Monkey D. Garp has been one of the most interesting characters in One Piece. This is mainly due to his relationship to Ace and Luffy, which has caused him trouble and emotional difficulties as he’s a Marine Vice Admiral, who’s grandsons were pirates. While Garp often disappeared from the series, he’s is a major figure. From the era when Gol D. Roger was the Pirate King, he has many feats to his name and has become one of the most famous Marine’s ever. Despite his loyalty to the Marines he like many has a deep hatred of the World Nobles.
Garp in the recent years ha decided to train and mentor Koby and Helmeppo. To the public he’s consider to be retired but has been training new recruits. He seems to have taken a specific liking to Koby, calling him his “beloved pupil.” Garp believes that Koby is the “future of the Marines.” Koby is one of the first people Luffy meet when he first began his journey. Ironically, it was Luffy that encouraged Koby to become a pirate in the first place.
Garp makes a big impact
When the last episode ended, Garp was approaching Hachinosu to rescue Koby from the Blackbeard Pirates. He uses his powerful punches to propel his ship in the air and then launches a devastating Galaxy Impact. He destroys the town and knocks out most of the bounty hunters. Koby prepares to leave with Garp and the others. Suddenly, Kuzan appears and freezes Hibari. Kuzan cannot allow Koby to escape while Blackbeard is away.
We get an explanation for why Kuzan joined Blackbeard. After his battle with Admiral Akainu two years ago, Kuzan left the Marines after refusing to serve under Akainu. At some point, he arrives at Hachinosu and encounters the Blackbeard Pirates on the island. He freezes several members to Blackbeard’s horror. I think that Garp is too old to defeat Kuzan but not so much so that he won’t be a threat. This will likely allow Koby and the others to escape. That said I don’t think Garp would die yet, however, Blackbeard might use Garp to lure Luffy to him.
