One Piece Chapter 1016: Yami gets a powerup and Tama takes control

One Piece chapter 1016 cover
One Piece chapter 1016 cover

One Piece manga chapter 1016 utilizes CP-0 to update the audience on the battle. The unknown member of CP-0, says that “5,000 soldiers have been incapacitated, leaving the Beasts Pirates with 24,000 soldiers and the alliance with 3,000.” These numbers are complicated by the revolt of the Pleasures and Waiters against Queen. As a result, the Beast Pirates have lost 4,000 soldiers and the alliance gained them. CP-0 notes that “the disparity in manpower was shrinking . . . the battle constantly changes with new information.” I think this is the theme of this arc so far.

I have predicted Zeus will get his redemption arc. It appears I was correct. It’s confirmed that Zeus is inside the Clima-Tact. He explains when he was eaten, “his soul left his body,” and entered the Clima-Tact. Nami is happy about it. However, Zeus tells her that Big Mom is the only one who can remove him. Suddenly, they run into Bao Haung and Ulti. The latter charges at the Strawhat’s (Nami and Usopp). She grabs Tama from Usopp, blaming her for turning the Gifters against them. For those that may have forgotten, Tama’s devil fruit ability, Kibi Kibi no Mi grants her the power to “tame” animals with her “dango.”

Zeus defeats Ulti in One Piece Chapter 1016.
Zeus defeats Ulti

I am the Mighty Zeus

The Beast Pirates are part animals, as a result, they can be controlled by her if they eat a dango. Ulti begins choking Tama. Enraged, Nami swings her Clima-Tact at Ulti. Zeus increases its length and adds spikes. He tells Nami that he can “help” and she should use her baton like always. Zeus believes Ulti is still weak from Big Mom’s attack and a “lightning blast” would defeat her. Nami refuses because Tama is too close. Using his Special Attack: Green Star Sargasso, Usopp frees Tama, leaving Ulti vulnerable.

Zeus turns into a large black cloud and a lightning bolt strikes the ground. Ulti evades but Zeus claims it’s not over until he “hits the target.” Ulti collapses shocking Bao Haung. Ironically, she was excited to tell the soldiers that Momonosuke was dead, hoping to kill morale, instead she accidentally tells them the two Tobi Roppo were defeated. This does ruin morale, just for her side. Usopp incapacitates her with his Green Star Devil, giving Tama a chance to speak through her. Some of the Beast Pirates get excited hearing their master. Finally, Yamato prepares to stall Kaido until Luffy returns.

One Piece Chapter 993: Recap and Review

Chapter 993 – “Wano Country’s Dream”

One Piece chapter 993 opens with an explanation of the Fire Festival. Every year in the Flower Capital, the people of Wano celebrate in the hope that someday the samurai of the Kozuki will save them. This dream was the driving force that kept them going. Able to breathe clean air, taste great water, and avoid death, the Fire Festival was the one day they were free. Oda is reminding us of what’s at stake. Meanwhile, Queen releases Excite Bullets indiscriminately into the crowd infecting victims, turning them into icy demons. The infection spreads through contact Queen orders the doors closed to trap everyone inside.

Out of the way, you Bastards

Meanwhile, Luffy is on the first floor of the basement. He and Sanji encounter the Beast Pirate Headliner, Briscola. The Beast Pirate creates a Gorilla on his arm using it like a fist. Most Beast Pirates have rather silly devil-fruit abilities. This is more than usual (you can argue that most devil-fruit abilities are silly). Regardless, Luffy and Sanji bicker over Luffy’s tendency to waste energy picking fights. Suddenly, Jinbe arrives, using Shark Tile Punch. Jinbe says that he’s going to “escort” both Luffy and Sanji to the roof to fight Kiado. Elsewhere, Bao Huang uses her ability to see through the eyes of cats. She locates Yamato and Momonosuke leaving tower one. King orders his men to kill Momonosuke hoping it will kill the samurai’s spirit.

I’m participating in this war

Shinobu is attacked by Sasaki while holding Momonosuke. Yamato steps in to block the attack and face the Hundred Beast Pirates Armored Corps. Elsewhere, Kaido rises unharmed by the Samurai. He tells them that their “cuts are too shallow,” and they’re “nothing” like Oden. He fires several wind scythes, cutting off Kikunojo’s left arm. I’m a little disappointed that the Red Scabbard wasn’t more effective. They were never going to defeat Kiado, but I thought they might do more damage. Luffy is going to defeat Kiado, and considering how long it might take him to get to the roof, the Red Scabbard might all be dead. Finally, I am excited to see what Yamato can do.

My Top 5 Manga Artists

Personally, I’ve always preferred anime to manga. Animation is more dynamic and expressive. The fluid nature of my favorite kind of animation, Sakuga, has particularly captivated me. Action sequences are far more exciting when animated. That’s not to say that 2D art can’t do such things. However, it’s much more difficult. Like comic books, when deciding to read a manga series the art style is more important to me that the story. I will even read a manga series with an average story if the art is good. So what do I think constitutes good art?

Generally, manga is presented in black and white. This means unlike American comics, the shadow takes a more prominent role. Without the advantage of color, an artist must use black, white and gray to convey depth. Lines become more important. The use of hatching and cross-hatching, along with white space can help a manga-ka distinguish their artwork from others. With hard work and technical proficiency, artists can make a name for themselves. Personally, I look for good character designs, details, I favor realism but I don’t mind surreal art. I managed to collect at least 20 artists, but here is the first five:

5. Inio Asano (Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction)

Asano combines detailed backgrounds with childlike characters. His characters are notable for having eyes that are far apart, but his characters don’t look deformed. Asano’s most recent work is the seinen manga series, Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction. A spaceship appears over Tokyo three years prior to the beginning of the story. However, the story focuses on humans not the aliens. It’s a brutal series (for the aliens) but worth the read.

4. Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga)

Vinland Saga became a big anime hit last year. While it feature amazing animation, it’s Makoto Yukimura’s art style that stands out. His artwork isn’t too realistic, but has a high level of realism. This type of art is important for depicting the historical setting and characters of the series. His art often features a great deal of detail.

3. Eiichiro Oda (One Piece)

One Piece is one of the best manga of all time. Eiichiro Oda’s pirate series has a distinct art-style. He plays with portion. Many of his characters are extremely tall with long limbs (but they’re not giants), some of Oda’s characters are top-heavy with short legs. One criticism I would have of Oda’s art style is that his female characters are too similar.

2. Tite Kubo (Bleach)

One thing that you may not notice right away about Tite Kubo’s art in Bleach is that he doesn’t draw backgrounds. Or at least he rarely draws them. This results in a lot of white space being used. Kubo makes great use of his white space often filling it with characters with heavy shadow.

1. Ryoichi Ikegami (Crying Freeman)

I consider Ryoichi Ikegami to be one of the best manga-ka. His artwork is stunning and detailed. His characters feel real and the clothing he draws is amazing. One thing I notice is that Ikegami is one of the manga-ka that features many black characters. Part of what makes Ikegami’s art style so distinct is that each character looks different from the other. However, that difference is more subtle than other manga. I would encourage you to read his Crying Freeman manga series.

Do you have a favorite manga-ka and/or art style? Why do you think you were drawn to them?

One Piece Chapter Recap & Review

Chapter 943, SMILE

Wow. Every once in a while Oda shows his genius in storytelling. Creating unexpected twists, clever plot development and heartbreaking moments. One Piece was always and will continue to be the standard for manga, especially shonen manga. In the previous chapter, Yasuie meet his end at the hands of Orochi. This resulted in the towns people laughing while crying. SMILE was introduced back in the Punk Hazard arc (ch: 689). An artificial Zoan Devil Fruit created with SAD, by Doflamingo and Caesar Clown. We were lead to believe that it created devil fruit users and nothing else.

It is explained that SMILE is responsible for stripping the people of Ebisu Town of their sadness. Shinobu explains that SMILE has several effects, they cause the eater to ” lose the ability to swim as well as the ability to express negative emotions, causing them to only be able to express joy.” SMILE also only has an 1 in 10 success rate when giving devil fruit abilities. This explains the why the Beast Pirates aren’t all devil fruit users, while putting a limitation on the drugs effectiveness. She explains the ranks of the Beast Pirates, The Waiters are those who have yet to eat any fruits, the Gifters are those who obtained an ability after eating a SMILE fruit and the Pleasures are those who did not gain any abilities after eating a SMILE fruit and can only smile.

Kiado, Doflamingo and Caesar named it SMILE after the negative effect. With the defective fruits still possessing the negative side effects, Orochi used them to force the civilians of Ebisu Town to lose their ability to express anger and sadness. He hated the sorrow and grief they expressed when their families members died. The saddest part of this chapter comes when Toko tries to bring her father back with medicine. Orochi notices her and takes aim, shooting at her. Sanji and Zoro save her shocking the citizens. As I predicted the corrupt behavior of Orochi will come back to bite him as the citizens will turn on him. I’m excited to see him get what he deserves.

One Piece Chapter 932 Review – The Shogun and the Courtesan

Chapter 932 Cover

Robin is threatened with death. If she “tells the truth,” she will die a painless death, however, if she lies she will be susceptible to “excruciating torture.” When asked “what is she doing here?” she responds that she is “tracking the flow of money inside the flower capital.” When she answers she’s attacked with shuriken’s, but Robin disappears. She used her devil fruit abilities to create a human clone of herself. Robin confirms that she was spotted to Nami, Brook and Shinobu, and there are 11 ninja in the castle.

Robin returns to the banquet hall, Orochi greets her. When the Oniwabanshu being crawling across the ceiling, Robin uses a mask to hide her face. The conversation shifts to how the yakuza uses brute force against their enemies. Orochi tells his men that this year “marks the 12th since the death of Oden Kozuki.” He tells them of the plot of the “nine Red Sheaths,” to get revenge and take “his head.” His men seem to think he’s delusional and shouldn’t be concerned with the followers of Oden.

O-Toko uncontrollable laughter

He believes that the attacks on Jack and Yokozuna may have come from Kinemon. Orochi claims that he saw Oden die with his own eyes, but the dead body of his son, Momonosuke was never recovered. I’ve complained about the size of the characters in this arc, but some of them are obviously needed. It’s interesting to see the adversaries in this arc speak and we get a since of their motivation. Orochi’s men don’t take this threat seriously. We know that he’s right but they don’t. This is of course to the benefit of the Strawhat’s and Kinemon.

Komurasaki slaps Orochi

O-toko begins laughing, much to the ire of Orochi. The little girl can’t control her laughter, Orochi draws his sword when Komurasaki tells him to “stop.” She even goes as far as slapping him. She seems to justify her actions by claiming that she “won’t yield a single step, when she believe she right.” She stands in front of Orochi as he activates his devil fruit, transforming into a eight headed dragon. Komurasaki claims that as a daughter of a samurai, she would rather die than be a “weak” wife. Orochi calls her a whore. Meanwhile, Robin grabs O-toko, exposing herself to the ninja.

Orochi in his Devil Fruit form

I’ve stated this before, while I love the art style of One Piece it is almost impossible to tell the difference between some female characters. I couldn’t tell which characters was Robin or Komurasaki. It’s a small problem though, but considering the variety of character designs this series has it’s interesting that all his “beautiful woman” tend to look the same. Maybe he models them after his wife or something. Komurasaki is clearly the daughter of one of the samurai, probably the daughter of Oden and sister of Momo. I wonder if Robin will be able to escape from this situation, carrying O-toko will make this harder. That said Brook, Nami and Shinobu are waiting.
