Witch Hat Atelier – Episode 9: “A Nightmare Stained in Black”

Tartah thinks about what happened to his grandfather, but he knows the only way to understand it is to ask Qifrey. Meanwhile, Coco tries to use a wind spell to catch an apple. Her sigil is too big though, and she ends up pulling both Qifrey and the entire tree toward her.

Seeing this, Tetia shows her how to improve the spell. Agott doesn’t help and instead criticizes Tetia, saying she should be studying instead of teaching. The others don’t let that slide and quickly turn it on her, telling her to teach them too.

Later, Qifrey explains the five exams they’ll have to take. The first witches didn’t want them to feel like chores, so they made them into adventures with rewards. The group already knows the first one in the Dadah Range. There are four more, but the last is only needed if they want apprentices.

The third exam

Coco learns she has to pass the third exam to reach the Tower of Tomes. She also finds out Agott wants to become a librarian there, since it runs in her family. Richeh reacts differently and storms off, saying she only cares about making the spells she wants.

That night, Coco has a nightmare about failing to save her mother and everyone losing faith in her. She wakes up and goes back to studying. At the same time, Qifrey seals himself inside the atelier’s chimney, setting up a barrier so he can safely experiment with the Brimmed Cap’s vial.

It turns out the vial uses a lost spell created by the Righteous Witches of Healingcraft. The spell allowed them to share medicine, but for it to work each vial needed a magic medal inside. Qifrey starts to extract the medal to learn more, but that triggers a second spell. The room suddenly fills with water and he’s electrocuted.

Qifrey failed experiment

Out of nowhere, the Brimmed Cap witch appears and shatters the vial right in front of him. Then they disappear again, leaving Qifrey with no clues and no way to recover what was taken from him. The next day, he’s completely exhausted and leaves the atelier to gather leaves to restore his energy. At the same time, Coco returns Agott’s Sylph Shoes after learning how to draw the correct sigils. Instead of being grateful, Agott gets angry.

Agott asks Coco why she hasn’t blamed her for everything that’s happened and says she doesn’t understand her at all. Coco explains that the test helped her grow as a witch, but before she can finish, she collapses from exhaustion after staying up night after night studying. Agott rushes to get Qifrey, who takes Coco back to Kalhn. As they fly, he can feel her fever getting worse.

On the way, he runs into Tartah again, who helps him reach the hospital faster by showing him a shortcut. Qifrey thanks him and notes how observant he is. Tartah hesitates but says he needs to ask him something. The episode ends there, leaving us worried about what he’s going to say.
