Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 06

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 06, The Fire, is the episode I have been dreading. I have always loved Genryusai Yamamoto, he’s stern, disciplined, powerful, and sometimes cruel head of the Gotei 13. He plays no games and doesn’t waste time with his opponents. On top of that his abilities were just cool. So when we finally got to see him fight fully and reveal his Bankai, I was excited. It was worth the wait until the end of the fight. I’ve mentioned this before and anyone that has watched anime or read manga knows that the main character must defeat the main villain. So Yamamoto could never actually kill Yhwach, in fact no one but Ichigo can.

Knowing this can undermine one’s enjoyment of a fight. You’re anticipating the moment the villain pulls something that saves them from defeat. Furthermore, Yamamoto is too strong to be challenged by anyone but Yhwach so he must be taken off the board. This leads to the unsatisfying end of this fight. Granted Yamamoto had exhausted  most of his powers, Yhwach so effortlessly defeats him it feels almost disrespectful. This problem appears again later in this arc. I don’t have a solution to this problem by the way. If Yamamoto did defeat Yhwach would that actually be better?

I was both dreading this episode and anticipating it. Despite the ending, the fight itself didn’t disappoint. Seeing it animated was exciting. The way the flames surrounded Yamamoto was epic and I loved the fluid movement. You could get a sense of his Bankai’s power through how its effect was represented throughout Soul Society. I’ll be rewatching this fight for years even if I hate how it ended. So how did you feel about this episode? Did you like the fight between Yhwach (fake) and Yamamoto? Is there a better way to use powerful secondary characters?

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 04

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 04 opens with thousands of Shinigami being slaughtered in seven minutes, Akon of the 12th Division, believes that the “Gotei 13 cannot possibly win.” The initial moments of this war is just to show the power of the Wandenreich. Most of the Shinigami that are killed aren’t important and we largely don’t know or care about them. I’ve always found the gap in power between Captains and their Lieutenants to be comically large. The exceptions of course being Lieutenants like Renji or Rukia who had Captain level abilities.

I was reminded that some of the names of the Wandenreich are uninspired, like NaNaNa Najahkoop and Bazz-B. Anyway after the weak Shinigami are killed the Wandenreich pair off with Captains. The previous mentioned NaNaNa faces off against Captain Rojuro Otoribashi, As Nodt and Mask De Masculine fights Renji and Byakuya Kuchiki, Bambietta Basterbine encounters Captain Sajin Komamura, Sui-Feng confronts BG9, and Captain Toshiro Hitsugaya meets Cang Du.

Bankai’s lost

Byakuya, who’s always serious and ready to fight at the highest level, tells Renji that “there is no reason for Renji to hold back because the Wandenreich wishes to destroy the Seireitei, which means that Renji should cut them down with everything he has got.” Renji is having difficulty penetrating Quincy’s Blut Vene but Byakuya is able to cut As Nodt’s hand. However, it’s the most damage he does as As Nodt Blut Vene becomes too strong to break through.

At this point in the arc, the Shinigami are still under the impression that the Wandenreich’s “seals” Bankai. Unfortunately, they learn that the Bankai are stolen in the worst possible way, by having their Bankai stolen. Byakuya, Komamura, Sui-Feng, and Hitsugaya all lose their Bankai to the Wandenreich’s. Rangiku Matsumoto uses Bakudo #77 to inform the remaining Shinigami that the Quincy can steal Bankai. Desperate, Akon contacts Ichigo who’s still fighting Quilge Opie. The Quincy has failed to steal Ichigo’s Bankai and has become frustrated,

Ichigo continues to dominate Opie until Urahara deals a death blow. Ichigo heads into the Garganta where Urahara explains that the Quincy have three major abilities: Vollstandig, Blut, and the Bankai stealing Medallions. Before he can explain further Opie attacks him from behind and traps Ichigo in Hueco Mundo. Prevent any rescue.

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 03

In Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War – Episode 03, Ichigo and the others are shocked how easily Quilge Opie defeated the Tres Bestias. Opie comments on the oddness of seeing a Shinigami and Arrancar together. Quilge reveals that Yhwach considers Ichigo to be a “Special War Power.” According to Yhwach, there were 5 war powers. Ichigo Kurosaki has the “Latent Ability,” Kenpachi Zaraki has “Fighting Strength,” Ichibe Hyosube has “Wisdom,” Sosuke Aizen has “Reiatsu,” and Kisuke Urahara has “means.”  These qualities are considered to be “exceptional.”

As such Ichigo must be defeated. Quilge orders his Jagdarmee to attack Ichigo. Quilge uses his Heilig Pfeil, as he confirms that they’re indeed Quincy. At the Seireitei, the Gotei 13 grapple with their old enemy the Quincy. Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi admits that he’s yet to find out where the Wandenreich are located. Back in Hueco Mundo, Ichigo prepares to battle Quilge more seriously. He gives Nel to Orihime. Ichigo assures Quilge that his Heilig Pfeil is “much stronger than Uryū’s.” Quilge doesn’t believe this is possible but he doesn’t elaborate why.

The power of Volistandig

After receiving a message from Yhwach, Quilge activates his Quincy: Volistandig. When Yhwach hears that Ichigo is in Hueco Mundo, he gets excited and orders an invasion of Soul Society. Back to the fight between Ichigo and Quilge, he shows off his powers including the ability to use Sklaverei, a basic ability to absorb Reishi. He begins absorbing the surrounding area including Orihime’s Soten Kisshun. Before he can go further he’s punched by Ayon. The Tres Bestia survived. Ayon dominates Quilge, bashing him repeatedly, causing Quincy to cough up blood.

In Karakura Town, Ishida discovers that his father is keeping secrets regarding Quincy, specifically Yhwach and his mother. At the same time, we learn from Hidetomo Kajoumaru why the conflict between Quincy and Shinigami began. When Quincy kills hollows they destroy the soul leaving nothing. This creates an imbalance of souls between Soul Society and Earth. When asked to refrain from such activities, the Quincy refused, causing the Shinigami to choose genocide.

Bazz-B blows a hole in Izuru

Quilge manages to endure the onslaught from Ayon using Blut Vene. He then uses Sklaverei to strip Ayon to the bone. He then absorbs Ayon into his body, causing two large eyes similar to Ayon’s appear on his wings. Quilge uses Sklaverei to absorb Mila Rose, Sung-Sun, Nel, Loly, Menoly, and even Sabo’s Fullbring. However, Ichigo stops him with his Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu. Meanwhile, the Wandenreich invades Soul Society through the eruptions of giant blue pillars. Bazz-B blows off Izuru Kira’s right arm and leaves a massive hole in his torso, making him Wandenreich’s first victim.

I’m indifferent to Ichigo’s battle with Quilge. As a manga reader I know the outcome of this arc, but I’ve never cared for this fight. It only serves the purpose of keeping Ishigo out of Soul Society. Regardless, I’m interested in the invasion largely because I’m assuming that it will be elaborated on (especially the fights) and I want to see this conflict animated. So what do you think? Is Ichigo’s fight pointless? Are you a manga reader? Do you think the Shingami were correct to commit genocide against the Quincy? If not, what could they have done?
