I was only a matter of time before Kafka was going to have to reveal his secret, in Kaiju No. 8 episode 10, he’s forced to do just that. At the end of the last episode, Kaiju No. 10, appeared defeated only to transform into a much larger version of itself. Despite it’s large stature, Kaiju No. 10 is still getting cut by Vice Captains blade. Unfortunately, Hoshina’s suit had reached it maximum and he loses his strength. With his speed and small size, he’s able to avoid Kaiju No. 10’s attacks for a while. However, he’s eventually he hit and badly injured.
He recalls being told that as a child that the “era of blades had passed,” and he should give up on being on the Defense Force. With the civilians almost all evacuated and the other Kaiju losing, Vice Captain Hoshina decides to “fight to the end.” We are shown more flashbacks where Hoshina is told his skills won’t be useful against the Kaiju. It’s Mina that told him that his skills were useful. She believed that one day smaller and powerful Kaiju might emerge.
Kafka saves the day
In the present, Hoshina unleashes a series of strikes back to back. Kafka rushes to his rescue but Mina arrives. Armed with her massive gun, she manages to blow of it’s limb but it regenerates too fast. Hoshina uses Number Four: Wind Slasher, to cut it’s achilles, undermining it’s movement. It doesn’t work. Kikoru tries to help but she can even scratch it. However, Hoshina decides if he cuts open the shell, Kikoru can “chop into the wounds.” This does work.
While the Kaiju is down, Mina blows a hole near it’s spine exposing the core. She only has one bullet remaining. The other members of the Defense Force appear shoot and hacking at the giant Kaiju to preventing it from regenerating. Unleashing combat power at 96%, Mina finally blows up Kaiju No. 10. When it seems safe, a massive Yoju bomb appears in the sky comparing to the power of a nuclear bomb. With no choice left, Kafka transforms into his Kaiju No. 8 form.
Kafka develop rockets and flies toward the bomb. He pushes it out of reach but the explosion still does damage to the city. After the explosion clears, Mina prepares to arrest Kafka. It made since that Kafka would be exposed while protecting others. I predicted that the other members of the Defense Force particularly, Kikoru and Reno. However, I wonder if they will be punished. The did keep this secret. That said I fully expect Reno, Kikoru, and Kafka to maintain their positions within the Defense force but at what cost?
