Kaiju No. 8 Episode 7 Recap: “Kaiju No. 9”

When we left the last episode of Kaiju No. 8, Reno and Iharu encounter the powerful humanoid Kaiju No. 9. The humanoid Kaiju targets Iharu’s heart and pierces a hole through his chest. However, Kaiju No. 9 claims he not “accurate,” in his human form and misses the vital organ. As Iharu screams in agony, Kaiju No. 9 transforms and decides he wants a live sample of the Defense Force. He able to jam the frequency of the ear comms and makes the surrounding area “completely undetectable.” He attacks Reno, piercing his stomach and leg. The shielding of their suits is useless.

Recalling what Kikoru told him regarding Kaiju No. 9’s ability, Reno is able to dodge his attacks by watching his fingers. He tells Iharu to flee and hopes to buy him some time to get help. However, he returns just in time to save Reno from a new attack from Kaiju No. 9. He tells Reno he will be saving him. Kaiju No. 9 informs them that they wouldn’t be able to escape his barrier anyway. Accepting their fate, Reno and Iharu prepare to fight together. Iharu fires off a conductor bullet, paralyzing Kaiju No. 9. It doesn’t have a long enough effect.

Reno and Iharu are near death

Kaiju No. 9 aims his bullet fingers at Iharu, however, he dodges it like Reno did. Iharu takes the opportunity to fire another conductor bullet into Kaiju No. 9’s leg, giving Reno the chance to unload on him. Unfortunately, Kaiju No. 9 is able to create a wall of Kaiju corpse and unleashes a massive barrage of bullet on Reno. Elsewhere, Vice Captain is informed that Reno and Iharu vital signs and communication have gone offline. Kafka and Kikoru both know what this means. While, Reno survived his initial barrage, Kaiju No. 9 proceeds to fire several more bullets into his back. Iharu tries to help but it’s no use. As he prepares for his death Kafka in his Kaiju form arrive.

Surprising Kaiju No. 9, Kafka is able to sucker punch him and knock his head off. He then picks up Reno, who is ashamed that he made Kafka transform. Seeing that he can’t escape with Reno, Kafka prepares to fight Kaiju No. 9. The later asks why Kafka is fighting him if he’s a Kaiju. He then pierces through Kafka’s chest like he did Reno and follows that up by using even large array of bullets on Kafka. This has no effect as Kafka let’s out a massive roar creating a force field, He then uses his speed and strength to overwhelmed Kaiju No. 9. Kafka hits him with his massive punch, knocking him far away and exposing Kaiju No. 9’s core. Before he can finish the job, two Defense Force soldiers appear and distract him. Kaiju No. 9 takes this opportunity to escape, leaving Kafka to do the same.

However, he encounters Vice Captain Hoshina, who let’s off an array of attacks which Kafka barely evades. He fears the look in Hoshina’s eyes, as the Vice Captain asks for permission to remove a “limiter,” and unleash combat power 92%. He’s ready to “neutralize” Kafka. This episode was amazing. Action packed and suspenseful. I liked how Reno and Iharu was able to fight against Kaiju No. 9, they couldn’t win but the attempted to do so, using teamwork and intellect. Kaiju No. 9 has a creepy demeanor. He’s very analytical and cold. That’s perfect for a villain of course but he’s always adapting because of it and I fear he won’t be dominated by Kafka again.
