Furuhashi’s psywave patterns fluctuate as he rush towards and battles the Kaiju. His momentary spikes are equal to Ichikawa’s. Seeing his potential the defense force believe he could become a “monster.” Preparing to take the core exposing shot, Furuhashi begins to overheat. He succeeds a reveals the core. He call for Reno to take the final shot. Reno hits the Kaiju with the final kill shot. Ogata flashes back to when he was informed by Hikari Shinomiya that she was going to test for Kaiju No. 4. He wonders if she would still be alive if he told her that she should try.
Regardless, Captain Ogata passes Ichikawa and gives his recommendation to Ashiro. The news of Reno’s training spreads among the Defense Force members. Kafka is shocked and initially doesn’t approve of what Reno’s doing. Kikoru Shinomiya checks him for disrespecting Reno as a solider and not giving him any credit. If he’s going to get stronger so shall she. Kafka seems inspired by Reno and questions his own efforts.
Vice Captain Hoshin trains Kafka
Vice Captain Hoshin surprises him and pretends to attack him. Kafka falls to the floor in fear, which Hoshin considers “payback,” for hiding his “identity.” He thanks Kafka for “saving the third division.” Vice Captain Hoshin says that “he’ll defeat No.9” on his own. He doesn’t think that Kafka needs to transform ever again. Kafka refuses. He wants to be recognized for his “own efforts.” His normal state isn’t strong enough to save everyone so he must transform.
Vice Captain Hoshin decides that he will teach Kafka how to fight. They head to the Ryunei Shrine, he recalls his ancestors war with a Daikaijj of the Meireki era. In 1657, the majority of the Kanto area was destroyed by a massive Kaiju. At that time, Kaiju were fought with more primitive weapons. Showing that humans have always been able to kill Kaiju even with get costs. Hoshin decides to begin training right there. Without weapons or Kaiju forms. Hoshin schools him, but notices that he’s gotten stronger.
Vice Captain Hoshin is going to teach him so his combat abilities are strong enough so he doesn’t need to use Kaiju No. 8. Kafka needs to rely less on his Kaiju form the better. When they leave, Kafka goes to bow to the shrine, he sees a samurai lookin figure. It’s not made clear whether it’s a real person or a ghostly figure representing the warriors of the past. Kafka doesn’t know the difference either.
