Dandadan Episode 9 Recap and Review

After the attack on the Serpos separates Okarun from the group, Aira checks on him but quickly turns away, flustered at the sight of him undressed. She misreads the situation, thinking he’s trying to move their relationship to the next level. Meanwhile, one of the Serpos realizes that Aira has superhuman abilities similar to Okarun’s, specifically her knack for moving through dimensional space. Seizing the opportunity, the Serpo orders the crab-headed alien to attack Aira up close while he provides backup with psychic powers from a distance.

Aira expertly dodges every punch from the crab-headed alien and counters by kicking him so hard that his head gets stuck in the ceiling. She’s ready to take on the Serpo, but he uses his psychic abilities to pin her against the wall. Gloating, he reveals his excitement at finding another human with powers to exploit. The crab-headed alien finally frees himself and lands a brutal punch, sending Aira flying through a classroom.

Before the Serpos can press their advantage, Okarun jumps in to protect Aira but is quickly overwhelmed by their Awesome Zone, which nullifies yokai powers. With Okarun incapacitated, the crab-headed alien mercilessly beats him, but Okarun manages to fight back just as Momo arrives. Her arrival changes everything—she counters the Serpos’ psychokinesis, stunning the aliens. They freeze, horrified to cross paths with her again. Momo doesn’t miss a beat, scolding Okarun for getting involved with Aira and throwing shade at the Serpos, making it clear she’s ready to settle some old scores.

Momo and Aira team up

With Momo present, the Serpos expresses frustration that their crab-headed subordinate failed to eliminate her. Okarun is thrilled to see Momo again, but she sharply tells him not to look at her while he’s still not fully dressed. Aira, annoyed that Momo had to save her, reluctantly suggests they team up to take down the Serpos. Momo is visibly shocked when Aira reveals her Acrobatic Silky form. While Aira agrees to cooperate, she pointedly refuses to give up Ken, which flusters Momo. Hearing Okarun’s real name leaves Momo so distracted that she drops her psychokinesis, allowing the Serpos to regain control and trap Okarun and Aira in their power again.

Sensing an opportunity, the Serpos injects their subordinate with a serum to boost his abilities, forcing him into a mantis shrimp-like form. The crab alien, now enhanced, unleashes devastating shockwave punches on Okarun and Aira, who are still immobilized. But Momo regains her focus, snapping at Aira not to say Okarun’s name again, and uses her psychic powers to counter the Serpos’ Awesome Zone. The Serpos quickly redirects the crab alien to attack Momo, but Okarun and Aira transform just in time to take him on. Working together, they gain the upper hand—Okarun deftly moves Aira out of the path of the crab’s lightning-fast strikes, giving her an opening to hit his weak points.

As they coordinate their attack, Momo warns them to keep their distance to avoid becoming easy targets. Aira misreads this as jealousy, but Momo denies it while Okarun casually agrees with Momo’s strategy. Unfortunately, he adds a comment that reminds Momo of Ken Takakura, breaking her concentration and disrupting her psychokinesis again. Meanwhile, the crab alien is furious to learn the Serpos plans to dock his pay for underperforming in battle.

Before the fight can continue, the water beneath them suddenly rises, flooding the void space. Momo, Okarun, and Aira surface, only to find that the walls and ceiling have also turned to water. Looking up, Momo spots the creature she encountered earlier swimming ominously above them.

Fighting underwater

Upon recognizing the creature above as Nessie, Momo and Okarun waste no time and swim for their lives after it tears apart a Serpo. Meanwhile, beneath them, the enhanced crab alien unleashes an underwater shockwave punch at Aira, slamming her into the watery ceiling and leaving her on the verge of drowning. Though the crab alien boasts that his punches pack more power underwater, he quickly reveals to Momo and Okarun that he doesn’t have gills and starts gasping for air, sinking as he begins to drown. Spotting an opportunity, Okarun shifts into his Turbo Granny form, hoping to use his enhanced leg strength to fight back. But things go sideways when he realizes Turbo Granny’s powers don’t work for swimming—he just sinks. After reverting to his normal self, he and Momo continue dodging the crab alien’s relentless attacks.

Okarun suggests a plan: he’ll distract the crab alien while Momo helps Aira. Momo, frustrated, argues with him, bringing up the awkward incident between Okarun and Aira back at school. Although Momo insists she doesn’t care, Okarun senses otherwise. He tells her to be honest about her feelings and promises to explain everything later, adding that she’s the one person he can’t bear to have misunderstand him. Their tense moment is interrupted when Okarun shields Momo from another underwater shockwave punch. Inspired, Momo devises a plan: using her powers to transform Okarun into a makeshift speedboat. Riding him, she propels them toward Aira, where she uses her powers to expel water from Aira’s lungs, saving her.

Noticing how their soaked clothes slow them down, Momo strips down to her underwear and insists Aira do the same. Aira hesitates but eventually complies. Below them, the enhanced crab alien spots what looks like a Serpo swimming nearby. Hoping for a reprieve, he’s horrified to realize it’s just a severed head, another victim of Nessie. A new Serpo then approaches, its body cables reaching out, aiming to fuse itself with both the crab alien and Nessie.

Enter Serpo Dover Demon Nessie

As Momo, Okarun, and Aira prepare to confront their enemies again, the trio spots the Serpo Dover Demon Nessie below them. Before they can react, the creature unleashes a barrage of water blasts from its mouth, forcing them into a quick retreat. When the attack finally ceases, they notice it recharging—absorbing water through its gills. Aira doesn’t wait. Using her Acrobatic Silky hair, she launches herself toward the creature with a flying kick. But the Serpo Dover Demon Nessie blocks her strike with a punch, countering with a flurry of shockwave blows. It reveals its advantage in close combat, thanks to the crab alien’s arms it has fused with. After Momo and Okarun manage to pull Aira to safety, the trio struggles to figure out how to deal with the creature. Then, inspired by Okarun’s remark about its mantis shrimp arms, Momo hatches a plan. Unfortunately, before they can act, another shockwave punch scatters them.

The Serpo Dover Demon Nessie, now focused on Momo as the greatest threat, prepares to finish her off. With its water blasts exhausted, it relies on brute force. As it strikes, Momo uses her powers to drag the water down, causing the mantis shrimp arms to rip apart. She explains that they can’t withstand the strain outside water. Furious, the creature lunges at her with its teeth and plunges into the depths to charge a final water blast, aiming to tear Momo in half. But Aira intervenes, using her Silky hair to snag the creature by the neck. Okarun seizes the opportunity, racing along Aira’s hair like a track. He splits the fused monster in two with a powerful strike and catches Momo in his arms just in time.

With the Serpo Dover Demon Nessie defeated, Momo and Okarun escape the void space, relieved to be back on solid ground. Their relief is short-lived. They quickly realize they’ve reappeared in the middle of their school hallway, stripped down to their underwear. Mortified, the three scramble to flee before anyone sees them, their embarrassment overpowering their earlier victory.

Conclusion

The potential love triangle between Okarun, Momo, and Aira is interesting. The love triangle isn’t hardly a new concept but if done correctly can be a source of humor and drama. So far, Aira actually wants Okarun, while Momo is fond of him but still treats him like a “friend.” It feels like Momo and Okarun are destined to be together but you never know. This love triangle becomes a fearsome fighting force, eventually. Their not use to fighting with each other (as a team) so the growing pains will take time to fix. That said the trio works well together. I will say I hated the green color they used for this episode.
