In Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, episode 8, it is explained that “in Japan, ninety-nine percent of criminal trials end in a guilty verdict.” Hiromi Higuruma is a defense lawyer and he’s defending his client, Keita Oe. In March 2016, a mother and daughter were found dead in Morioka City. Keita was arrested after fleeing the police. They found the murder weapon at his home. The evidence is stacked against him. However, Higuruma believes him. He argues that it’s possible that Keita is suffering from trauma he experienced at the hands of police.
Keita’s story is hard to believe but Higuruma wants to investigate further. Public defenders are at a disadvantage. Overworked and underpaid, they often fail to defend clients. Even worst their clients often blame them for failing to win, rather than the system. Higuruma’s friend Takagi notes that “clients abuse their lawyers”, but Higuruma counters that “people are just against the wall financially and emotionally, so they take it out on their lawyers”.
Guilty
Higuruma and Shimizu manage to get Keita an innocent verdict. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter. The prosecution appeals and get a life sentence. Lawyers like Higuruma have to rely on “limited funding” and a “small staff”. The prosecutors didn’t even need to add new evidence. Higuruma becomes angry at the system. When the judge announces that “objections to the guilty verdict against Keita Oe must be filed within fifteen days”, Higuruma interrupts.
He starts slamming a gavel on the table and his curse, Judgeman, begins to manifest behind him.
Yuji and Higuruma prepare to battle
The rest of the episode shows a flashback where Yuji and Rin Amai first meet. In Sendai City, Rin and another student are attacked by bullies. Rin was aware of how to manipulate the bullies by laughing with the bullies. The other student wasn’t so lucky. Yuji appears and beats up the bullies. Megumi and Remi head to Kahamecho Station.
Unfortunately, for Megumi, Remi was lying him. He meets Reggie, a oddly dressed Jujutsu Sorcerer. Megumi is enraged and summons Divine Dog: Totality. Elsewhere, Yuji tries and fails to convince Higuruma to use his points. They prepare for battle and Higuruma activates his Domain Expansion: Deadly Sentencing.
