back. Before she can answer a spear pierces the wall above them resulting in water gushing out. Vueko says that a “luring” has begun. As a result of the Narehate being unable to leave the village, they “lure” creatures into the village to hunt. According to Vueko this is done to “increase the value” of the village. However, the creature called a Fuzosheppu is overwhelming the villagers. When it heads towards Prushka, Riko takes off to save her.

Riko manages to reach Poriyon the jeweler before the beast. Poriyon claims it was “pleasant and sensual to work and perfect her whistle,” and returns Prushka, now shiny and new. Poriyon cannot leave with Riko and escape the Fuzosheppu because its “the workshop itself,” and cannot be moved. However, Poriyon attempts to stop the Fuzosheppu itself but is consumed alive by it. Fuzosheppu then heads to the market. There it encounters Juroimo, the third member of the three sages. Juroimo uses his “great sword,” a sticky weapon resembling a sharp pillar. However, it doesn’t work. Majikaja says that due to the “cramped and crowded space,” Juroimo cannot use the great sword’s “ancient power.”

Riko has a plan

Moogie and the other Narehate seek to hunt the creature, than allow it to attack the market. Riko refuses to allow the Narehate to meet their end so she forms a plan with Majikaja. She cuts off some of her hair and gives it to Majikaja so it will use its “fast body”. Riko rides Majikaja and the Fuzosheppu gives chase. It follows them until they pass through a reflective surface, which causes the creature to stop. Distracted, Riko orders some Narehate to ignite some fire causing an explosion, sending the Fuzosheppu flying upward into a net. Trapped the Narehate attack it with spears.

The Fuzosheppu stops moving and the Narehate rejoice. However, the creature isn’t dead yet and it grabs some of the Narehate including Maaa. Prushka spirit tells Riko to “call her,” and Riko blows the whistle and Reg comes to the rescue. The White Whistle releases the true potential of a relic like Reg. Powered by Riko and Prushka, Reg attacks the Fuzosheppu but the Queen already died. The Fuzosheppu isn’t a single creature but a hive that moves the entire nest. At this point Wazukyan appears to congratulate Riko. Afterward Riko asks the sage how she can get Nanachi back. Wazukyan tells her that a piece of Faputa would likely do it. Reg heads to speak with Faputa.

Vueko reveals to the Narehate that she was a member of the Ganja group and a former sage. Vueko wonders if Irumyuui brought Riko, Reg, and Nanachi to the village. She emotions that Reg must be a “true resident of the Golden City,” she even claims that Wazukyan was “scared,” when he witnessed Reg fighting. She then prepares to explain what Faputa actually wants. The stakes have increased in this episode. As I’ve been saying often in this arc I think the Narehate obsession with value is going result in them turning on the trio due to their “value.” Nanachi has already sold herself and Riko lost her hair. Their value have declined since arriving in this village. I think Reg will be made to sacrifice something in the coming episodes. I’m a little scared for the trio but I’m excited to see what happens.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 05

Reg is attacked by a Turbinid-Dragon. Gaburoon rescues him and escorts him back to the village. During the journey Reg learns that Gaburoon is a “Interference Unit,” a “robots capable of independent thought and actions.” These units seek to observe and gather knowledge. There was one unit placed in each layer and they cannot cross layers, however, they can share information with each other. According to Gaburoon they haven’t shared information in a long time, meaning the other units are either broken or taken. Reg isn’t one of these units, but Gaburoon wonders if they share a creator. That said, Gaburoon doesn’t know who his creator is and ask Reg to find out who created them.

Moogie officially introduces Riko to one of the Three Sages, Wazukyan. Riko becomes embarrassed at not properly introducing herself to such an important being. Wazukyan doesn’t seem phased and gives her a “high five” and leaves. The Narehate teaches Riko some basic Narehate language. Moogie explains that their language has “lots of words in which many actions and names are stuck together.” For example, Iruburu, the name of the village, means 50% “village,” 40% “cradle,” and 10% “mother.” Riko quickly learns the basics.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 05 Nanachi sells itself for Mitty

Later Riko heads to a cave in the village called Dogupu (Within the Eye). While there she encounters an imprisoned woman, Vuelo Eluko. She was an opponent of establishing the village which she claims had terrible “origins.” She was imprisoned. However, her opinion apparently has changed after observing the village. Riko frees her without hesitation, claiming she doesn’t care if she’s a “bad person,” or not she just wants to see her friends. In the village, Vuelo (in disguise) and Riko head to Belaf. Riko sees Nanachi laying next to “Mitty.” After meeting Belaf, it is revealed that Mitty is a clone that Belaf got it by sacrificing “half its body, 724 limbs, and a portion of its sensory organs” from Bondrewd.

Finally, Belaf reveals that Nanachi sold themself to buy Mitty and if Riko wants them back she’ll have to sell parts of her body. The Narehate in the village have made it clear that they convent the body of a human child. I speculated that the “perverse obsession with Riko’s body” would result in a sacrifice. Belaf asks for Riko’s eyes, legs, or “half her innards.” As dark as Made in Abyss can get, I don’t think it will have Riko sacrifice that much. Faputa, Gaburoon, and Vuelo all have some opposition to the village, so Reg, Riko, and Nanachi might join forces to escape, especially if the Narehate can’t leave the village.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 03

In Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 3, Village of the Hollows, Riko, Nanachi, and Reg follow Majikaja up some stairs. Nanachi explains that “the force field is not present,” so the curse is no threat to them currently. However, the creatures in the village begin to follow the trio, so Nanachi warns Reg. She’s unsure if the creatures are Narehate due to their intelligence. Majikaja leads them to “the jeweler” who’s chipping away at Prushka. However, the jeweler is improving the white whistle, according to Majikaja, the stone hasn’t “assumed its intended form as an instrument.” He takes them to the market.

Riko finds pages from her mothers notes, she wants to buy them but must “exchange something of value.” Majikaja tells her that her body is valuable and she could consider selling her body parts. This is an alarming revelation. I except in the future Riko will be threatened by one of the Narehate that wants a piece of her valuable body, even though Majikaja claims “stealing value is the gravest sin,” I’d imagine that someone will break that rule. However, knowing Riko and this series, she might sell parts of herself for information like her mothers notes.

Narehate being torn apart for harming Meinya.

The price of damaging value

In typical Made in Abyss body horror, Meinya is squeezed so hard by a Narehate that it’s intestines pop out. Meinya is a highly durable creature that is a routinely used as a source of the series body horror. The trio witness what is called the “balancing,” or as Majikaja frames it “the price for damaging a value that belonged to someone else.” During the balancing dark shapes remove value from the offending Narehate. The Narehate closely value their belonging so to have them forcibly removed seems to have an emotion cost. The process is also brutal, as the Narehate’s skin is “torn open.” Majikaja notes that anything that happens “outside the village” cannot be rectified by the village.

Riko is compensated for her lost but feels weird about accepting it. Regardless, she uses the compensation to buy food and lodging. The questionable food makes her sick. Nanachi and Reg try to find medicine for her but are interrupted by a loud sound. Majikaja says that it signals the arrival of “the embodiment of value,” Faputa. Reg heads off to find Faputa. The Narehate princess, Faputa, rides on the shoulder of a giant robot. Made in Abyss introduces the value culture of the Narehate. Considering that they were once humans who lost the original forms valuing the human body seems to make sense. However, the culture is rather toxic and I suspect it will only get worse.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 02

In the second episode of Made in Abyss Season 2, Capital of the Unreturned our trio, Nanachi, Riko, and Reg, explore the sixth layer and find themselves being watched. They encounter some new beasts. The Mizoujack is a frog like creature that are considered “docile.” According to Lyza’s notebook their ” freshly laid eggs are good,” on of the main themes of Made in Abyss is survival. Not just for the humans but all the living creatures in the universe. It’s important to know which beast is prey and which is predatory. The environment is a part of everything’s survival.

Along with the bathroom humor (and realism) Made in Abyss uses food to illustrate how difficult life in the abyss is. The source of the food can be gross but it seems like Riko can always make them edible. Taking her mothers advice Riko and the others eat the eggs of the Mizoujacks. The eggs are round, spiral shaped, and light purple. After boiling them and killing the larva, they continued to move even after Riko fried them. Riko considers her friends at the higher level and she and Nanachi both write letters. They design a vessel to carry them to the surface but it’s comically snatch from the sky by flying creature.

Prushka’s stolen

After making camp Nanachi, Riko, and Reg awaken to find someone has entered their cave despite Reg’s trap, and Nanachi’s ability to read force fields. Regardless, whomever or whatever has stolen Riko’s white whistle, Prushka. With Reg’s keen senses the trio is able to track down a village. Along the way the locate a disturbing sight, two dead creatures with hairs from Riko and Nanachi stuffed in their anuses. A mysterious figure follows them watching as the reach the village. Once inside they encounter a number of creatures. One attempts to communicated with them. Majikaja as it’s called, looks to be stitched into a robot made of various materials.

It’s language is clumsy but sufficient to talk to Riko. Majikaja gave me an instant sense of dread. Knowing this series something terrible happened to it and yet I’m curious what occurred and what Majikaja actually looks like. Anyway, it tells them that “a specialist is working on the stone,” and they should “follow”. Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 2 is well paced, further exploring the most dangerous layer, while introducing us to new creatures, environments, and dangers.
