Qifrey is excited to hear Tartah’s question, assuming it’s about magic and something he’d be happy to teach. Before Tartah can explain, a doctor interrupts them. She reveals Coco has a fever from exhaustion and scolds Qifrey, saying the adults in her life should be more responsible.
Qifrey agrees and uses a spell to cool the room, the only way he knows how to help. He then tells Tartah to save his question for later since it’s not a good time. Tartah leaves to catch the ferry but forgets his hat, leaving him unable to prove he’s a witch to get home. Later, a man arrives asking the doctors for help with a nearby fire and pulls Qifrey away to deal with it. Reluctantly, he leaves Coco alone at the hospital. Not long after, Tartah returns, unable to find his pointed cap anywhere else, and runs into Coco again.
Identify the tranquileaf
He decides to use tranquileaf to lower her fever but realizes the medicine bottles aren’t labeled. He begins to despair, believing his poor eyesight will stop him from helping her. He recalls being told in the past that he could never become a witch and would struggle even as a magic stationer.
Still, he pushes forward and tries another approach. By using a Vapor Bubble to extract the liquid from the flasks, he can isolate the powder used to make tranquileaf. He narrows it down to three flasks but still has no way to tell them apart. That’s when Coco shows him a spell that turns solid objects into powder. By reversing the signs, they can turn powder back into solid form, allowing them to identify the tranquileaf.
Tartah’s new spell
Because of a mistake in her drawing, the spell doesn’t work at first. Tartah takes a moment to think it through and figures out a solution. With the corrected spell, he finds the right flask. Coco thanks him and tells him the spell belongs to him since it only worked because of his effort.
Tartah leaves to look for more medicine in storage, but the doctor from earlier catches him and scolds him for handling medicine on his own. Still, she admits he was on the right track and praises him for trying to help Coco. After Qifrey and the other witches put out the fire, he returns to the hospital. With everything resolved and the girl recovering, they all leave the next morning.
A new Brimmed Cap
With things settled, Tartah tries to ask Qifrey and his grandfather about the light. Nolnoa doesn’t understand, and Qifrey avoids the question, leaving it unanswered. When Tartah heads home on the ferry, he calls out to Coco that he’ll carve her a pen and deliver it using his own magic. She smiles and says she’ll be waiting.
Afterward, Coco realizes she’s one step closer to helping her mother. She learns that reversing a spell’s symbols can produce the opposite effect. Elsewhere, another Brimmed Cap prepares to act. They have no visible body, only a pointed hat and cloak, showing how deeply they’ve merged with forbidden magic.
