Witch Hat Atelier – Episode 1

Witch Hat Atelier opens by asking a simple question: are people born into what they become—and if that’s true, what does that mean for witches?

We’re introduced to Coco, a young girl fascinated by magic. To her, magic is something that flows through the world, something beautiful but out of reach. She wants to be a witch, but she’s already been told that’s impossible.

Meeting Qifrey

One day, a flying chariot lands in her village. As Coco rushes to see it, she bumps into a mysterious man. At the same time, actual witches have arrived looking for a rare material. Coco’s mother tries to keep her focused on work, but Coco can’t stop thinking about the chariot. When the man casually calls her fabric-cutting “magic,” Coco immediately pushes back and starts talking about real magic instead. That gets his attention.

Coco tells him about something that happened when she was younger. Her mother once took her to a castle, where she met a witch who sold her a thin magic book and gave her a pen. The story catches the man’s interest, but before he can press her for details, a loud crash interrupts them. Some of the village kids were playing with the chariot and ended up damaging it.

Magic is real

The man offers to fix it and reveals his name is Qifrey and he’s a witch. He asks for privacy to cast the spell, and Coco offers up her mother’s shop. He tells her to guard the outside, but that doesn’t last long. After chasing the other kids away, Coco sneaks a look and sees Qifrey drawing magic with a pen. For the first time, she understands how spells actually work.

After fixing the chariot, Qifrey leaves, but he’s still thinking about Coco’s story and that magic book. Later, Coco’s mother admits she’s afraid Coco will leave her one day to chase magic. That sticks with Coco. Inspired, she pulls out the pen she got as a child and opens the book. Inside are symbols. She copies one—and it works. Just like that, Coco casts a spell.

She’s excited. Magic is real, and somehow she can use it.

The consequences of Coco’s curiousity

Even knowing there could be consequences, she keeps going. She experiments and starts to figure things out—the bigger the symbol, the stronger the effect; the cleaner the drawing, the longer it lasts. At the same time, Qifrey is trying to piece together why someone would give a magic book to a normal child. Then it clicks. He rushes back.

Coco is in the middle of drawing another symbol when Qifrey suddenly grabs her and pulls her outside before she can see what happens. Panicked, he asks Coco what kind of spell she drew. She has no clue, ignorant of the symbols and the spells they create. When her mom comes outside to find her, she begins to turn into crystal. Qifrey considers erasing Coco’s memory but realizes he needs her to find out if one of “them” gave her the spell. The only way to protect Coco and make her more useful is to turn her into a witch.
