Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) – Episode 25: Recap and Review

Wall: Raid on Stohess District, Part 3

I can’t tell whether this episode is suppose to be the last of the series or season, but I am hoping its the latter. This episode start on a muted note, with a prayer. The parishioners lead by Pastor Nick pray to the three “goddesses” named after the three walls. Pastor Nick states that the only ” protection from the Titans” is an “innocent heart, believing in god,”. Before he can finish the worshipers are unceremoniously killed as Annie lands on them. As Annie heads for a more strategic fighting arena Pastor Nick shouts ” Not the walls!”.

While Eren gives chase after Anne many innocent civilians are killed. Commander Nile Dawk is angered by what consequences Erwin’s plans have caused. However, Erwin is unapologetic and explains when asked “How could you do this?” that his plan was for the purpose of leading “humanity to victory”. Nile’s protest become quickly muted as he threaten to execute Erwin and is reminded that he would become Erwin’s replacement. The battle between Annie and Eren is brutal and their fighting style’s contrast. Overall, Annie is defeated but manages to encase herself in crystal. Many in the military concluded this mission a massive fail. But, Erwin and the 104th trainees squad seemed to gain greater resolve. The episode comes to a close with a titan being revealed inside the wall.

Bleach

Its been a while since my last “Anime Challenge Entry” but I’m back on it. So let’s continue. The term “fighter anime” threw me a little bit but, after a little research I got my answer. Basically it means ” Shounen anime“. Bleach is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Bleach follows the protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki.  I like the Bleach style and the structure of the fighting. The use of katana’s and kimono’s are stylistically pleasing. What set Bleach apart from other manga and anime is the Zanpakuto. Zanpakuto is the primary weapon of the Shinigami, Arrancar and Visored. The Zanpakuto posses a name which is generally known by the wielder. A Zanpakuto in its seal state appears in the form of a Japanese sword. Each sword has a unique look and series of abilities and are generated based on the Shinigami’s soul. Shikai (Initial Release) is the second form of the Zanpakuto. The second form is activated by the use of the Zanpakuto’s name. Bankai (Final Release) is the final form of a Zanpakuto. Bankai generally requires a decade to achieve and more time to master. Their are various types of Zanpakuto (fire or ice for example) and the transformation from shikai to bankai can be very interesting.

Mercy: Raid on Stohess District, Part 2

Eren being epic

This episode goes into greater detail about behind the scene plan that we witnessed in the previous episode. The situation continues to escalate as Annie traps Mikasa, Armin and Eren in an underground tunnel. Eren finds himself to be incapable of transforming. This seems to be due to the fact that he has “reservations about fighting Annie” as Mikasa put it. I thought it was interesting that Misaka acknowledge the resemblance between Annie and the female titan.

Armin comes up with a plan to force Annie into a choice that would allow Eren to escape. Commander Nile Dok accuses Erwin of treason and pulls a gun on him. The recon corps along with Mikasa attempt to distract and capture Annie. Armin and Jean attempt to free Eren from the rubble but instead decided to join in the distraction of Annie. I find it odd that both Jean and Armin (especially Armin) were so willing to abandon Eren who at this point was impaled. Armin succeeded in trapping Annie with the help of recon corps. Hanji continues to add comic relief to this series and manages to never feel out of place. The traps failed and Annie continued her rampage. The best part of this episode was Eren’s transformation. The detail of Eren’s face (and the blood) was impressive.

Smile: Raid on Stohess District, Part 1

Annie having a tradition anime (I’m evil) laugh

All about Annie. I was right the female titan is Annie (not that this matters), but I feel good about myself. This episode featured no action and somehow I felt like it did. The episode had slow pacing but, it was very effective in setting the tone. This episode seemed to be designed to explain Annie and her motivation.  The complexity of the characters were shown in this episode. Annie’s view on humanity, Marlow’s attempt to end corruption and Armin’s hope that he was wrong about Annie. Armin show’s of his intellect once again but it wasn’t enough to fool Annie.

Eren shows his naive mindset when he seems unwilling to believe that Annie is a titan. Mikasa being bad ass was having none of it. She was ready, willing and able to put Annie down. I had to watch this episode twice to get all the little details (like the ring). Overall, this episode showed why Attack on Titan is an unbelievably good anime. So did you think Annie was the Titan? Where you impressed by Armin’s intellect? What about Annie’s philosophy on humanity? Does she make any sense?

Donquixote Doflamingo

Donquixote Doflamingo is a member of the Shickibukai in One Piece. He’s captain of the Doflamingo pirates and King of Dressrosa. Under the alias “Joker” he’s an underground broker. His bounty reached 340 million beli before he became a shickibukai. For most of the first half of the series he remain mysterious, but he’s since become the focus of the series. Donquixote’s abilities haven’t been clearly defined yet however, it seems to be that it was related to strings in some way.

What makes Donquixote such a good anime villian is his seeming sadistic nature. Donquixote has a rather carefree personality on the surface and he appears to be completely fearless. He generally gleeful when being cruel to his opponents. His string ability has a puppeteer effect, and he seems to enjoy pitting comrades against each other. He shows glee at the death and mayhem during the war. He loved killing Gekko Moriah (even though he failed), he had no issue selling slaves. Despite his appearance Donquixote Doflamingo is clearly a man without much morals and his cruelty know no bounds.
