At the end of Made in Abyss Episode 09, Juroimoh and Reg’s fight cause damage to the village, leaving a hole which Faputa enter, finally ready to seek her revenge. In episode 10, All That You Gather, Belaf frees Nanachi from his ownership. He gives Nanachi his memories (his value) but warns her that if Nanachi leaves the village with Mitty “she will cease to exist,” because “every being that was created in the village can only exist in it, and will stop existing if taken outside it.” Nanachi decides that Mitty should be set free. Nanachi heads towards the barrier and Mitty disappears. Belaf and the other Narehate from it’s house all fade away as they reach the the end of the barrier. Belaf monologues that “whether it be despair or joy, all things you collect add to your value.”
Reg awakens to Riko’s glee but he’s horrified by the carnage Faputa has inflicted on the Narehate. Faputa tears the corpses of the villagers apart and rips through the rest. He tries to stop her but Faputa refuses. He threatens to “fight her,” and Faputa tells him she won’t hesitate to fight him if necessary. In a flashback, we see the first meeting between Reg and Faputa. Gaburoon was damaged by a Turbinid-Dragon and Faputa was crying. In the present, Faputa and Reg begin to fight. She stuff her arm down his throat claiming that she “cannot hurt Reg from the outside of his body.” In another flashback we see that Reg’s name was always Reg. Faputa name according to Gaburoon means “indestructible Princess.” Reg seems obsessed with “keeping up appearances,” he tries to civilize Faputa offering her his googles to cover her breasts. Reg also polices her use of language, claiming that she needs to be “more graceful.”
Faputa won’t give up on revenge
I’m interested in finding out whom taught Reg these manners and why. Riko uses Prushka to power up Reg. Angry, Faputa “reveals it was she who instructed Gaburoon to bring the stone into the village. It was in order to make Prushka more comfortable.” The fight is interrupted by iron rain and Wazukyan uses his body to create a canopy to protect the villagers. In another flashback, Faputa reveals that she has “three wishing eggs,” or Cradles of Desire. She also calls Irumyuui, who’s now the village, her “mother.” Reg asks her why she would want to destroy Irumyuui. From Faputa’s vantage point her mother is “alive in a constantly rotting state,” and she wants to free her.
Reg tells Faputa that he hopes to use his power to “rewrite,” the rules of Abyss. The fight concludes with Faputa slamming Reg to the ground, after a tearful moment. At this point, Reg most likely has to kill Faputa if he wants to rescue the village. She already done so much damage it might not be enough. I becoming more conflicted by this complicated situation. Made in Abyss’s aesthetic of having cute but sometimes grotesque creatures triggers a reaction where I feel sorry for the Narehate. It’s what makes this series so disturbing and interesting. Faputa is morally correct. Her mother is being exploited by the Narehate and violated her and her children. Narehate have it coming. However, the most responsible for the abuse is Wazukyan. It’s possible Faputa and Reg will make peace and save the village. I doubt it.
