My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 16 Review: “The Chain Thus Far”

Himiko’s Sad Man Parade ravages the field at Gunga Mountain Villa, while Dabi’s blue flame burns. Uravity and Froppy float above the carnage. There heroes are understandably overwhelmed. Pixie-Bob tries to put up an Earth Wall to protect them. Uravity and Froppy reunite with Earphone Jack and Tsukuyomi. They decide that the flames are too hot and the need to “flee now that their divide and conquer strategy has failed.”

While fighting off Twice’s Doubles, Endeavor notices the fire around Dabi’s chest looks just like Shoto’s Phosphor move. He asks Dabi what happened to Shoto. Dabi says he wanted to bring him Shoto’s head, but he was too strong. He’s frustrated his dream didn’t come true, but he’s still determined to destroy everything Endeavor tries to protect. As this unfolds, All For One laughs, pleased with how everything is falling into place. He guesses Kurogiri warped himself to Tomura’s location and figures he’s now gained the far superior Warp Gate Quirk.

Endeavor’s Duty

All For One tries to use the chaos as cover to get to Tomura, but Hawks blocks him. He asks why All For One is in such a hurry to leave, even with the Rewind effect in play, realizing that he doesn’t trust Tomura’s “perfect body.” All For One admits that Hawks is right—the body isn’t complete yet, and he’s still needed to finish the process. Hawks yells to Endeavor that their divide-and-conquer plan failed, and if they don’t stop Dabi now, it’ll all come crashing down on Deku and Tomura.

All For One fires back, reminding Hawks that Endeavor’s already lost an arm and that he should be trying to stop him, not abandon his duty. But Hawks just grins and says he’s already lost to him once before. As Dabi charges at him, Endeavor thinks about his duty and how, this time, he’s truly seeing Toya.

Tomura get’s his powers back

The cause surrounding the floating U.A. causes Eraser Head and Manual to gets distracted, while Phantom Thief gets knocked to the ground ending the Erasure effect on Tomura. Suddenly, a massive explosion erupts damaging the powerline, and causing U.A. to begin falling.

Deku notices a Warp Gate forming near Tomura and quickly realizes it’s Kurogiri. He starts to wonder what went down at Central Hospital. After the explosion, Deku sees Tomura’s body starting to tear apart, like he’s shedding his skin. Then, out of nowhere, Tomura speaks to Deku directly, asking what he’d do if he said, “he’s here now.” He tells Deku they won’t be having a friendly chat at the mall since he’s his villain. That’s when Deku realizes Tomura’s original persona has resurfaced.

Gentle to the rescue

The team reports to Naomasa that U.A. is still falling and about to crash. They ask La Brava to fix it, but she says the last impact wrecked the system, and she needs to write a new program to keep the place in the air—even though there’s no time. One of the officers snaps that leaving their last line of defense to a convicted villain was a mistake, but Naomasa pushes back. He says that even though they’ve committed crimes and can’t change the past, that doesn’t mean it’s always a lost cause.

Gentle unleashes his Gently Super-Lover, releasing his Quirk to prevent U.A. from falling. He mentally asks if Deku is still fighting to protect the joy of others, just as Mandalay reports that they’ve been saved, as the air feels like some kind of trampoline. Deku hears this and realizes what happened, that Gentle is here, as the man himself thinks back to the moment when he tried to save someone from falling, and to be of service to others was his hope.

A surprising Ally

Daigoro Banjo warns Deku that even though they stopped the crash, Tomura’s on the move again. If he touches the ground, everything they did will be for nothing. Just as things are looking bad, a bullet suddenly flies in, shooting Tomura’s arm clean off. Meanwhile, Naomasa reminds everyone that, no matter how far the Villains have fallen, they’re still human. It’s up to them to remember that and, as his friend once said, deep inside, they’ll find their true selves. Down below, Lady Nagant, still recovering, steps back into the fight.
