Solo Leveling Season 1, Episode 5 Review

Sung Jinwoo has been getting the nurses excited as his constant working out has given him a hot body. The effects of his training has apparently made him taller and more attractive in the face too. His sister notices his increased height as well. Sung wonders if his muscles come from his leveling. When he checks his stats he still has 12 points to distribute to 5 stats. He decides to divide the points between strength, agility, and perception.

Sung still needs to take care of his sister and needs money for rent. So he joins a hunt with C- Ranked hunters as a baggage handler and signs a contract that stipulates that the hunters have “no liability for anything that happens inside of the dungeon.” Sung finds this suspicious in addition to the fact that they have no healer. D=Ranked, Yoo Jinho introduces himself. He’s inexperience but well equipped suggesting he comes from wealth.

Betrayal in the C-Ranked Dungeon

When the hunters first enter the dungeon there’s nothing. No magical beast, light or crystals. Sung concludes that they must be “insect type beasts.” The ants attack from above. The team of C-Ranked hunters are well coordinated and are able to handle the initial rush of ants. Sung remains concerned that they’re in danger and a bigger threat looms. Sung’s suspicions increase as they continue deep into the dungeon. When they enter the dungeon boss chamber they find a massive haul of mana crystals. When one of the hunters mention that they’ll split the haul seven ways he asks to see Sung’s contract. Which stipulates that he’ll get a cut, so they should spilt it eight ways.

At this point this episode has clearly telegraphed that the hunters are going to betray Sung. The question is how and when. One of the members of the crew, Chul-jin, claims to have left their gear elsewhere. They leave telling Sung and Yoo to stay behind in the chamber. The leader tries to use Sung and Yoo’s inexperience against them. They seal off the chamber, leaving Sung and Yoo at the mercy the boss. Sung steps up to face the massive spider and prepares to defat it alone.
