Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2, The Divine Revolte

Right after the previous episode’s events, Frieren’s group starts planning their next move. Stark and Methode examine the slashing marks left behind by the demon. Methode believes the attacks came from a single swordsman, but Stark says that doesn’t seem right. The patterns look more like they came from someone using two swords.

Meanwhile Frieren explains to Fern that demons can hide their mana for short periods of time. Because of that the enemy is probably outside the mages’ detection range for now. Frieren also says that Genau told her about several places where demons might be hiding. The group decides those areas will be their first places to investigate.

Before they leave Frieren suggests they eat dinner. She pulls out their usual hard bread, which immediately disappoints Stark and Fern. Frieren tells them they’ll have to deal with it until the supply network in the Northern Plateau improves. Methode offers to bring Genau his share of dinner at the church, but Frieren asks her to stay and explain her thoughts about the enemy. Stark ends up taking the food instead. When Frieren asks if the demon might be a dual wielder, Methode corrects her. According to her analysis the demon is actually using four swords.

Why they don’t bury their dead

Outside the church Stark meets Genau and gives him the bread. Genau immediately points out how hard it is. Stark asks what he’s doing and Genau explains that he reinforced the church with a stronger barrier after the demons destroyed the first one. The barrier is protecting the villagers’ bodies inside.

Stark asks why the corpses are still there and even offers to help bury them. Genau realizes Stark doesn’t know the customs of the Northern Plateau. Cemeteries are rare there unless they’re heavily fortified or inside fortified towns. Normally the dead are taken to the southern end of the plateau where the Chivalric Order of the Norm handles the burials. Genau explains that shallow graves would attract monsters, turning the area into a nightmare. The Norm Company believes cremation is the most practical solution, but the clergy refuses to allow it. Genau admits that burning someone who died in agony feels cruel, but it’s something people have had to accept so the dead can rest in the land where they were born.

Are you a good person

A flashback shows Genau and Methode standing before Serie in the Continental Magic Association building. Serie reveals that Genau’s partner died in battle the other day. She orders Genau and Methode to head to the Northern Plateau and clear out demons.

Methode offers Genau a handshake so they can start off as good partners. Genau refuses. He coldly warns her about the dangers of the Northern Plateau and tells her not to get in his way. Serie notices his attitude and orders him to shake her hand.

Later, Genau feeds birds while Methode watches from behind. He suddenly asks her if she believes she’s a good person. Methode doesn’t understand what he means.

Genau explains that his previous partner was a good person—earnest, sincere, and overly friendly, the opposite of him. That partner died protecting a kid, which led to them failing to kill a quadruple-wielding demon. Genau says he would never do something so foolish and admits he’s already abandoned plenty of people in the past.

Revolte has a bad feeling

Methode asks why she was paired with him. Genau says he doesn’t know since it was Serie’s decision. The only thing he’s sure about is that first-class mages who take missions in the Northern Plateau tend to be the ones who enjoy fighting.

As the flashback ends, Genau wonders why Serie chose Methode instead of someone like Übel. In his mind, anyone who enjoys fighting can’t be a decent person. Before leaving, he tells Methode not to become like him.

Later, the group prepares to split up, but Frieren tells everyone to share information first. Methode explains that traces of mana show four demons were part of the main force that attacked the village. One of them is a demon general who fights with four weapons.

Elsewhere, a young demon reports to a four-armed serpentine demon named Revolte. He says prey has entered their trap and that the meal will have strong mana for Revolte to enjoy. The prey is a group of five: one warrior and four mages. Three of the mages are first-class. The demon asks if they should attack now since the number is manageable. Revolte refuses. He says he has a bad feeling and decides to wait until the humans split up.

Frieren and the other split up

Back with the party, Frieren suggests heading to the abandoned fortress first since demons tend to hide in places like that. Genau says he’ll catch up after the Chivalric Order of Norm arrives. Stark offers to stay behind in the village with Genau.

Frieren, Fern, and Methode travel through the forest. Frieren warns Fern not to rely too much on long-range mana detection because a skilled enemy could detect them the same way. Since the fortress is still far away, Frieren suggests they talk casually while walking. Fern thinks they’re being too relaxed, but Frieren explains that balancing tension and relaxation is important.

Soon Methode realizes the demons have already detected the mages’ mana. Frieren points out that even though the demons know the mages are strong, they still want to fight. Two demons appear—one using a katana and the other carrying a ritual staff. The staff wielder casts the fog spell Nebeladora, filling the area with thick fog that blocks both vision and mana detection.

A loud sound signals that Methode has started fighting. Frieren decides to leave the battle to Fern. Fern is confused and asks why Frieren is stepping away. Frieren reminds her that she’s a first-class mage and that this mission was designed for mages at her level. Before Fern can keep arguing, Frieren reassures her that she’ll be fine.

Fern fights alone

Right then one of the demons attacks. Fern barely manages to block it after Frieren points it out. Frieren says this is exactly why she trusted Fern with the fight. Fern insists the block was just luck and says she still feels outmatched. Frieren reassures her again and says she’s confident Fern will win.

Meanwhile, back at the campfire, Stark returns with a fish and offers Genau a late-night snack. Genau declines, saying Methode would disapprove of unhealthy food. Stark happily decides to eat it himself and asks Genau not to tell Fern.

Stark wonders if Genau knows what kind of demon attacked the village. Genau explains that demons who fight with four weapons are extremely rare. He identifies the demon as the Divine Revolte, the same one who killed his former partner.

Divine Revolte verses Stark and Genau

Stark comments that the name sounds strange. Genau explains that the name comes from magically forged weapons called Divine Cleaving Swords. These swords can change their weight at will. They’re named after a legendary weapon that once split a mountain. Genau adds that demons who forge weapons like these usually test them through needless killing, which gives the blades a heavy aura of murderous intent.

As the two sit around the campfire they suddenly sense something approaching. The Divine Revolte appears and charges straight at them. He immediately recognizes Stark as a warrior and Genau as a first-class mage. Revolte says he expected someone would stay behind to protect the village.

As Revolte attacks, Stark worries about protecting Genau and asks how he can avoid getting hit. Genau tells him to focus on dodging and not worry about him. Then Genau reminds Stark that demons aren’t the only ones capable of creating otherworldly matter with magic. With that, he casts the spell Digardnacht, Niello Wing Manipulation.
