One Piece Chapter 940: Recap & Review

Chapter 940, The Spark of Rebellion

We learn some interesting facts. First, Law has left the Strawhat’s and Ebisu Town to save his crewmates. He was offended by the “doubt” that Shinobu had. Law now has a lack of trust now. The question is does this only apply to Shinobu or all the Strawhat’s. My best guess is that it doesn’t apply to the Strawhat’s or a least not Luffy. The reveal that Komurasaki swindled three men seem pointless other than showing how they scammed civilians. Regardless, this will probably matter later.

Meanwhile, Luffy and Hyo continue to fight in the ring. He’s largely unbothered by the opponents so he is focusing primarily on learn the new haki technique. So far he hasn’t made any progress. Hyo informs Luffy that it’s called “Ryuo” which means “flows.” Hyo tries to explain the subtly in learning the technique. There’s no way that Luffy will learn that way. Nuance is not Luffy’s thing. I like that Luffy announces that he plan’s on defeat all the Yonko’s. However, Shanks is one of them.

Does that mean that Luffy will fight him? Or is that an error on Oda’s part? Beating the Yonko doesn’t require killing them so it may not be a big deal. Of course that’s a long way away considering that Luffy is 0-2 against the two Yonko he’s faced so far, Big Mom and Kaido. In addition to that, Blackbeard has two devil fruits and his crew is going to be difficult to beat. This arc continues to build the number of former allies of Oden that are primed to aid his children and get revenge on Orochi. Finally, Big Mom and Chopper arrive. This arc’s going to get epic.

My Hero Academia Chapter 224 Review – Second Coming Festival

My Hero Academia focusing on the development of villains like they are heroes has been a notable difference from other shonen series. Most of the time all the villains are already mature adults. They certainly don’t get full arc to themselves. The “Meta Liberation Army Arc,” follows the “Joint training Arc,” where we saw the young heroes from Class A and B training together. Kohei’s also uses this opportunity to introduce and expand on the lesser know members of Class B.

The MLA Arc seems likely to do the same for the “League of Villains.” While, I feel that the introduction of the Liberation Army means more characters to remember, the conflict between villain groups is interesting. Their rivalry will likely mirror the one between Class A and B, but with far more casualties. We have already learned that the main antagonist, Tomura Shigaraki, accidentally killed his entire family. His “Decay” quirk appears to be involuntary. We also learn the creepy truth, that all the hands he wears are actually the remains of his family.

The Meta Liberation Army has it in for the League of Villains. According to their leader, ReDestro, the League of Villains are a threat to his fathers mission and must be destroyed. They have amassed a massive army of over 100,000 soldiers. The League of Villains is significantly smaller, with many of their strongest members being arrested. Regardless, the arc acts as a training one for them. Tomura in particular seems to need the training the most. All For One handed him the League he didn’t need to fight for his position. I will expect that he will emerge a far more fordable villain.

That said the villains have been shown to have more camaraderie than I would have expected. While, the villains attack each other, they actually care about their teammates. Giran, the underworld broker, had been kidnapped by the MLA and had his figures severed to get the League of Villains attention. Normally this wouldn’t matter to villains, but to see that they care like heroes would is refreshing. Chapter 224, is largely a setup for the Superpower Liberation Army’s Second Coming Festival. I expect it to be similar to the U.A. Sports Festival, but far more violent.

One Piece Chapter 934 Review – Hyogoro of the Flower

The Big Mom Pirates debate what to do. Perospero notes that Big Mom must still be alive because of her Vivre card. They assume that Kaido and his crew has taken her captive. Smoothie states that it’s unlikely to be true for their mother. In the Kuri Wastelands, Big Mom heads to Udon on a “crocoturtle that she tamed with two punches.” Big Mom seems to have lost just her memories of who she is, but not her power and her willingness to use it. Still hungry, Big Mom asks were Udon is located.

Nami, Robin, Brook, Shinobu, and Kanjuro discuss the events at Orochi’s palace. Robin says that she is “ashamed,” to have gained so little information. She then rattles off a large lists of information she did uncovered. Most importantly, Brook reveals that he found a poneglyph in the basement of the palace. However, He wasn’t able to write it down. Robin concludes that the poneglyph is at Kaido’s headquarters in Onigashuma.

Meanwhile, Sanji, Usopp, Franky, and Law are in the Flower Capital, the citizens mourn the death of Komurasaki’s. The Smart Den Den Mushi, the “smartsnail” is introduced. We learn that Kid has escaped from Udon’s prison. At the prison, Luffy is harassed by Gaoler Alpacaman who grossly spits on Luffy as he speaks. It’s unlikely that Kid escaped, as he didn’t remove his seastone handcuffs. Grandpa Hyo is assaulted by the guards, he refuse to give up his kibi dango.

Hyo reveals himself to be Hyogoro of the Flower. Luffy’s actions reminded him of ” the old days when noble men lived in Wano,” and he is now “willing to die with this fulfillment.” When Luffy sees him being attacked, he predictably charges at the guards. As he does so, Queen arrives, commenting on the noise. My first though regarding Queen’s arrival was that he and Big Mom are going to fight. We haven’t witness Big Mom fight in a full battle. I think this could be an opportunity for us to see what she’s capable of. It appears that the Strawhat’s are going to meet at the bathhouse.

I’m a little tired of the Strawhat’s being separated. I look forward to seeing them together again. This is the second so can impenetrable prison that Luffy has found himself trapped in. He will likely escape in the same way that he did in Impel Down, by inspiring the other prisoners to riot. This would probably lead to him having more support than he would normally. Also, apparently Page One wasn’t difficult for Sanji.

My Hero Academia Chapter 217 Review – New power and all for one

All Might, Izuku and Katsuki try to determine how to activate the Blackwhip quirk. He can’t seem to figure out what activated it before. Katsuki seems to believed that it requires Izuku to be in danger. Finally, in on the secrets, Katsuki asks what All Might knew about the Blackwhip quirk. He admits that both he and his master were ignorant of the fact that “One For All is capable of letting Izuku use previous wielders Quirk.”

Throughout this series it felt like Izuku was going to become exactly like All Might. Following in his footsteps as All Might is his idol. Slowly, Izuku is separating himself from his idol. Now with this new situation Izuku is coming into his own. Now traveling a path that even All Might didn’t, Izuku’s story becomes more interesting. In order to get Izuku to release his Blackwhip ability he may need to find himself in danger once again.

Eri, Izuku, Mirio and Neito gather outside the dormitories. Neito attempts to copy Eri’s Rewind Quirk. All he does is grow a horn. The horn itself is necessary to use the Quirk, but he can’t. He explains that ” as Rewind is an accumulation-type Quirk like One For All, it isn’t possible for him to use it.”

He also states “that his Quirk allows him to copy the fundamental abilities of a Quirk, not something requiring stored-up energy as he cannot copy what has already been stored. Izuku is relieved that he has this mechanism as it prevented him from being damaged by One For All when he copied during the Joint Training Battle.” Shota explains that he wanted to see if by Neito copying Eri’s quirk, she could learn to master it herself. Considering her age I think Eri will learn how to use her ability as she gets older. It’s clear that “accumulation-type” emitter quirks are the superior type of quirks.

One Piece Chapter 931 Review – O-Soba Mask, Big Mom gets amnesia

Sanji, Stealth Black

Sanji puts on the raid suit. He doesn’t believe that wearing the suit makes him apart of the Germa. In the suit he wears a black outfit with a mask concealing his face. Law recognizes the suit as a character known as Stealth Black. The character is from the comic strip, Sora, Warrior of the Sea. The suit allows Sanji to turn invisible, though he hopes Franky and Usopp will redesign it later. Anyway, Sanji attacks Page One while cloaked. Page One gets up and transforms into his hybrid form. He attacks and Sanji is knocked through several buildings, however, he has received little damage due to the Germa suit. Page One think Sanji is dead, but, Sanji floats above him hitting him with a surprise attack. Law, Usopp and Franky flee, per Sanji’s orders.

Robin and the Orochi Oniwabanshu

In the Orochi Castle, Orochi continues to party while Robin sneaks around. She finds a room and searches through the old file cabinets. Robin thinks that she could find the location of the Poneglyph. She searches for a secret entrance but is interrupted by a group of ninja’s called the Orochi Oniwabanshu. The leader of the group, Fukurokuju enters and tell her that she has “one chance” to explain herself. I’m not concern that Robin is in any real danger here. She is smart and I trust that she will come up with a convincing lie.

Big Mom forgets who she is

On Kuri, Kuri beach, Tama, Chopper, Momonosuke, and Kiku stumble upon an unconscious Big Mom. Chopper realizing who she is tries to get the group to flee. He figures that she can to get the Straw Hat pirates, he decides that he will kill her. Big Mom awakens to Choppers horror. Chopper is stunned when Big Mom asks “who am I?” It goes without saying that this is a massive chance for Chopper to get a Yonko on the Strawhat’s side. How he does it is important. Chopper being a Doctor will likely treat her amnesia, resulting in her gratitude. Despite her hatred of Luffy, she has a fondness for Brook, Sanji’s cooking and thinks Chopper is cute. If Chopper decides to manipulate her it will likely backfire on him.

One Piece Chapter 930 Review – Ebisu Town

Zoro in Ebisu Town

Zoro arrives to Ebisu Town, where he’s greeted pleasantly by the starving residents. Each of them mentions how hungry and malnourished they are while smiling. Yasu tells him that “since humans have been blessed with the gift of laughter, it would be wasteful not to use it.” They citizens mention that Ushimitsu Kozo arrived last night. Kozo is a thief that steals from the rich to give to the poor. His motives are unclear.

Big Mom arrive for Luffy

Big Mom arrives

In a surprising turn, Big Mom and her pirates arrive at Onigashima searching for Luffy. Having tied carp to her ship, they’re being pull up the waterfall. Kiado, demands that his subordinates stop them. Fearing an “All out war,” Kiado grows more fearful of Big Mom causing trouble. King arrive in the form of pteranodon using his Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon. He causes the ship of Big Mom to flip over, sending her into the sea. Obviously, Big Mom won’t meet her end her. However, being a devil fruit user she can’t swim, I wonder if her children can save her.

Big Mom falls into the sea

Sanji and his Raid Suit

In the Flower Capital, Law, Sanji, Usopp and Franky are fleeing the Beast Pirates as they try to find Sanji. Law discourages Franky from fighting sighting it’s risks. However, when a woman is under attack from Page One in his spinosaurus form. He demands that they call out to Sangoro and they do so. The civilians flee before Hawkins and Drake arrive, however, Sanji prepares to use his Raid Suit as it protects him from injury and will conceal his identity.

Oda has found a convenient way to get Sanji to use the suit that he refused to use before. It seems like Kiado’s subordinates are going to have dinosaur devil fruit abilities. Considering the vast variety of dinosaur species Kiado may have many Ancient Zoan-type devil fruit users. So far we have only seen three, X Drake, Allosaurus, Page One, Spinosaurus and King, Pteranodon. They’re all aligned with the Beast Pirates. This chapter is the rare one that didn’t feature Luffy at all. This arc does feel that it’s rushed , there’s so many characters both new and old that it can be difficult to focus. Regardless, another great chapter.

Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapter 16 Review – Ash and Dark Clouds

Natsu torches Madmorl’s and burns through his armor. Wendy now nude, is given some clothing from the spirit world. Lucy, Carla, Gray, and Happy get back together, and prepare to fight Skullion and Madmorl. Shocking everyone, Madmorl gets up after Natsu’s match. Natsu’s flames begin emitting heat, resulting in Kyria’s clothing melting. Ezra’s is unaffected because she’s wearing the “armor of the flame empress.” Kyria attacks claiming that “we’re going to eat these flames.”

Ezra isn’t phased by this and she attacks using Flame Empress’s Rising Fire Cutter. Kyria is teleported by Skullion. Natsu and the rest of Fairy Tail impress Skullion. He reveals that they are no longer interested in the Water God. They now want the White Witch, he reveals that there are more of them. Skullion then leaves, promising that they will return. Their ship dissipates into ash. The Water God Dragon awakens and tells Caramille’s to run.

The villains of the series so far are too generic. Skullion in particular has thin characterization. While it’s likely that they will get more depth, but so far their behavior is predictable. That said a guild of Dragon Eaters seem interesting. I haven’t been able to really get into this series yet. It’s only the 16th chapter, but I feel something is missing. I like reading it but not as excited for the chapter like I am for other series.

One Piece Chapter 925 Review – Blank

The chapter with Perona learning that Moriah is alive. She leaves Shikkearu Kingdom to go find him. We get to see, Gekko Moriah, Catarina Devon, Pizarro and Blackbeard (with his new beard) for the first time after the time-skip. Gekko confronts the Blackbeard Pirates, looking for Blackbeard. Shiliew of the Rain reveals that he has taken the Suke Suke no Mi from a deceased Absalom.

Catarina consumed the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Kyubi. She’s now Captain of the 6th ship in Blackbeard’s crew, with Pizarro heading the 4th. Teach is reveal to have a new look and is the first Yonko to have his bounty shown: 2,247,600,000 Belli. Teach now has the highest bounty so far in the series. He asks Moriah to join his crew, as he reveals that not only has the Revolutionary Army clashed with Fujitora and Ryokugyu over Kuma.

Meanwhile, we switch to the second act of the Wano Country Arc. Tama is fine, but Luffy has been imprisoned. Shutenmaru and Inuarashi fight briefly. Finally, we are introduced to the last two members of Kiado’s three disasters, King the Wildfire and Queen the Plague. After a week off, Oda gets right back into it. He largely skips the details, instead opting for reintroducing other characters while they explain what happened. It’s a good way to remind us of other characters and quickly get’s us back to speed on what happen in the last chapter.

Moriah has been down on his luck since Luffy beat him. I think he better join Blackbeard otherwise they’ll likely kill him and take his devil fruit. One criticism I have of Oda is his tendency to “of screen” the battles between the Revolutionary Army and their adversaries. He did it when they fought the Blackbeard Pirates and now when they fight against the Marines. I assume this is because he wants to prevent us from seeing their abilities yet.

One Piece Manga Chapter 923 Review: Kiado

This chapter went by quickly, but boy did it reveal something profound. First I was wrong about the effect of Luffy’s hit. While he managed to knock Kiado to the ground, Luffy was largely ineffective against Kiado. After he hits the ground, Lady Speed falls out of Kiado’s cape. Luffy goes to her and is told that Kiado fought Lady Speed. It is implied that he also hurt Tama.

In the One Piece series, Luffy’s most important personality traits are his simple-mindlessness and recklessness. The combination of these to aspects tend to result in Luffy getting into trouble, usually resulting in him getting a lot of attention and a higher bounty. However, Luffy is more complex than that. His sense of righteousness leads him to defend the weak, even when it will be easier for him not to.

I say all this because the moment that he finds out that Tama was hurt by Kiado, he becomes enraged. Kiado can come across as a funny character, that can lead the audience to like him, forgetting that he’s evil. I think Oda was reminding us of this fact, noting that even children aren’t safe from him. Luffy being Luffy he goes into a rage and attacks Kiado.

He calls Kiado’s attention, then attacks with Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling. He manages to knock Kiado out of his dragon form. He then quickly shifts into Gear Fourth: Boundman, using Gomu Gomu no Kong Organ. The barrage doesn’t do much as Kiado simply get’s up and uses Eight Trigrams Thunder-Clap, KOing Luffy while mocking his claim of becoming “Pirate King.”

I think Oda is trying to impart to the audience that the feeling that Luffy is so powerful that he’s the “fifth Yonko,” is completely false. While, we know that Luffy didn’t really fight Big Mom, let alone defeat her, some people (like myself) felt that the gap between him and the Yonko was close. While, I think Luffy did earn his bounty, it is somewhat inflated. Luffy has been defeated easily before and he will recover. The result of this encounter was unexpected.

If Luffy can’t touch Kiado (right now) then who can? Oh, What happened to the other Strawhat’s? So far the Strawhat’s have been on a bit of a winning streak, especially Luffy having successively defeated Doflamingo and Big Mom (though not head to head). He needed to run into a conflict that he couldn’t defeat simply by being head strong and barreling without fear. Kiado will provide a major challenge, that Luffy can’t easily overcome.

My Hero Academia Chapter 203 – Flexible! Juzo Honenuki

Endeavor attempts to contact Shoto to inform him of a new attack he wants to teach him, however, Shoto ignores his calls though. Endeavor is trying to make amends for his abusive behavior. Despite his deserving of the ire his kids have for him, I can’t help but feel sorry for him. Hopefully, Shoto will give him some chance to prove that he is better.

Meanwhile, Class A and B square off in another match. Once again Class B tries to predict the behavior of Class A. The over familiarity with Class A has really put them at a disadvantage. Juzo Honenuki takes the lead as another highly intelligent student, that was recommended to U.A. He’s able to analyze his opponents and create plans accordingly.

He deduces that Class A will ” send Shoji to scout out the current situation, and then attack with Todoroki at the center.” Class A does just what he said, assuming that they can quickly defeat Class B. Juzo’s Quirk is revealed to be “softening” he’s able to “soften anything he touches.” His quirk has no effect on living things and a second touch will revert the surface back.

Class A is taken aback regarding Juzo’s “flexibility.” Sen Kaibara Quirk’s is revealed to be “Gyrate.” He can “rotate any part of his body like a drill.” Pony Tsunotori Quirk is Horn Cannon, Horikoshi must be running out of quirk ideas. Basically, She can shoot and control up to four horns. The horns are apparently very strong. Anyway, Tetsutetsu attacks Todoroki in hand to hand combat. Tenya is trapped in the ice, when he reveals a new technique, Recipro Turbo
