Top 10 Strongest Elderly Anime Characters

For the Top 10 Strongest Elderly Anime Characters lists, I’m limiting the number of characters from each series to one, for the sake of series diversity. Also my definition of elderly is age and appearance. Old characters like Alucard from Hellsing don’t qualify.

10 – Gran Torino

Series: My Hero Academia

Age: Unknown

Gran Torino also known as Sorahiko Torino is an elderly retired Pro hero and a mentor to Toshinori Yagi (All Might) and Izuku Midoriya (Deku). Despite his retirement he continues to aid the Police Force in fighting the League of Villains. When Torino was younger he was handsome and tall, however he got shorter as he aged.

Despite his age, Gran Torino remains a powerful hero. He was born with the Quirk, Jet. This Quirk allows him to increase his speed with the jet’s that shoot air from his feet. Along with speed he gains immense kicking power. However, Torino’s speed has limits. He cannot propel himself to far in the air without running out of air. Gran Torino has shown super strength, having once struck All Might so hard he vomited. Even with his advanced age he could handle a low-tier Nomu alone.

Best Battle Moment:

He decided to take a nap during the Shibuya Incident, rather than fight transfigured humans with Maki.

Like all special grade 1 sorcerers, Naobito has amazing abilities. Between Nanami, Maki, and himself, Naobito was the only one who could damage Dagon. He’s a master of hand to hand combat, able to engage in close quarters combat with opponents. Naobito can attack with quick and powerful kicks and punches. He also has a keen tactical intellect. AS the head of the Zenin family, Naobito has a massive amount of cursed energy. His inherited technique, Projection sorcery allows him to “divide one second into twenty-four frames and trace a predetermined set of movements to execute in that second.”

Bang is considered to be an exceptional fighter even among S-Class heroes. Garou has stated that “Demon-level beings like Bug God and Royal Ripper are nothing compared to his former master.” Despite being past his prime he’s still considered to be the greatest martial artists and the one of the physically strongest heroes. Bang has immense strength, speed, reflexes, durability, stamina, and endurance.

Best Battle Moment:

Owl Suppression Operation

6 – Genkai

Series: Yu Yu Hakusho

Age: Over 70

The only woman on the lists, Genkai is the master of Yusuke Urameshi and Kazuma Kuwabara. Genkai put her mind and body through training, learning to create and control her spirit wave orb. She’s pragmatic, which often comes across as being cold. Genkai’s personality is what helped her achieve her power. She isn’t without compassion however. During the Dark Tournament, she used her spiritual powers to free enslaved humans under mind control.

Genkai is one of the most powerful characters of Yu Yu Hakusho. Her age cost her some of her power but her experience remains. She substitutes her loss of strength with her tactical skills. Her eventual killer, Toguro, praised her claiming “all tactics are useless against her.” Her spirit wave uses the “body as a center for spirit energy.” This makes the human body a weapon and one could return to the time when they were the strongest. According to Genkai, the Spirit Wave grants users the ability to “healing wounds, purification, and even unleashing a massive blast of Spirit Energy powerful enough to blast apart mountains.”

Best Battle Moment:

Genkai vs Shishiwakamaru

5 – Kaiou Kaku

Kaku is considered “ruthless” and prideful in Chinese Martial Arts. When the Chinese fighters in the Raitai underperform, he slices off the hands of three Chinese Association elders. To gain his strength he “abandoned all joys of life.”

Kaku is the strongest of all Kaiou, except Yuujiro. After training for over a century there’s very little he doesn’t know about martial arts. He’s capable of slicing off limbs with a chop of his hands. Despite his age, Kaku has profound durability and stamina. His primary technique is called Shaorii. This technique produces hypoesthesia: “which allows Kaku Kaiou to absorb the whole body weight of his attacker.”

Best Battle Moment:

Kaiou Kaku vs Yuujiro Hanma

4 – Hiruzen Sarutobi

Series: Naruto

Age: 69

The Third Hokage, Sarutobi was called the “God of Shinobi.” The student of the previous Hokage, Sarutobi would go on to train the Three Sannin. Hiruzen was among the first generation of ninja produced in Konoha. Early in his training, Sarutobi was clearly a genius. He viewed all the people of Konoha as members of a family. Sarutobi was a pacifist and while some saw him as weak, he did permit Danzo to create a black-op Anbu force.

Sarutobi became Hokage at a young age and was the most powerful ninja from his generation. Like many on this list, his skills deteriorated with old age. However, he was still able to handle Oorochimaru and reincarnated version of the First and Second Hokage before dying. Oorochimaru suggested that ” had Hiruzen been ten years younger, he would’ve won.”

Best Battle Moment:

Third Hokage verses Oorochimaru

3 – Genryusai Yamamoto

Age: 2100 +

Captain-Commander Yamamoto was the captain of the 1st Division and the commander of the Gotei 13. Yamamoto values the rules and laws of Soul Society and expect that others need to do the same. A 1000 years ago Yamamoto considered himself a “monster” having caused Soul Society’s instability. He was willing to use any means to defeat his enemies. Yamamoto is the considered the most powerful swordsman in Soul Society. He was able to fight two other captains, Shunsui Kyoraku and Jushiro Ukitake, at the same time without injury. Yamamoto is a Master Swordsman, Hakuda Master, Master Strategist, and Tactician. His Zanpakuto, Ryujin Jakka, is the “greatest offensive power than all other Zanpakutō in Soul Society.”

Best Battle Moment:

Yamamoto vs Yhwach

2 – Isaac Netero

Series: Hunter X Hunter

Age: 110

Isaac Netero is the 12th Chairman of the Hunter Association and the Head of the Exam Commission. Netero was playful and occasionally absentminded. Biscuit Krueger called Netero a “twisted individual”, sometimes giving hunters “impossible” tasks. He dedicated his life to martial arts and prayer. His goal in life was to “find a worthy adversary against whom he could fight with his all.”

Morel claims “if Netero cannot defeat an opponent, then no one in the entire Hunter Association can.” Netero is capable of unleashes punches as fast as the speed of sound. His speed is considered to be greater than any other character in Hunter X Hunter. By “clasping his hands,” Netero can strike his opponents with one of his Guanyin’s hands. The whole movement takes 0.1 seconds. Netero’s 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva is his most powerful Nen ability. A single strike from bodhisattva is capable of sending Neferpitou a great distance without her being able to react. His 100-Type Guanyin also has a great deal of variety. Netero was considered to be “the world’s most powerful Nen user.”

Best Battle Moment:

Isaac vs. Meruem

1 – Whitebeard

Series: One Piece

Age: 72

Edward Newgate also known as Whitebeard. He was the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates and until his death was considered the “Strongest Man in the World.” He was an orphan and later a member of the infamous Rocks Pirates. Whitebeard would become known as one of the Four Emperors that ruled the seas. Whitebeard was so strong that he had the highest bounty of a living pirate and the second highest bounty of any pirate.

Whitebeards strength was greater than a giants. During the Summit War of Marineford, Whitebeard was able to “block a two-handed downward swing from the giant Vice Admiral John Giant with only one hand on his naginata.” He could move at incredible speeds, jump high enough to reach giants, and had tremendous pain tolerance. During the war he sustained a number of life threating injuries and continued to fight.

This doesn’t include what he could do with his devil fruit ability, Gura Gura no Mi. With it, Whitebeard could generate quakes and shockwaves. His devil fruit was considered to be the strongest in the Paramecia class. Sengoku suggested Whitebeard had the power to “destroy the world.” Whitebeard could use his power to “to shake, rupture, and tilt the landscape itself,” causing massive earthquakes and even tsunamis.

My Top 5 Demon Slaying Anime

Demon slaying is common in pop culture. They come in several varieties. The hunter who kills demons for revenge. The “chosen one,” who is born to kill demons, or the half demon that a target for full fledge demons. Family raises some demon slayers to fight demons. Specifically, demon slayers are common in anime and manga. In the last few years anime that focuses on “demon slaying” have gain prominence. So what are my top 5 demon slaying anime:

Berserk

Berserk is a little extreme for my tastes. A manga series created by Kentaro Miura, Berserk follows Guts as he fights evil spirits and demons from hell. Guts was cursed with the “Brand of Sacrifice.” As a result, ghosts and demons want to eat him. After the betrayal by his former best friend Griffith, Guts seeks venegance. Born from the womb of a hanged woman, he was raised as a child soldier. The series begins in the middle, establishing Guts character and the setting. It then flashes back revealling Guts tragic childhood.

Berserk is frequently disturbing, including child abuse, torture, sexual violence, and gore. It’s not a series for everyone, however, if you can stomach it the series explores themes like revenge, moralitiy, and coping with a cruel world. Berserk is inspired by Kaoru Kurimoto’s Guin Saga, Buronson’s Fist of the North Star, and Go Nagai’s Devilman. I don’t read the manga but I do search on Pinterest for Miura’s phenominal art work. If anything is going to attract you to this series it’s his art. Unfortunately, the anime often has terrible animation, I don’t recommend them.

Inuyasha

If your looking for a lighter series then Inuyasha is a great series. Rumiko Takahashi created the series in the 90s. The manga was serialized from 1996 to 2008 and the anime ran for seven seasons. Kagome Higurashi is a Middle School student that time travels to feudal Japan. While there she encounters youkai, ghosts, orges, and many other creatures. I really loved this series for it’s use of Japanese mythology. Kagome meets Inuyasha a teenage half-youkai.

Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikiyo, the former girlfriend of Inuyasha. She sealed Inuyasha to a sacred tree 50 years ago and it’s Kagome that frees him. Kagome and Inuyasha begin a dramatic relationship that spans time and space, as Kagome goes back and forth between this world and hers. The series follows the monster of the week structure. Kagome and Inuyasha are joined by friends, Shippo, Miroku, and Sango. Together they batlle againist the forces of Naraku, as they search for the shards of the Shikon jewel.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is the latest entry into the demon slayer anime. While technically, Yuji and his friends exorcise “cursed spirits” I consider them basically the same as demons. Written and illustrated by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen began its run in 2018. The first season of the anime began in 2020. Yuji is a high school student, when his grandfather is about to die, Yuji promises to: do good so others can die the “right” way. When Yuji meets sorcerer Megumi Fushiguro his life changes.

After releasing a cursed object that attracts cursed spirits, Yuji and Megumi rescue them. During this fight, Yuji swallows the cursed object, a finger of the “King of Curses,” Ryomen Sukuna. In doing so he becomes the new vessel of Sukuna. I’ll begin reading the manga after this seasons over, but I reccomend watching the anime. MAPPA is really starting to master their craft and Jujutsu Kaisen benefits from it.

Demon Slayer

Apparently, American audiences favor Jujutsu Kaisen over last years anime darling Demon Slayer. However, Demon Slayer continued to set records in 2020 outselling the One Piece manga and making history in the box office. I think when the Demon Slayer anime returns it will resume its run at the top. The series tells the tragic story of Tanjiro Kamado. After returning from selling charcoal, Tanjiro finds his family slaughtered and his sister Nezuko turned into a demon.

Desperate to turn his sister back and prevent others from being harmed, Tanjiro and Nezuko enbark on a quest to find a cure. Tanjiro joins the Demon Corps. Armed with a katana, the water breathing techniques, and his selfless motivation, Tanjiro battles demons. He joins forces with the dumb prettyboy Inosuke, the powerful coward Zenitsu, and the always sleeping Nezuko. Can they stop Muzan before he can eliminate the Demon Corps?

Yu Yu Hakusho

Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen maybe new demon slayer series, but Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic. A shonen fighting manga by Yoshihiro Togashi. Yu Yu Hakusho tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a cynical, smart mouthed junior high school student. One day Yusuke dies after saving a little boy from being hit by a car. This heroic act is rewarded with an opportunity to return from the dead. Koenma, the son of the King of the Dead, makes him the Spirit Detective. Yusuke hunts demons that threaten Earth. He’s sent to train with Genkai, the crotchety old master spirit user.

Yusuke, his best friend Kazuma Kuwabara, demon fox vessel Kurama, and anti-hero Hiei. Yu Yu Hakusho set the bar for anime animation, and fight choreography. I rewatch the Dark Tournament arc occasionally and still believe that it’s one of the greatest anime arc ever.

Top 5 Best Anime Couples

Personally, the romance in anime hasn’t always interested me. When I was younger I found the romance to be annoying. However, as I matured I appreciated them more. Most of these couples come from Shonen as my anime diet consists mostly of that genre. However, I think all series are in the mainstream, at least to anime fans. Anyway, let’s get to it.

Yuri and Victor dancing on social media
Yuri and Victor dancing on social media

Yuri and Victor (Yuri on Ice)

I’ll admit that I still not sure that Yuri and Victor are officially a couple. This confusing seems deliberate, as I imagine that the creators didn’t want to lean into the gay relationship. Or I could be dense. Regardless, I read them as a couple. Victor feels much older than Yuri, but he’s 28 to Yuri’s 24. At the end of season 1 of the series, Yuri and Victor are engaged. They’re a cute couple with Yuri and Victor having the opposite personalities.

Yusuke Urameshi and Keiko Yukimura (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Keiko and Yusuke are childhood friends. Having grown up together they eventually became a couple. They like Yuri and Victor are opposites. Keiko is calm, kind, and doesn’t like to use foul language. Unlike Yusuke, she was a top student. When Yusuke becomes offensive, she often scolds him. Regardless, she is always supportive of him despite his behavior. Yusuke is very protective of her like most of the people he values. At the end of the series, Yusuke and Keiko are engaged.

Inuyasha and Kagome (Inuyasha)

Inuyasha and Kagome were on the anime couple that annoyed me the most growing up. There’s a commercial mocking how often Kagome and Inuyasha call each other. This relationship leans on the will they or won’t they trope. I don’t think that you could even call them a couple through most of the series. It’s not helped by the fact that Inuyasha still loved Kikyo, even though she wanted him dead. Inuyasha is often juvenile, resulting in Kagome having to yell at him. The dynamic in this relationship is Kagome being the scold and Inuyasha being an idiot. It’s funny sometimes, but it can be a drag.

Bulma and Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z)

This relationship is the most surprising. Vegeta not only started as evil, but he also kills several of Bulma’s friends. As death is rarely permanent in Dragon Ball, I guess the emotional pain isn’t either. Regardless, they meet on Planet Namek during the Freiza Saga. During this meeting, Vegeta threatens to kill both Bulma and Krillin. So he didn’t start on a good note. The first hint that Bulma was attracted to was when she told Vegeta that he was “cute and he should lighten up a bit.” Vegeta and Bulma’s relation remains rocky despite the birth of their first child Trunks. Eventually, they got along better and married. Their relationship is the most loving during the Dragon Ball Super series. When Beerus slaps Bulma, Vegeta flies into a rage becoming stronger than Beerus for a small period. Coming from Vegeta that’s a sign of love.

Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba (Sailor Moon)

The relationship between Usagi and Mamoru was the first anime romance I was exposed to. Mamoru or Tuxedo Mask is an incarnation of Prince Endymion. He was the sole survivor of a tragic car accident that killed both his parents. The relationship starts playfully. With Mamoru calling Usagi pet names like “Bunhead”, a reference to her hairstyle. Usagi fell in love with the Tuxedo mask, not Mamoru at first. Once they got together, the two had their ups and downs. However, they eventually get married and have a daughter name Chibiusa Tsukino

Top 5 Blind Anime Characters

Fujitora and Doflamingo clash
Fujitora and Doflamingo clash

If you’re familiar with anime, action movies, or martial arts film then you probably noticed the legendary blind weapon master. Despite their inability to see they are often the most deadly fighters. Sometimes they have developed supernatural powers to compensate for their blindness or have trained to use other senses. While the audience probably expects the blind weapon master to be dangerous the characters in the story usually don’t. This results in the blind warrior being underestimated, gaining an advantage at least at first. So what are my top 5 blind characters:

5. Kaname Tosen (Bleach)

Tosen was the captain of the 9th Division of the Gotei 13. He joined Sosuke Aizen and Gin Ichimaru when they betrayed Soul Society. Tosen was blind since birth. Tosen was proficient with his Zanpakuto. As a 5th seat, he was able to fight at Captain level. After his defection, he encountered Captain Sajin Komamura and Lieutenant Shuhei Hisagi and was able to duel them both. He mastered the Shunpo, Kido, and Hikuda techniques. Like most Captain level Shinigami’s, he also mastered the Shikai and Banki abilities. Tosen develops a Resurreccion form. Ironically, Tosen gains sight in this form and it results in his downfall.

4. Uzu Sanageyama (Kill La Kill)

Uzu is one of the students on the Elite Four council. He regulates the athletic clubs at Honnoji Academy. He has his eyes sewn shut to increase his awareness. He develops a “Mind’s Eye” that allows him to form a “three-dimensional image of his surroundings, resulting in clairvoyant abilities. He’s an expert Swordsman, using a kendo style. With this style, he displays precision and reflexes. When he had access to the Three-star Goku Uniform, he possessed the Shinsoku: Senbonsuki ability which allowed him to “attaches multiple shinai blades to his hands and spins them at high speeds, allowing him to assault his opponent with a series of high-speed sword thrusts”. Uzu also developed the Blade Regalia MK 2 and the Blade Regalia: Secret Unsealed. Uzu’s self-inflicted blindness resembles the legend of Shinto God, Susano’o.

3. Yomi (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Yomi is one of the Three Kings of the Demon Realm and the main antagonist during the three Kings Saga. Yomi uses to have sight but lost it due to a plot by Kurama, he gained four extra ears to compensate. His earing was so amazing that he could “hear every word being spoken in his kingdom of Gandara”. He can hear heart rates, guessing facial expressions, and emotional states. Like Kurama, Yomi is calm, calculating, even able to use his super-hearing to measure the speeds of his opponent’s attack. Yomi possesses a Demon Absorption Wall, energy blasts, and is an upper S class demon.

2. Sara (Samurai Champloo)

A beautiful blind musician, Sara turns out to be an assassin for the Shogunate. She walks barefoot and carries a Shamisen and a Yari disguised as a walking staff. Sara has had a hard life due to her blindness. Her child was taken from her over it and is often pitied, which she hates. Sara is capable of predicting moves, her fighting ability is considered to be one of the strongest in Samurai Champloo. She could notice Sundar rocks with her Yari, her skill is so great that Kariya Kagetoki deems Mugen and Jin worthy of being defeated by him. Ultimately, Sara learns that her son was killed and she allows herself to be killed by Mugen.

1. Issho Fujitora (One Piece)

One of the new Marine Admirals, Issho is against the hashish forms of Marine justice. He hates corruption and evil. Issho intentionally blinded himself to “avoid ever seeing it again”, cutting himself leaving an X-shaped scar on his face. He regrets having done so. He hated the now-disbanded Shichibukai system and often undermines the Marines. Like many blind warriors, he’s always underestimated and he resents it. As a Marine Admiral, Fujitora is one of the strongest fighters in the World government. He was able to defeat Jack, a pirate with a billion-dollar bounty. He fought Sabo to a standstill without getting hurt, posses great strength, defense, and reflexes.

He claims to have developed heighten senses, able to “sense the movement of clouds”. Fujitora prefers to use his shikomizue (cane sword) in conjunction with his devil fruit, Zushi Zushi no Mi. With this devil fruit he can manipulate gravity, he often uses it to pull meteorites out of the sky. He can reverse gravity to repel or levitate ships. He has mastered haki, busishoku haki, and kenbushoku haki.
