My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 17: Dinner with the Todoroki’s

After the last weeks filler episode, My Hero Academia Season 5, Episode 17, “The Hellish Todoroki Family,” returns to the main narrative. Bakugo, Shoto, and Deku continue to chase after Endeavor. The number 1 hero challenged them to surpass him just once during patrol. The top three students from U.A High School are still league behind Endeavor. However, they refuse to give up. Back at the agency, Endeavor receives a phone call from his daughter, Fuyumi. She excited to hear that Todoroki and Endeavor are working together. Endeavor was an abusive father and husband. His abuse caused his wife’s breakdown and his children’s hatred. While they may resent their father, it’s clear from the reactions to Endeavor’s near fatal fight with Nomu that they still care. Endeavor is desperate to make amends. Will his sons lets him? Should they?

An Awkward dinner at the Todoroki’s

The next day, Shoto, Deku, and Bakugo are determined to “surpass” Endeavor. He tells them the more “experience you get, the more accurate you’ll be.” It’s important to observer you’re surroundings, look for evil. He argues that a hero is always looking forward. At sundown the three are exhausted. They haven’t surpassed the number 1 hero, but they are getting closer. Next, dinner at the Todoroki’s. Deku is his usual polite self and Bakugo is not. Shoto’s brother, Natsu, is in attendance. He has the most hostility toward his father. They make the meal awkward and Natsu leaves early. Despite sometimes feeling like her brother, Fuyumi thinks this is the best chance to reconcile. Shoto reveals that his mother has been writing him and has made enough progress that she can be released.

He still doesn’t know what to. Deku and Bakugo overheard the conversation. Deku is sure Todoroki is going to forgive his father because he’s “so kind.” I don’t think kindness is the issue here. The damage Endeavor has created is still being felt and until that subsides I don’t envision a change. However, spending more time with each other will likely help heal the relationship between Shoto and Endeavor. Natsu would be last as he’s the most hurt, however, he might feel pressure to forgive if his sibling both do so. Endeavor’s going to have to work harder and consistently to prove himself to his family. It still might not be enough and it will all be his fault.

The Top 3 Revelations from My Hero Academia Season 5, Episode 2

Hawks is the number 2 hero

3. Hawks is a double agent

My Hero Academia Season 5, Episode 2 doesn’t leave us in suspense long regarding whether hawks is a traitor. He isn’t. He’s a double agent for the Hero Public Safety Commission. After a failure to assess the actual strength of the enemy during the Kamino Incident, the commission hopes to gain more information. They send Hawks to ally with League of Villains to keep the Kamino Incident from recurring. Hawks Quirk makes him the most effective in espionage.

His Fierce Wings allows him to “distinguish sounds from the minute it changes in the air, allowing him to decode conversations and vocal information from sensing the vibrations.” If you include this with his intellect, he is the best choice. The question is, will the League of Villain by his deception? Dabi will most likely never trust him because he doesn’t trust heroes at all and a hero that will betray his own isn’t trustworthy at all.

2. The Todoroki Family is fractured

The abuse Enji Todoroki (Endeavor) inflicted on his family is well known by now. At this point in the series, we haven’t seen the effects on other members of the family. Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Shoto are having dinner. Fuyumi is excited to see her father, whereas Natsuo and Shoto are less excited to see him. However, Natsuo was angry at his father’s presence. He thanks his sister Fuyumi for the dinner and leaves. Enji stops him and asks him what his son is thinking?

Natsuo is upset that his father “suddenly” cares about his family. Enji deserves the ire of his son hurls towards at him. His treatment of his family was cruel and he will have to do more than just be present. Shoto for his part says that “while the hero part of Endeavor is being looked upon favorably, the father part of him needs work.” Shoto shares his brother’s skepticism but is more open-minded to reconciling.

1. Inside One For All

Deku wakes to find himself a passive witness to the birth of One For All. I have found the void within One For All to be confusing. Is Deku dreaming, is this a flashback, or does One For All induce this effect? My Hero Academia hasn’t explained how this works and I find it confusing. Regardless, Deku watches as All For One confronts his brother, the first user of One For All.

They argue over All For One’s abuse of his power, as he uses his Quirk to gain favor. He defends himself by claiming that “his actions are necessary for the growing Quirk society.” He transfers the fang Quirk of a man that was disowned by his family because it made him “ugly.” All For One gives it to a man that was attacked by a group of Quirk users. While All For One motive are terrible, he does “help” people (at least in this example) and it’s understandable he might generate loyalty in others.

My Hero Academia Chapter 274: Recap and Review

Endeavor chargers at Tomura in chapter 274 of My Hero Academia.
Endeavor chargers at Tomura

Tomura Shigaraki vs Endeavor

My Hero Academia chapter 274 opens with Endeavor attacking Tomura with his Super Move Flashfire Fist – Hell’s Curtain. He’s determined to stop Tomura from escaping. However, the fire from his super move isn’t effective. Tomura attempts to touch Endeavor, but he’s able to dodge. Endeavor notices that Tomura is regenerating at high speeds. He orders all the heroes that can move without touching the ground to create a perimeter around them.

Meanwhile, Tomura realizes that he has inherited all the Quirks that All For One collected. Tomura grabs a couple of Quirk-Destroying Drugs. He senses that something is missing, One For All. The only Quirk that his master couldn’t tame Tomura aims to track Deku down. Endeavor overhears him mention One For All so does Deku through Burnin’s radio. Using the Search Quirk stolen from Ragdoll Tomura pinpoints Deku’s location. Knowing he’s the target Deku leaves to try and draw Tomura to a more isolated location.

Tomura searches for All For One

Together with Katsuki, they head toward a deserted area. He contacts Endeavor through a private channel informing him of his plans. Chapter 274 was a rather quick one. Tomura seems erratic at this point. He may have all his masters collected Quirks but he hasn’t mastered any. Tomura and Deku mirror each other. Both have Quirk collecting abilities that have been passed down from the masters. It appears that like Midoriya’s One For All, Tomura’s All For One also allows the previous holder to speak to him. Finally, neither one has mastered any of the new abilities they have been handed. Regardless, Tomura vs Deku and Katsuki will be interesting.

My Hero Academia Chapter 268: Tomura is in danger

The cover of My Hero Academia Chapter 268

I had to read this chapter three times to figure out what happened. I found it a bit confusing. Crust is fighting High End Nomu in a tight cordoor. Eraser Head arrives and uses his Quirk to erase the Nomu’s Quirk. Present Mic gets into the fray. Meanwhile, Endeavor crushes a High-End Nomu’s head noting that it had “mulitple layers of bone.” Elsewhere, Mirko cracks the capsule that Tomura’s is recuperating in. His transformation is at 74%. She notes how she “instinctively knew she couldn’t let him wake up.” Dr. Kyudai yells for her to stop.

A High-End Nomu speculates that one of the heroes is negating it’s Quirks. It deduces that it’s Eraser Head and determines how his Quirk functions. The Nomu runs off, escaping Eraser head’s Quirk. The High-End is then able to use it’s Quirks. Using a combination of “Liquification” and “Rupture” it attacks the heroes. Keeping Endeavor’s attention, the other Nomu manages to grab Mirko. However, she uses her ‘Luna Arc’ to damage the capsule again, as Tomura reaches 75% completion. Endeavor crashes into Mirko, as she tells him to “finish em off.”

The capsule continues to crack and leak fluid. Both Eraser Head and Present Mic prepare to prevent Tomura from waking up. Obviously, Tomura will wake up. However, it seems unlikely that he will reach 100% at this point. With the amount of fighting in close quarters, it seems implausible. I found this chapter a little frustrating. Tomura’s capsule feels more durable that the others. Maybe it is, but it hasn’t been stated. This teasing might be enjoyable and intense for some but I found it annoying.
