Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Episode 4: “Perfect Preparation”

Jujutsu Kaisen manga fans have been anticipating this episode for years and it didn’t disappoint. When Maki returns to the Zenin Clan household she’s meet with her hysterical mother who screams for her to “come back,” as Maki heads towards the vault for cursed weapons. Once she enters, she’s welcomed by her father, Ogi Zenin. He already has Mai, who has been sliced in the abdomen and is bleeding out.

In a flashback, Jinjchi reveals to Naoya that they plan to use the notice from Jujutsu Headquarters as cover to kill Megumi, Mai, and Maki for “aiding” Gojo. In the present, Ogi activates Falling Blossom Emotion. Maki prepares her weapon, Juzo Kumiya’s masterpiece, the cursed tool Dragon-Bone. They have a quick confrontation, which Maki appears to win. However, he father uses his blazing cursed technique to slice her eye, breaking her glasses, and cutting open her abdomen.

The next Toji

Ogi drags his daughters to training room filled with grade 2 or lower cursed spirits. Along the way he complains. His daughters were “useless,” not possessing any techniques worthy of the Zenin, leaving him without the ability to lead the clan. He leaves Maki and Mai to their deaths. Mai saves her sister and uses her Construction technique to make her a katana. Twins are treated a one in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, causing Maki to have an incomplete Heavenly Restriction. With Mai dead, Maki can reach her full potential.

Mai leaves her sister with one last message, “destroy everything.” Ogi notices that all the cursed have been exorcised. He then notices the presence of Maki. A presence that reminds him of Toji. He activates his Blazing Courage technique, but Maki cuts the top of his head off. Beginning her path of destruction with her father. Alarms sound as Maki faces the Kukuru Unit. Maki armed with the Dragon-Bone and Split Soul Katana, cuts them down in an amazing scene inspired by Kill Bill. It brutal and satisfying.

The Hei

Next up, The Hei. The strongest sorcerers in the Zenin Clan, featuring anyone semi-grade 1 or higher. Naoya is the head, with the late Naobito and Ogi, as well as, soon to be dead, Jinichi, Chojuro, and Ranta. Chojuro strikes with his cursed technique, Earth Manipulation. He attempts to crush Maki in a pair of massive hands. It does nothing. Nobuaki and Chojuro try to stop Maki but they both get their throats ripped out.

Ranta uses his paralysis technique to try to stop Maki, while Jinichi uses his Missile Fists to crush Maki. Ranta warns him that she become just like Toji, and unlike him she’s not going to spare the Zenin Clan. Maki decapitated Jinichi, while Ranta died from her overwhelming his technique and him bleeding out as a result. This leaves one last victim of the Hei at the household, Naoya Zenin.

Maki’s final stance

Projection Sorcery is one of those Jujutsu Kaisen techniques that remains confusing no matter how many times they explain it. The technique “doesn’t allow the user to egregiously ignore the laws of physics or trajectories.” Naoya has a limit, however, “maintaining activation of Projection Sorcery allows speed to continuously build.” He overwhelms Maki at first, using his speed to get free hits. Still suffering from damage sustained by Ogi and the Hei, Maki needs to end the fight fast. She takes the Shiranui-Gata stance.

Maki has been counting their entire fight and has the ability to see Naoya. She counters his attack and cracks his skull with a devastating punch. She heads inside where she asks her mother why she told her to “come back.” Her mother doesn’t give much of an answer and Maki slices her throat. Surprisingly, Naoya survives. However, Maki’s mother plunges a knife into his back as they both died. After this slaughter, Maki finds the rest of the Zenin Clan members and kills them too. Eliminating the Zenin Clan that tormented her and Mai.
