On July 6th, Vinland Saga will debut on streaming services. The series is set to have a 24 episode season. Based on Makoto Yukimura’s manga series of the same name, Vinland follows the historical periods depicted in the two saga’s from Iceland, The Saga of the Greenlanders and the Saga of Eric the Red. The story mostly recounts the rise of King Cnut the Great.
Wit Studio (Attack on Titan) will animate the series. Directed by Shuhei Yabuta (Director, Inuyashiki Last Hero) and written by Hiroshi Seko (Banana Fish) and Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil), the series will be streamed on Amazon Prime. The series is often compared favorably to Berserk and has been praised for its “fluid action sequences,” “realistic violence,” and “attention to detail.”
Dr. Stone, the manga by Riichirou Inagaki and Boichi’s will debut it’s anime adaptation in July. Launched in March 2017, the series focuses on Taiju and Senku as they awaken from being trapped in stone. They begin to “rebuild civilization” using the science knowledge of Senku. They create a means to destroy the “stone casing” called nital. In a moment of distress they release Tsukasa Shishio, “Strongest Primate High Schooler.” He, Senku and Taiju have a disagreement regarding who should be revived. Take revenge. Restore your honor. Kill Ingeniously.
Developed by FromSoftware (Soul series) and published by Activison, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure game that will be released on the PS4 and XBox One next week. You play as a shinobi named Sekiro as he attempts to rescue his lord that was kidnapped by a samurai. The gameplay of Sekiro is what’s interesting. Strategy is key. You need to use different tactics against a variety of enemies. These enemies can use what is called a “perilous attack” they can’t be blocked. You have to decided, counter or retreat and prepare for a follow up attack.
After his defeat the “wolf (main character)” receives a prosthetic arm. This arm can be used to break shields, throw shuriken, deflect attacks, etc … You can use stealth as well. If you can go undetected it will allow you eliminate enemies quickly. Death is likely, but you can resurrect yourself. However, you will be vulnerable when you do. Winning battles will be how your character progresses. The game was based on the Tenchu series. The good news is that this game focuses on single-player instead of tacking on multi-player. However, FromSoftware created the difficult (in my opinion) Soul and Bloodborne series and it seems like the Sekiro will be taxing as well.
Shenmue 3 is due to be released on August 27th this year. Slated for the PC and PS4, the series first appeared on the Dreamcast in 2000. The sequel was released the following year and was always intended to be a trilogy. Shenmue was created, produced, and directed by Yu Suzuki. The series featured open world elements before open world became so popular. It also was responsible for the introduction of the “quick time events.” The story follows Ryo Hazuki, a teenage martial artist who’s father is murdered.
The original Shenmue once was the “most expensive video game ever developed,” and despite the cult following and critical acclaim it was a commercial failure. After having a successful crowdfunding campaign, becoming the “fastest-funded and the highest-funded video game project in Kickstarter history, earning $6.3 million.” Shenmue 3 began production. During the MAGIC 2019, Yu Suzuki presented the trailer.
The trailer shows several characters in the next game, particularity Ryo. While, I excited for this game, it doesn’t look great graphically. Ryo and the other characters are not that realistic and their moment seems rather wooden. However, the series is known for it’s detail, with Suzuki claiming that there’s over 400 NPC’s in the game. Suzuki claims that the shops in the game will be more in-depth. I’ll admit that sometimes the details in this series was tedious, but if they sacrifice some graphic for the detail I’m fine with that.
Like many fans of the Pokemon series I was waiting to see what the next generation of Pokemon games would look like. When the Switch was revealed to be both a home console and a handheld one, it was easy to predict that the next Pokemon game would be on the Switch. Unlike, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee, this game will be the “real” Pokemon RPG’s.
Each Pokemon region is inspired by a real place, this time it’s seems to be Great Britain. The brand new region is called Galar. The three new starter Pokemon were revealed: the Grass-type chimp Grookey, the Fire-type rabbit Scorbunny, and the Water-type lizard Sobble. As always random encounters are back, as are Gym’s (Pokemon Sun and Moon changed that format). The trailer didn’t confirm whether character customization, but I’m hoping.
So far their doesn’t seem to be anything new to the series yet, but details on possible new elements could emerge later. With the introduction of every new generation, we tend to get a lot of new Pokemon. Anyway, I can’t wait. Pokemon Sword & Shield will be released later this year.

Yuki Yase at David Production (JoJo’s Bizarre, Cells at Work!) will be handling the direction for the series. Yamato Haishima will be handling the scripts, with Hideyuki Morioka doing the design for the characters.
Fire Force is a manga series that’s was created by Atsushi Okubo, published by Kodansha and serialized in the Weekly Shonen Magazine. Fire Force is set in a world where human ” spontaneously ignite and turn into flaming demon-like creatures, a disease most feared and known by the name “Human Body Ignition Phenomenon”. The series focuses on Shinra Kusakabe, who joins the Special Fire Force Company 8 to fight the Flame Humans.
I wrote an introduction to the series back in 2015, here. Despite likely Okubo’s art style I wasn’t able to maintain my interest in the manga, however, sometimes the anime is more enjoyable than the manga or vice versa. Regardless, I’m gonna give the anime a chance. It’s looks good:
