As I’ve written before I’m rather lukewarm on the Fairy Tail series. It was confirm a while ago that a sequel to Fairy Tail will be illustrated by Atsuo Ueda with storyboards by Hiro Mashima. The sequel takes place directly after the events of the original. After defeating, Acnologia and Zeref the Fairy Tail guild is better than ever. The chapter begins in the year X633, an elderly man stand among corpses of a village as he states that “magic is not evil and that wizards must come together as one.” This day marked the day that first wizarding guild was established.
In the present, Max introduces 3 new members to Fairy Tail. Only one manages to remain as Laxus scares two of them off. The remaining member is Touka, she claims that she wants to “be in the same guild as Natsu.” She claims that he’s her “darling sweetheart,” stunning everyone. Natsu apparently rescued her from bandit’s a year prior. Makarov explains that Natsu wasn’t presence because he was attempting to fulfill the “Hundred Year Quest.”
The Fairy Tail universe is expanded as we see Team Natsu on the continent of Giltena. They arrive at the “world oldest guild,” Magia Dragon. While in the building Natsu and Wendy start to feel the presence of a dragon. This dragon introduces himself as “the Law Dragon Elefseria,” he asks them to fulfill there wishes. Fairy Tail has always been a rather ordinary manga, likable and well drawn the series didn’t really move the shonen genre forward. Fairy Tail doesn’t need to do this to be good, however, being so predictable can be disappointing.
The art-style of Atsuo Ueda is pretty good. It is very similar to that of Hiro Mashima, although the characters do feel more mature, detailed and taller. I don’t know what to expect from this series considering that Ueda is different from Mashima. Like Eden Zero, I don’t expect Fairy Tail 100 Year’s Quest to be much different. Furthermore, Fairy Tail has seen multiple spin-off’s that varied in length, I wonder how long this manga series will be. A series centered around one quest no matter how difficult probably won’t be 500 chapters long.
