Kaiju No. 8, Season 2, Episode 1 returns after the aftermath of Kafka Hibino imprisonment. The majority of the new 3rd Division members are reassigned to different Divisions, vowing to get even stronger. The episode opens with Kafka having a nightmare where Mina gets hurt as the Divisions hunt him down. He awakens still imprisoned. Reno Ichikawa, Iharu Furuhashi, and Kikoru Shinomiya adjusts to their new assignments.
We are introduced to the Captain and Vice-Captain of the first Division, Gen Narumi and Eiji Hasegawa. Gen is a childish Otaku with a love of video games and Gundam figures. He’s messy and seems to have a shopping addiction. Kikoru quickly acknowledges that she has no respect for him. Suddenly, an alarm goes off signaling a Kaiju’s appearance.
Gen vs Godzilla
The Kaiju is quickly identifiable as one that resembles the most legendary Kaiju, Godzilla. Division 1, gets to show off their skills as they work together to maneuver the Kaiju away from the city and into a more secure location. Kikoru marvels at their strength, strategy, and skills. Gen prepares to attack the Kaiju. He arms himself and jumps out of the moving helicopter. With his weapon he lands on the Kaiju and pierces it’s back.
With magnificent power, Gen causes the Kaiju to explode leaving its blood and guts everywhere. Gen is a little egotistical, being upset that he doesn’t get the credit in the magazines he deserve. His Vice-Captain, Eiji Hasegawa acts as a straight man. He’s mature and serious. Gen, Eiji, and Kikoru, are told by Isao Shinomiya that Kafka will be joining them. He initially passes on Kafka, but the later makes an argument for joining the Division.
Gen says he only cares about “strength and results” and threatens to kill Kafka if he loses control. Somewhere in the basement of the facility, Isao has a secret.
