Chapter 281 – Plus Ultra
At the end of Chapter 280, we saw that Tomura Shigaraki had been defeated by the Heroes. He opens this chapter by telling the heroes that he believes that “only been pretending to protect society.” He blames them for the destruction that results from the “recklessness of Hero Society.” Endeavor attacks him but Tomura is still able to move. Gran Torino quickly pounces on Tomura, smashing his head into the ground. Tomura swings at Torino but misses. However, he pushes himself off the ground, grabbing Gran Torino’s leg drawing blood. Sensing the danger, Deku, Endeavor, and Bakugo charge.
However, they’re too late. As Gran Torino witnesses the warped face of Tomura he recalls that when Nana Shimura left her son at foster care she deliberately altered the family registry so All For One wouldn’t find him. This failed, and Gran Torino wonders if Nana abandoning her son was the right decision. Unfortunately, Tomura punches Gran Torino through the chest killing him instantly. Heartbroken, Deku charges at Tomura. However, Tomura increases his speed and speeds past them toward Eraser head. He is stopped by Ryukyu. Tomura begins to realize that he’s running out of stamina.

Deku grabs Tomura with his Blackwhip, proclaiming that he will “never forgive him.” Tomura elbows Deku in the stomach, forcing him to spit up blood. Deku maintains his composure by “turn his rage into strength.” As Endeavor charges looking for one more shot, Tomura grabs the Quirk-Destroying Drug, aiming for Eraser Head. The chapter ends with an image of Eri from Christmas. This chapter proved me right. I predicted that someone close to Deku would get killed by Tomura and Gran Torino was one of the likely targets. As I argued in the past that to make Deku take the next step he needed to experience tragedy.
Regardless, Gran Torino’s death was still shocking. This moment sets a different tone for a series that rarely gets dark. Tomura and All For One are spreading their negativity throughout the world. Another prediction I had was Tomura using the Quirk-Destroying Drug on someone, but Eraser Head seems like the obvious choice. The consequence of Tomura regaining his powers seems likely to be devastating. The heroes were barely able to stop Tomura without his powers, with them they have no chance. For this reason, I think that someone else will lose their Quirk. However, Eri may make an appearance.
