Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 11

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 11 introduces us to some interesting Devils and Fiends. Aki meets the Future Devil, a fun devil that dances while repeating “the future rules.” Aki isn’t so jovial. He’s a stick in the mud that only wanted to “form a contract.” While disappointed, the Future Devil moves on after pointing out Aki’s bad attitude. He Future Devil tells Aki to “stick his head in his gut,” so he can tell his future and determine what he will ask Aki for. After Aki sticks his head inside the Future Devil, the devil agrees to grant Aki his power. He will live inside Aki’s right eye. Why has he agreed? Apparently, the Future Devil saw his death and it’s “epic.”

Kishibe continues to train Power and Denji. The two have made progress and will only have to train once a week instead everyday. A small victories for Power and Denji. He reminds him that they need to “keep their heads cool and not forget what weapons they have.” The next training will be against the Snake Devil and the Katana Man. Later, Kishibe meets with Makima. He reveals that he’s starting to become attached to Power and Denji and his drinking is a coping mechanism for the death of many of his students. He goes on to accuses Makima of knowing the attack was going to occur and permitting it.

Of course, Makima denies this and claims that she “wants to save as many people as possible from the devils.” Kishibe seems cold claiming that he “he don’t care about her plans or how many of his dogs die as long as she is serving mankind’s interests.” This conflicts with his drinking and affection for Denji and Power. I believe he’s lying about not caring about his students but serious about allowing Makima to operate as long as she sides with humanity. This threat also suggest that Makima isn’t human at all. The only reasonable answer is Makima is a devil. However, she has contracts with devils, so maybe she’s something else.

The Special Division and police surround Katana Man and his allies. Kishibe reveals to Division 2 the weakness of the Special Division. It’s a clever way to introduce new characters: Beam, the Shark Fiend, who has the ability to “swim” through the surface of any substance and transform his head into a shark, then there’s Galgali, the Violence Fiend, wearing a gas mask that dispenses poison, Galgali is strong, then we have my favorite Princi, the Spider Devil, she’s the creepiest one and I like that for some reason, the last devil is, Angel Devil, a strange combination. Angel Devil has the ability to drain ones life force by touch. Personally, I think the Angel Devil seems out of place in this series. I can’t figure out why.

Aki tells Power and Denji to leave the zombies to the new fiends and they should split up and find the Snake Devil and Katana Man. Aki eventually encounters Akane who summons the Snake Devil then has it spit out the Ghost Devil it decapitated in its fight against Himeno. Armed with the Future Devil’s ability to “peek,” into the future, Aki is able to avoid a direct hit from the Ghost Devil. Unfortunately, his ability to see the future is limited. He’s eventually overwhelmed by the Ghost Devil and is about to be choke to death before the episode ends. Is this the epic death the Future Devil predicted? I doubt it. But the Snake Devil’s ability to “eat” other devils is interesting.

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 10

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 10 begins when Aki wakes to find himself in a hospital room with Denji and Power reading manga. Power and Denji bicker over apples, Denji tells Power she can’t have any because she’s a “coward,” that left the battle. Aki asks “who survived from Division 4,” Denji responds Kobeni and “that guy with the glasses.” However, Denji and Power are going to meet Makima but Denji leaves an apple for Aki. I’m not sure what the apple is suppose to symbolizes in this episode but it’s a narrative tool at least for the first part. When Michiko and Yutaro enter the room, Yutaro asks if he can “have” the apple. Maybe we’ll get a payoff eventually but I thought it was interesting.

At the cemetery Makima meets Himeno’s former master Kishibe. She wants him to train Denji and Power. Kishibe makes an impact when he asks Denji and Power a series of questions: how they felt when their teammates died, if they want revenge, and if they are on human or devils side? Denji and Power are odd and to be frank selfish and respond accordingly. They say that they didn’t “think much” of their teammates death, they’re uninterested in vengeance, and they’re on the side of “whoever takes care of (Denji),” and for Power whoever is “winning.” These answer pleases Kishibe who claims that they got a perfect score. He’s excited to train them, especially because their not human.

The benefits of training

The training arc is a common arc in anime but I’ve never seen one this violent and brutal. Kishibe breaks both their necks paralyzing them. We are reminded that not only are Denji and Power not human they have the ability to heal after consuming blood. Kishibe shows off his strength and ability with a knife as he stabs Denji three times in quick succession, he then slits the throat of Power. He leaves them in a pool of their own blood. Kishibe is sadistic and I wonder what terrible thing happened to make him this way. The following day Power and Denji decide to use their intellect and defeat Kishibe. He defeats them easily but they did do better. So far two (Power and Denji) of the dumbest characters became a little more strategic. That’s progress.

The rest of the episode focused on Aki gaining a new devil contract. The Fox Devil isn’t responding to Aki’s call suggesting their contract has been voided. We get more world building when Michiko and Yutaro bring him to the basement where Public Safety keeps the devils they catch. They take him to cell 108, which houses the Future Devil. Yutaro warns him that the other two people that have contracts with this devil lost “half their lifespan,” and “their eyes, sense of taste and smell.” I wonder what Aki can sacrifice. We know he only has two years left. Also what do devils do with what they take form humans? Can they make use of eyes, fingernails, taste, or smell? Or do they just want the sacrifice?

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 9

After the last heartbreaking episode, this weeks Chainsaw Man, was always going to be highly anticipated. After the Snake Devil kills the Ghost Devil, Power flees. The last hand of the Ghost Devil pulls Denji’s cord, reviving Denji. Quickly understanding that Katana Man and Akane are the “bad guys,” and prepares to fight them. Denji is excited that he can let loose as no one cares if he carves up a villain. Akane reports the situation to her teammates and request for backup. Two regular men show up. I’m not sure why anyone thought they were going to help but they try to support Katana Man with guns.

Denji easily knocks them down and takes one hostage. The Katana Man kneels, which Denji assumes means he’s surrendering, but he uses his speed to cut both Denji and the hostage in half. I liked the fact that Denji didn’t just come in an save the day. Obviously, he’s not going to die but it’s refreshing to be unable to assume the main character will win. Katana Man takes the top half of Denji and the rest of his crew decide to leave.

The brutal power of Makima

Elsewhere, we see the result of the carnage. Hirokazu Arai, Fushi, and four others are dead, but where’s Kobeni? Makima’s train nears it’s stop and as her killers prepare to leave she appears behind them. When the train stops, Yutaro Kurose and Michiko Tendo are meet by a bloody Makima who denies the blood is hers. Inside the train all her assailants are dead. Without time to return to Tokyo, Makima orders Kurose and Tendo to find “30 convicts serving a life sentence or worse.”

As the Katana Man’s team prepare to leave they see some crows and one of them starts to feel strange. He’s crushed to death in front of Akane and the rest of the team. Panicked, she contacts Team C, who ends up begin crushed to death as well. It’s no mistake this is Makima’s doing. At the shrine, she asks one of the convicts to repeat the name; Shuzo Mishima. Makima then makes some hand gestures and the man is crushed and the convict dies. She kills all the convicts and therefore 30 of Akane’s and Katana Man’s teammates. There the only ones left.

Kobeni’s revenge

In a flashback, we see that Arai died protecting Kobeni. Enraged, she kills the murder and then pursues Akane and Katana Man. After sacrificing her nail, Akane sends the tail of the snake after Kobeni, who dodges the Snake Devil’s attack with the acrobatic skills of Spiderman. She then avoids being shot by Katana Man and cuts off his shooting hand, catches the gun, then shoots him in the back. It’s a marvelous moment for a cowardly character.

It’s still a bittersweet moment, Kobeni saves Denji but lost her closet friends Arai and Himeno. She already hated this job and plans to quit. This is another aspect of this series I like seeing, the characters quit this terrible job. It might seem simple but most characters in anime especially the weaker ones continue to fight for the “good of whatever” only to be slaughtered. In this episode, not only does Kobeni plan to quit, a new character Madoka does, and Kurose and Tendo clearly intend only to train not fight. They may not have a choice in the matter but I hope some of them survive simply because the quit hunting devils.

I’m starting to warm up to Makima’s coldness. She still manipulative and I think she knew what might happened but her attitude is appealing. Obviously, I want to know what her powers are. From this episode it seems she needs to be high up (altitude) for some reason, she needs human sacrifices, they must say the name of the target, crows appear, and she must use hand gestures. Kobeni’s abilities are also a mystery. What did she make a deal with? I’m not sure that this episode was better than the last one but it was more satisfying.

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 8

Well that was a great episode. Prior to this episode Chainsaw Man was a amazingly animated anime, with some interesting story moments, and epic action. However, I wasn’t sure what the bigger picture was. Obviously, the Gun Devil was presented as the main villain but this episode not only confirms that he’s after Denji’s heart but introduces other hunters. The first half of Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 8 is a more subdued affair.

The first part focuses on Himeno and Denji at her apartment. Himeno is trying to seduce Denji but passes out. In the morning, she and Denji have breakfast. Himeno is self aware enough to know that having sex with a minor is at least illegal as Denji informs her of the events from the previous night. They discuss Denji’s feels for Makima and she offers an alliance: she’ll help Denji with Makima if Denji helps her with Aki. As I mentioned in my review of the previous episode most anime (especially Shonen) don’t touch the topic of sex. At least not seriously. While there’s some humorous and gross aspects to this series sexual moments I think there’s more potential here.

Division 4’s get slaughtered

Makima and her assistant heads to meet with her bosses. She finds them “scary.” Subtly the men in front and behind them on the train reach down for something. The camera focuses on the unaware Makima as she stares outside the window. Suddenly, she and her assistant are shot multiple times at point blank range. To say this was a shock would be a understatement. I don’t think Makima is dead, she feel like a devil to me (its the eyes). Still this moment is shocking and had me sitting up on my seat.

Just when I thought Makima and her assistant were the only victims, the other members of the 4th Division are shot at. I say shot at because we don’t see them actually get hit with bullet which usually means they survived but with this series I’m not sure. A man in the ramen shop, interrupts Denji, Himeno, Aki, and Powers lunch. He tells them the story of his murdering Yakuza grandfather which turns out to be the man Denji use to work for and ultimately killed (after the Zombie Devil did it).

Himeno’s sacrifice

It seems that this man is under the impression that Denji is responsible. He pulls a gun and shoots Denji in the forehead, Himeno in the chest, but Aki and Power avoid getting hit. Aki uses the Fox Devil to eat the mysterious man, only for the Fox Devil to tell Aki that whatever is in her mouth it isn’t, “human, nor a devil.” Surprisingly, the man turns into a Katana Man, a cuts his way out of the Fox Devil. Aki pulls his sword out, which is a large nail, and begins attack the Katana Man with it. Each time he pierces the Katana Man, a Curse Devil counts down from three to one.

Eventually, the Curse hits “zero” and grabs the Katana Man killing him. Or at least until a mysterious young woman appears. She resurrects the Katana Man who then attacks Aki causing a wound that gushes with blood. Before he could “finish” Aki, Himeno sacrifices herself asking the Ghost Devil to help. At first it refuses claiming that the “girl is dreadful,” but when Himeno offers herself the Ghost Devil reveals itself. It process to overwhelm the Katana Man but before it gets the kill the mysterious woman summons the Snake Devil to decapitate the Ghost Devil. With the Ghost Devil defeated Aki turns to Himeno who has completely disappear except for her clothing.

This episode really opened the Chainsaw Man universe. We don’t know who the attackers are but we know that humans are also threats towards Division 4. The presence of the Katana Man means that there are others like Denji and the mysterious woman, and Aki suggests that hunters can have a variety of powers. I’m eager to see Denji fight the Katana Man. That fight will probably be different that what happens usually. However, the Katana Man seems poorly trained. Aki bested him and so did the Ghost Devil. He seems too privileged to have the type of toughness Denji has. We’ll see. I can’t wait.

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 6

Kobeni panics as Himeno investigate further. Himeno heads downstairs but she comes out from upstairs. Aki enters one of the rooms and discovers that the windows connect to room across the hall. They conclude that this must be the ability of the Devil they are hunting. The character of Kobeni takes precedence in this episode. She’s reveals that she never wanted to be a devil hunter but was forced into it by her own parents. Apparently, her brother is held in higher regard that she, and her parents wanted her to finance his education.

The world in Chainsaw Man isn’t we established yet, but we do know that civilians are directly effect (killed) by Devil. Obviously, the devils themselves are born out of human fears. As a result, Kobeni fear keeps feeding the devil. She also starts to lose her sense of reality blaming Power for creating this situation despite the fact that Power is the Blood Devil. Himeno noted in the last episode that Kobeni is a capable hunter but it’s difficult to imagine how that matters if she can’t get over her own fear.

The eternity devil

The eternity devil bursts into the hallway. A mass of heads, arms, legs, and flesh, the devil demands Denji, dead or alive. Kobeni hearing this slowly walks out of the room armed with a butchers knife. She demands Denji let the eternity devil eat him. Of course this isn’t going to happen but it’s interesting the reason Aki doesn’t want Denji dead. He needs Denji to kill the Gun Devil, which we learned earlier was responsible for killing his father, mother, and brother (and millions).

Another interest thing to note in this episode is Aki’s sword. I assumed that it was just a normal sword but apparently it’s so powerful that it could have ended this dire situation but at the expense of Aki’s well being. With Power’s weirdness, Kobeni and Hirokazu encouraging everyone else to kill Denji, and Himeno’s hesitation Aki get’s stabbed by Kobeni. Denji finally decides to do the “right” thing and “kill himself” by jumping into the eternity devil’s mouth. We know he’s going to survive but I wonder how he’ll kill the devil.

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 4

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 4 begins with Power awakens surrounded by the Bat Devils intestines. She can’t  understand why Denji rescued her considering her betrayal. He points to her chest which Power thinks is a “foolish reason,” for saving her and Meowy. Regardless, she’s grateful and will allow Denji to fondle her. Excited, Denji jumps for joy, raising his arm in triumph only for it to be blown off by the Leech Devil. With Power unable to move, Denji has no choice but to fight. However, without enough blood Denji is only able to amass a small chainsaw in his head.

Leech Devil is out for revenge over her “man,” the Bat Devil. It’s a nice characterization of the Devils who not only have personalities but intimate relationships too. We already saw with Pochita fondness of Denji, and Power’s love of Meowy that Devils are capable of affection. Still dating each other is surprising. Denji and The Leech Devil fight in another spectacular Chainsaw Man battle, but Denji never gains the upper hand. When things look most dire he’s rescued by Aki and his Fox Devil.

A not so quite slice of life

At the hospital, Aki explains how contracts with Devils work. In exchange for a part of the body of the human a devil will serve Devil Hunters. While Aki still questions Denji’s fondness for Devils or at least some of them, he offers Denji a deal. Denji agrees and Aki lies to Makima. However, she notes that Aki is more “flexible” than usual and wonders if it’s Denji’s influence. He denies he’s changed but it’s clear he has.

The second half of the episode is a glorious animated slice of life. Aki wakes in the morning, makes coffee, smokes on the balcony, makes breakfast, does chores, then prepares to make lunch. MAPPA really showed off in these scenes, making the food look real. It also characters Aki as a man with particular habits. He likes order. This order is disrupted when Power moves in and begins wreaking havoc in her new home. She has terrible eating habits, bathroom etiquette, and is generally rude. Denji hates having her there until she tells him he can cop a feel three times. Once for saving Meowy, once for killing the Bat Devil, and once for protecting her from Aki. Denji can’t contain his excitement. Hopefully it will end better than the last time.

I’m not sure how much this series can milk the fact that Denji wants to squeeze boobs. At some point he’s got to succeed right? Will he keep wanting to do it again or will he succumb to the pressure to “get serious?” Right now we’re just getting started. I wonder what the main conflict in this series will be. Devils seem too clever to just be getting slaughtered at some point they have to target Denji right?

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 3 Review

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 3 begins with the aftermath of Power’s bloody slaughter of the Sea Cucumber’s Makima tells Power that when Public Safety kills a civilian hunter’s devil they commit a crime and are usually arrested. Power’s revealed to be the Blood Devil. She can use blood as a weapon and has a tendency towards aggression. When Makima questions whether Power might not be cut out for Devil Hunting duty, she lies and tells Makima that Denji ordered her to attack. It’s not a convincing lie. Makima tells them to be quiet and work together in such a manner that it suggests she has a weird control over Power.

Rescue Meowy

While Denji gets himself a drink from the vending machine, Power encounters a cat. She tells Denji she hates humans but “enjoys only a cat’s company.” She then reveals that her pet cat Meowy was taken by a devil. Unfortunately, she was captured by Makima and hasn’t been able to rescue her cat. Using Denji’s lust for breasts, Power convinces him to help. Elsewhere, Makima meets with the higher ups. They mention that other countries have started using devils in the military. They hope that one day Japan’s only enemies will be devils. I wonder if they intend to kill off all the other humans or if they assume the other countries will leave Japan alone.

At the outskirts of the city, Power points out an isolated house where the devil is keeping Meowy. As they walk towards the house, Denji wonders if she should be so close, especially if the devil is going to use the cat against her. Power claims to have “misspoke” when she mentioned this possibility earlier. Tension arises, as the two stop. Suddenly, Power creates a blood hammer and strikes Denji as he attempts to counter with his ax. She wins. Dragging the unconscious Denji inside.

Power’s betrayal and the Bat Devil

Inside is the Bat Devil. Missing his arm, Power and him agreed she’ll bring him a human in exchange for Meowy. The Bat Devil squeezes Denji hard enough to force him to spit up blood. While Denji’s blood tastes disgusting to the Bat Devil, it’s enough to restore its arm. The Bat Devil seeks other humans to “cleanse” itself of the vile taste, specifically children. Having fulfilled her end of the bargain, Power asks for Meowy back. The Bat Devil punishes her for bringing such a bad tasting human by swallowing Meowy and its cage. He grants Power the same fate. Obviously, by swallowing both of them they’ll still be alive. It’s up to Denji to save them.

As the Bat Devil takes off towards the city, Denji latches on to its leg. Appalled, the Bat Devil tries to fling Denji off, but the latter transforms into the Chainsaw Devil and cuts off the Bat Devil’s arm. The two crash into a building and begin to fight. I’ve mentioned before the similarities between Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen, but one of the differences is how the civilians are directly affected by the conflict. In JJK, the Cursed Spirits cannot be seen by regular people and so are indirectly affected,

Bat Devil vs Chainsaw Man

During the fight between The Bat Devil and Chainsaw Man, it’s not made clear if Denji actually cares about all humans or just women. When the Bat Devil tosses a car with a man inside. Denji tosses it back claiming he doesn’t “care about dudes.” The man survives by jumping out before the car explodes in the Bat Devils’ face.

The battle between the two is unsurprisingly impressive; the animation specifically when the Bat Devil shoots a sonic shockwave, was beautifully rendered. The power system hasn’t been fully flushed out yet we got some small information. First, Chainsaw Man can retract his chainsaws at will. Secondly, Makima notes that Devils get their power from how much their names are feared. The Devil’s power scale is based on the amount of fear their name induces. Makima finds the Chainsaw Devil to be interesting for this reason and I happen to agree.

Do you think Makima has some sort of strange control over Power? Will Power learn to like humans? Just Denji? Or will she hate humans forever? Does Denji seem too forgiven? What do you think about the possibility of military based Devils. Is there a Nuclear Bomb Devil?

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 2

It’s nuts or nothing

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 2 gives us a general sense of Makima. She’s manipulative and domineering. She tells Denji that he should “only” answer her using “yes,” and “woof”. For Makima Denji is a “dog” that should be obedient otherwise he’s useless and should be “put down.” In fact Makima threatens to kill or have Denji killed a number of times in this episode. Denji’s relationship with Pochita contrasts greatly with his relationship with Makima.

Despite this, Makima is able to use Denji’s hunger and his lust to her advantage. When Denji asks “what type of guys she likes” Makima responds (in unconvincing fashion) “Denji” type guys. However, in the first episode we learned that despite Denji’s appearance and behavior he’s actually capable of making his own decisions. At least when he wants to. Right now he’s obsessed with food, boobs, and Makima.

At Devil Hunter headquarters in Tokyo, Makima introduces Denji to Aki Hayakawa, a hunter that started working three years ago. They get off to a poor start. Denji wants to work with Makima and Aki assaults Denji in an alleyway. Aki claims he’s trying to “be nice” and spare Denji from dying. He doesn’t believe Denji actually wants to fight devils and would likely get himself killed. I think he’s right.

However, Denji has different ideas. Aki gets kicked in the nuts for his violent attempt to convince Denji to quit. Personally, I found the moment to be a bit juvenile and a little funny. Plus Aki had it coming.

I don’t have any friends

The first mission Aki and Denji attempt together is one regarding a fiend. A Fiend is a devil that has possessed a human corpse. Aki wants to see Denji transform into the Chainsaw Devil but Denji just decapitates the fiend. It would have been overkill to transform and likely to frighten the cops outside. Furthermore, Denji states that he doesn’t want to make the Fiend suffer, so he gave him a painless death.

Aki finds this offensive. His entire family was killed by a devil and the police are protecting their families. To Aki, Denji isn’t taking the threat of Devils and Fiends seriously. Denji’s motivation reminds me of Tanjiro’s from Demon Slayer. He’s willing to kill them but has a soft spot for some. Tanjiro has met “good” demons like Tamayo and Denji had Pochita.

When Aki leaves, Denji admits that he “ just wanted to keep the blood away from the porn magazines on the ground.” Denji had nothing. So to him, getting to bathe daily, eat good food, and hang out with a “hot chick (Makima),” makes his life perfect. He’s a simple man. But something’s missing. A goal. Denji decides his goal is to try to touch a woman’s boobs.

My name is Power

Denji is given a partner. Her name is Power and she’s a Fiend. Makima explains that Public Safety Devil Extermination Special Division 4 is an “experimental” unit. Without results the “higher ups,” will dissolve the team resulting in Denji and Power being killed. Power is blood crazed and she’s eager to kill devils. She finally smells blood and takes off. The Sea Cucumber Devil is attacking Nerima Station. Power leaps off a building and mashes it with a hammer made from her blood and laughs while covered in its blood.

I definitely think Power is the most interesting character introduced so far. I’m intrigued by the fact she’s a Fiend. I really want to know how that happened. The power system seems to be more fluid so far. I wonder how specific and limited it becomes if it does at all. So far the Devils haven’t been too difficult to defeat. I don’t expect that to remain the standard but other than the Zombie Devil the rest don’t really stand out except for their design.

So what did you think of episode 2? Do you think Makima is as manipulative as I do? Is the humor of this series too juvenile? Are the Devil too weak? How did you like Power?

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 1 Review

Dog & Chainsaw

Chainsaw Man has been the manga series I’ve been hyped to see as an anime the most. Written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the first part of the series was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2018 to 2020. The second part of the series began this July. As of October 2022, Chainsaw Man has sold over 16 million copies.

Chainsaw Man Episode 1 Dog and Chainsaw, opens with Denji and his adorable pet chainsaw devil dog, heading to “work”. He calculates how much money he made from various “odd jobs”, 60,000 a month for cutting down trees, 1.2 million for one sold kidney, 300,000 for his right eye, less than 100,000 for one of his “nuts.” Despite this Denji still owes 38,040,000 yen. To pay off these debts Denji and Pochita hunt devils for profit.

Denji and Pochita kill the Tomato Devil off screen and are awarded 400,000 yen. However, after paying interests, a finders fee, admin fee, management costs, and bills  Denji is only left with 1,800 yen. Denji is constantly in a precarious state of poverty due to his massive debt and despite risking his life receives very little money for his efforts. His boss sees him as a compliant worker he can use but it seems like he’s mistaken.

His driver offers Denji 100 yen to eat his cigarette. It’s a moment that appears to represented Denji’s desperation and his compliance but after they leave Denji spits the cigarette out. I think we’re meant to see this as proof Denji has a mind of his own and the old man is wrong. In a flashback, we see how they meet. At Denji’s father’s grave site, the old man tells him his father’s debt now belongs to him and he should do anything possible to pay it by the next day.

Denji and Pochita’s deal

Suddenly, Pochita appears behind Denji. Injured, Pochita collapses. Denji offers it his blood in exchange for Pochita’s help. The next job they pursue is in an abandoned factory. The old man acts strangely. Denji is stabbed from behind and it’s revealed that the Yakuza have sacrificed themselves for power to the Zombie Devil. In doing so they have become his slaves and he orders them to kill Denji.

Naturally Denji tries to flee but is caught and brutally stabbed, and then he and Pochita are chopped up. We get a flashback from Pochita’s perspective. We learn that devils can take over dead bodies and Denji asks Pochita to take his body and live a normal life and have a normal death. Pochita fuses with Denji becoming his heart. In a trance-like state, Pochita tells Denji that it will give him its heart in exchange for Denji showing it his dream.

The Zombie Devil is shocked to see Denji still alive and orders the zombie to “eat him.” As the pile on top of Denji he transforms into his Chainsaw form for the first time. He chops up some zombies then launches himself at the bewildered Zombie Devil. He gouges out one of its eyes. Afraid the Devil starts tossing zombie Yakuza at Denji hoping to keep the newly formed Devil away but Denji merely hacks through them. Once he reached the Zombie Devil he sawed him in half. He then turns to the yakuza zombie, after all if they’re all dead he can’t owe them anything.

Denji joins Public Safety

The morning after, a woman and two men arrive. The young woman approaches Denji and notices that he “smells” different. As Denji’s about to pass out he tells the young woman to “hug him.” She does and he returns to his human form. She offers him two options: death or a job with Public Safety. Denji may have escaped on debt but he seems to have accepted another.

I think the hype surrounding Chainsaw Man was accurate. At first I thought it was too similar to Jujutsu Kaisen but the series might stand apart from other Shonen. Each series has its own art style and Chainsaw Man has a more grotesque feel to it. I am talking specifically about the devils. The Zombie Devil is just a floating torso with an exposed brain and organs. There’s something wrong about it but it’s still cool.

While the use of hellspawn like devils isn’t particularly new for anime and the manner in which devils come to exist is similar to Jujutsu Kaisen’s cursed spirits I always love how different writers play with the lore and their design. At the end of the day, Chainsaw Man is a Shonen anime and action is important.

The power system and fighting styles are obviously not going to be revealed in the first episode but the impression I’ve gotten is that Chainsaw Man is going more for gore. Which means a lot of blood, decapitations, and eviscerations. Chainsaw Man’s combat feels like combat found in older anime, brutal and unforgiven. Denji doesn’t seem to know how to fight like most Shonen. He just swings wildly. I like it. It remains to be seen if this remains true, but I’m loving the bloody gore this series has presented so far.

So did Chainsaw Man live up to the hype for you? What do you think of the gore? Too violent? How cute is Pochita? I didn’t mention the animation but MAPPA does it once again. Are they officially the standard for the industry? Let me know what you think. Like and Comment.

Devils introduced:

Chainsaw Man’s first trailer is out and it’s good

MAPPA has cemented itself as one of the top Japanese animation studios. Founded in 2011, MAPPA (Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association) has produced some of the most impressive anime in recent years, Yuri on Ice (2016), Banana Fish (2018), Dororo (2019), Dorohedoro (2020), Jujutsu Kaisen (2020), AOT (2020/2022), and now Chainsaw Man. The series follows Denji, a young man that becomes a Devil Hunter for the yakuza. Chainsaw Man sold 11 million copies so far and has been received well by critics and fans. The first part of Chainsaw Man ended in December 2020.

The second part of the series has already been announced and will follow Denji as he attends school while balancing being a Chainsaw man. In between the two parts will be Chainsaw Man’s anime and the expectations are high. The anticipation for this trailer was notable, with fans eagerly waiting for what MAPPA had to offer. The date of Chainsaw Man’s anime release isn’t known, but you could expect that it will premiere in October or November 2021.

It’s difficult to explain exactly why MAPPA’s animation is so amazing, but I think they have managed to blend 2D and 3D animation together. It’s hard to tell if something is 2D or not. The backgrounds are clearly 3D but they don’t feel out of place. Their animation is both detailed and simple if that makes any sense. The trailer starts off slow, with the main characters doing mundane things, like eating and going to the beach. Then the music cuts out, given way to some haunting voices in the background. Suddenly, loud music begins as the characters engage in bloody and violent battles. Chainsaw Man is going to be compared to Jujutsu Kaisen, but I think the former seems way more violent. Not that I’m complaining.
