Kaiju No. 8 Episode 9 Recap: “Raid on Tachikawa Base”

At the end of the last episode another Kaiju/human hybrid appeared on the back of a flying dragon like Kaiju. It sends the remaining Kaiju hurling down towards Tachikawa Base like meteors. The Defense Force is alerted to the raid after massive explosions. Vice Captain Hoshina takes over as Mina is away from the base. He orders all hands to “prepare for combat.” Kafka is outside the base but is close enough to see the damage. He notices something strange about the “wyvern-type Kaiju.” They normally travel alone.

He relays this information to Hoshina, as the Vice Captain encounters the Kaiju/human hybrid. The Hybrid is categized as an Daikaiju class with a 8.3 fortitude. He attacks Hoshina and is impressed with the Vice-Captains abilities. He then uses a sonic scream to command the wyvern Kaiju. The Daikaiju begins to unleash a barrage of powerful attacks on Hoshina, who evades them, however, if he gets hit once he’s dead. Meanwhile, Kafka informs the rest of the Defense Force that the wyvern Kaiju have weak skin on their back to prevent them from getting too heavy.

Kaiju working together

Unfortunately, for the Defense Force the Kaiju are working together guarding their weak points. Suddenly, Kikoru appears with a massive axe and cuts one Kaiju in the stomach. In a flashback, Hoshina and Mina give Kikoru the weapon since she’s the third strongest. When another Kaiju attacks, Kikoru crushes it’s skull with her axe and her Squadron-Style Axe Technique Number One: Falling Thunder! When yet another Kaiju attacks her she switches to her second technique, Number Two: Water Skimmer.

With the help of Reno and his frozen bullets, Kikoru uses her third technique, Number Three: Half Moon. Elsewhere, Hoshina is fighting the Daikaiju alone away from the base. He wants to lure the Daikaiju into Gate 3. He orders Okonogi to open the gate. The Daikaiju complements Hoshina, claiming that other Kaiju aren’t able to keep up with him. He wants to “eat,” Hoshina and increase his strength. Hoshina skips procedure and unleashes combat power at 92%. When Minase is at the mercy of a Kaiju, Kafka uses part of his Kaiju transformation to increase his speed and rescue her. As other unit’s arrive, the tide turns in favor of the Defense Force.

Fortitude 9.0

Hoshina and the Daikaiju fight head to head, Hoshina uses his speed to run circles around the Daikaiju and attack the gaps between his exoskeleton. Hoshina attacks with his Sword-Slay technique Number Two: Cross Slasher, then Number Four: Wild Slasher, cutting off the Daikaiju other arm. Hoshina finally exposes it’s core and goes for the kill with Number Six: Eightfold Slasher. Unfortunately, he fails to kill the Daikaiju and it begins to transform into giant version of itself, with a fortitude of 9.0.

I think Kafka probably has to enter the fight against this Kaiju. He will likely have to fight alongside Vice Captain Hoshina proving that he’s on the side of humanity. Also Mina, will likely show up at some point. This episode was excellent, it had suspense, action, and everyone got a change to shine. I hope in the next few episodes we’ll get some more information on how kaiju No. 9 and what will likely be called Kaiju No. 10 came to have their powers. I also want more info on who changed Kafka and why. All of it doesn’t need to be revealed but something would be nice.

  1. This latest Kaiju is really tough, I definitely think Kafka is going to have to step in and help out the vice captain. Yeah, I’m also really curious as to why Kafka was changed like this and who is behind it. Do you think there maybe a group of good Kaiju that Kafka will meet later?

    1. I think Kafka might be the only Kaiju on the Defense Force, however, we haven’t seen all the strongest members of the force so maybe he won’t be the strongest that needs to bail everyone out all the time. I definitely think that Kafka no longer can maintain his secret. Too many people know already and the new human Kaiju are becoming too powerful for him to keep hiding.
