30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 1

While checking out the blog lazyusagi.wordpress.com I read her latest post. So I decided to join in on the challenge.

The Very First Anime You Watched

Sailor Moon. Like most Americans I was exposed to only a handful of anime as a child. Most anime came on too early in the morning for me to watch (5:00am to be exact) so I could only catch “Sailor Moon”. For those who are unaware sailor moon is an anime about 14 year old girl named Usagi Tsukino (Serena in America). She meets a cat named Luna. Luna tells her that she is magical warrior with the destiny to save the earth from evil. As the series progresses Serena and Luna search for the other Moon princesses. They find Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter among others. The story is decided into five arcs.

  1. The Dark Kingdom Arc (Sailor Moon)
  2. The Black Moon Arc (Sailor Moon R)
  3. The Infinity Arc (Sailor Moon S)
  4. The Dream Arc (Sailor Moon SuperS)
  5. The Stars Arc (Sailor Stars)

I loved Sailor Moon. It featured love, action, and humor. My favorite character is Serena she’s the most entertaining.

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) – Episode 20: Recap and Review

Erwin Smith: 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls, Part 4

Titans_reach_the_Female_Titan

Another week another EPIC Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan never seems to disappoint me. This episode featured everything that makes this series great. The episode featured good animation, action, mystery, intrigued, tension and a plot twist. We learn a little bit about the female titans abilities. She has the ability to harden her skin much like the armored titan. With a primal scream she seems to have the ability to command lesser minded titans. Commander Erwin suspected that someone in the rookie class is helping the titans or is the female titan.

It was also revealed that the spy is most likely responsible for killing sonny and bean. Armin explains the commanders shrewd mindset and his willingness to sacrifice soldiers for the greater good. He explains that “anyone who can’t sacrifice anything, can’t ever change anything”. The episode ends with Gunter’s brutal death at the hands of the “traitor”. For some reason I found it worst for the traitor to kill a solider while human as opposed to doing so while in titan form. So what do you think was the episode well balanced ? How do you feel about Commander Erwin’s willingness to sacrifice? Have figured out who the female titan is?

Forest of Giant Trees: 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls, Part 2

The_Female_Titan_in_action

Continuing from where the last episode left off Armin, Reiner and Jean are left with only one horse as the female titan heads towards Eren. They’re rescued by Christa who has several horses with her. Much like the previous episode the “Female Titan” was the highlight of this episode. The Female Titan engages in battle with four soldiers. They attempt to attack simultaneously expecting that even an intelligent Titan couldn’t counter. She jumps crushing two of the soldiers. The most jarring kill comes when she kills the third solider by spinning him by his wire.

The fourth solider attempts to escape to no avail she quickly kills him. Who ever this Titan is her cruelty seems to give her great pleasure. The female titan maintains her chase as Eren under the command of Levi head into the forest. As the Female titan gains on Eren’s group they are ordered to draw their weapons. The female titan continues her brutal massacre of the soldiers smashing one into a tree. At the end Levi seems to have a plan as he shoots into the air.

Bite: 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls, Part 3

This episode featured less action than the previous two, however some light was shed on how Titans (Eren) transforms. Eren begins to questioning Levi decision or lack there off. Eren struggles weather he should transform or not. A flash back is triggered, Eren remembers his previous time with Levi’s squad. Levi clams to have figured a way to stop Eren without killing him. Hanji takes center stage in this episode. I like her as a character she fitting the mad scientist archetype well. Hanji manages to be funny and a little scary at the same time. She gets permission to do experiment with or on Eren, but he seems willing. Her first experiment is to have Eren transform in a dried up well. However, this experiment completely fails leaving Eren with a series of bloody bite marks.

Later Eren drops a teaspoon when he touches it he instantly transforms. Hanji while ecstatic notices that the titan armed that formed was holding the teaspoon. Hanji concludes that “Eren must have a clear goal in mind, as he always had each time he transformed”. Back in the present Eren finally decides trust his squad, at this moment the Female titan begins to accelerate. Irvin gives a command and she is trapped. While this episode didn’t feature a great deal of action it did add intrigue to the story. So do you think Hanji is correct? What do you think of Hanji as a character? Who do you think the Female Titan is?

Simply EPIC. This episode was amazing and definitely the best yet. I found the flare formation to be interesting although it didn’t seem to work in the episodes. The episode had suspense due to the fact that were exposed in the open field. Sasha’s encounter with the crawling titan manage to be both frightening and humorous. But enough about that the female titan was the most important aspect of the show. Female titans are not new but this titan is clearly different.  The intellect of the female titan is instantly made clear when she blocks her weakness. She’s fast and brutal which was displayed when she killed Ness and Cis . Armin’s attempt to get away made feel for his predicament.

Armin being such an important character I wasn’t surprised that she didn’t kill. However, the manner of there encounter did surprise me. It was clear that she looked at his face to see who he was (which leaves me to believe she knows who he is). Armin gets to show off his analytical mind in this episode. He deduced that like all the other intelligent titans she must be a human in titan form like Eren. The ending was finished with a flourish Reiner surprisingly surviving being caught by the female titan.

As for my theory for who the titan is probably “Annie“. The female titan has blonde hair and blue eyes ( I know Historia Reiss has the same character traits). Historia does seem to have the appropriate personality or fighting skills to be the titan. In addition to this she joined the scouting legion, I doubt she could get away and transform without getting noticed. Furthermore, Annie joined the military police giving her plenty of opportunity. In addition to this she seem to have some animosity toward humanity. I know that the manga is ahead so maybe the female titan has already been revealed but I won’t cheat. So what do you think of this episode. Is it the best episode yet? Does my theory make sense? Is the next episode better?

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) – Episode 05 – 16: Recap and Review

Anime Binge : Episode 05 – 16

Shingeki-no-Kyojin-shingeki-no-kyojin-attack-on-titan-34357634-1280-720

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) is clearly the best anime to be released in years. I tried to pace myself (one a week) but failed completely. It would take way to long to give my opinion on each episode so I’ll give my general opinion on the series. First I would say that “Attack on Titan” features a good variety of characters with different levels of skill. Many character are well written and reasonably well rounded. The overall tone remains consistently dire. While some of the episodes feature little or no action I felt that these lulls contribute to the suspense of when the next attack will occur.

Animation quality remains constantly high. The story keeps me excited to see what happens next week (and who dies). There’s still exists a great deal of mystery regarding what drives the titans which keeps me intrigued. I still need to watch two more episodes to get on track. I can’t wait. So have you every “binged” on anime? Do you like the tone of Attack on Titan? Any ideas why the Titan attack humans? How they might reproduce? Are all the seeming intelligent “Titans” shifters like Eren?
