We are introduced to a new threat in the form of a group called Kara. They mention contingency plans regarding the lost of their “vessel.” They bicker back and forth over what to do next and conclude that they need to “retrieve the vessel at all costs.” After they disperse, the eldest member of Kara is killed, by another, with the “true flames of samadhi.”
Compared to Naruto’s Akatsuki, the revealing of Kara was quick. Boruto seems to be avoiding the slower burn of that series. However, none of the genin in Boruto seem strong enough to defeat any of them. I predict that this is just an introduction of Kara and they will disappear for a while as the genin gain enough strength to face them.
Naruto vs Boruto
Naruto faces-off against Boruto in front of a crowd, Boruto starts of with several shadow clones, aimed to distract Naruto and get behind him. Boruto throws a rasengan at Naruto, it appears that he absorbs the rasengan. Boruto then uses, Water Style: Billowing Wave in combination with Thunderclap Arrow, Naruto responds by using Earth Style: Flowing earth wall, blocking his attack.
Naruto then punches his fist through the wall and absorbs Boruto’s attack. He then appears behind Boruto without the hand, attacking Boruto, knocking him to the ground ending the duel. At the offices of the Hokage, Boruto berates Naruto for using ninja tech. The tech is designed to emulate the ability of Ootsutsuki, absorbing attack, however, without the ability to release the jutsu. Sasuke states that it’s not cheating, and what matters is how you use the tech. Finally, Konohamaru investigates a wreckage and is in danger from an unknown assailant.
This chapter was largely predictable, Boruto wins. However, what I predicted was someone would come to the aid of Boruto, I was wrong on that front. I have often decried the abandonment of strategy of the later Naruto chapters and early Boruto chapters, this chapter did add some nuance to battle.
However, none of the jutsu seem to need hand signs anymore. Boruto did surprise me with his use of “Uchiha-Ryuu Shuriken Jutsu,” with lightning infused chakra. The attack is ineffective against Shojoji’s, Wind release – wind count’s shield which counter’s any attack he’s aware of.
What if find disappointing about this series so far is that the character progression is too fast. When did he learn, Shuriken Jutsu, Chakra infusion, and Normal Rasengan. Considering that Naruto took several chapters to learn both the Rasengan and then the wind infusion his son miles ahead of him. I think this is probably due to the monthly schedule for the series that makes it impossible to go in-depth into their training.
While, the fight wasn’t the most impressive, it was entertaining. However, with the next chapter coming in August it is becoming frustrating to have to wait. Finally, with the Boruto anime series being weekly it seem plausible that it will fill in the blanks so to speak. That said some of the anime episodes do feel like they are filler episodes.
Boruto, Sarada, and Misuki are given a B Rank mission, Misuki reminds them that Gaara was doing B-Rank missions when he was a genin. Sarada and Boruto are excited that she could walk in the path of a Kazekage. Until this point there is no real evidence that they are this good, but I guess we will get to see what they’re capable of.
Boruto remembers Tentou
Boruto finds the rare card that Tentou hid in his pocket. He is surprise that Tentou gave him the card after he refused it. Boruto aims to return the card to him and goes to his hotel. He overhears that Tentou has been kidnapped. The mujina are responsible and they demand 500 million ryou for Tentou’s return. They also want all the prisoners from “Hoozuki Castle,” to be released.
Boruto goes at it alone
Sarada is practicing her aiming, meanwhile, Boruto arrives to inform her that he will be unable to make the mission. Sarada accepts that he can’t tell her what he’s up to and he goes to save Tentou. The leader of the mujina, Shojoji, reveals that Yamaoka was killed a long time ago. He explains how Shikabane Bunshin no jutsu, is a forbidden technique that devour and take in the form, memories abilities and their life. Tentou uses the shuriken to try to kill himself, it ends the way it is expected to with Tentou being defeated. Shojoji attempts to eat Tentou’s brain and Boruto kicks him in the face hard. Boruto aims to take Shojoji by himself.
There’s been a lot of criticism of Sarada appearance, basically she’s dressed like a 20 year old, but is only 12. I agree, I don’t understand why it’s necessary to dress her in skimpy clothing, it’s creepy. Another criticism is of the art style, I had some criticism in the begin but have come to actual like it. Manga artist often get better, as the series goes on (see Bleach) and I think it’s also relative unique style. As for the chapter there’s now way Boruto has the ability to defeat Shojoji. Unlike his father who was often saved by the nine-tails, Boruto lacks this ability. Most likely, he will be saved by Misuki and Sarada, we’ll get to see how good they are and most likely accomplish a mission higher rank mission.
Charlotte Linlin aka Big Mom, she’s abandoned by her normal sized human parents ate the age of five. It’s stated by her father that she has already caused many “causalities.” They hope that the “holy mother,” will save her. Linlin remains still in the spot that her parents left her all night. At this point you can’t help but feel sorry for her. While, she remains ignorant of her harmful behavior, it’s clearly understandable that her parents felt it was necessary to abandon her.
Introducing Sister Carmel
We flashback to a century ago when two captains of the Giant Warrior Pirates, Dorry and Brogy, are about to be executed, Sister Carmel saves them. She argues that the killing of the giants will result in a war on humanity. She aims to create a racial harmonious world, establishing the Sheep’s House. 37 years later she finds Linlin and offers her a home. The other children with Sister Carmel teases Linlin, stating that she naive to believe that her parents are returning.
Linlin tries to fit in
Initially, Linlin is happy to find that she now lives in an environment made to accommodate her size. Linlin reveals that while she has an innocent view of the world, but her massive strength and ignorance of how the world works causes her to cause undue harm. Linlin attempts to stop the fight between a bear and wolf, she is able to discern that fighting is wrong, but doesn’t realize that putting the wolf and bear together in a cage will come at a cost. She continues to try and “help,” others but only manages to hurt them. She breaks the bones of Eyri, attempting to squash a mosquito.
Her ignorance of the other races results in her trying to help by tearing limbs or fins off of the longarm tribe and merpeople. One important constant is Sister Caramel’s forgiving Linlin for everything. Linlin gets a taste of selma and after begin asks to fast, Linlin can’t control her hungry and goes on a rampage, destroying the village Elbaf. Lord Yorle has decided that he cannot forgive Linlin this time, attacking her. This chapter has garnered some sympathy for Big Mom, but it’s only small. She may not be intentional in her behavior, however, she is a major threat to society. I predict that during the battle Sister Caramel gets killed by Linlin.
Big Mom fails to land a hit on Jinbe and Luffy, meanwhile, Brook destroys the picture of Mother Carmel. He reveals himself to everyone much to the surprise of the Big Mom pirates. Many of the wedding guests think that he actually pulled his own skin off resulting a lot of comedic moments. Big Mom’s reaction is more muted than previously expected.
Pudding meanwhile attempts to shoot Sanji, but he effortlessly manages to dodge her shots. She is attacked by her older brother, Charlotte Daifuku. He ate the Hoya Hoya no Mi, that gave him the ability to summon a genie from his body. Diafuku’s genie attacks Sanji, meanwhile, Caesar begins his part in the plan. Bege attacks Luffy to keep his cover, Jinbe is concerned that Big Mom hasn’t reacted yet.
Pedro faces off against Charlotte Oven, who ate the Netsu Netsu no Mi. Oven remembers Pedro from the first invasion and promises that he will not show him any mercy. Nami, Chopper and Carrot remain in the cake waiting for their moment to strike. Brook is decapitated and his head rolls towards Luffy, Judge cries out for help as he and his family is held at gunpoint.
Judge says that “there should be honor among thieves,” his sons are critical of his behavior, due to the fact that his children are sociopaths. Meanwhile, Brook tells Luffy that they need to show Big Mom the broken picture. Bege notices that Katakuri has completely “turned white,” meaning that he’s seen a “horrible future.” Bege tells everyone to get ready for Big Mom’s scream, while he tells Katakuri that “Katakuri can see a bit into the future, anyone has the power to change it.”
Another great chapter. The plan isn’t going as planned considering Big Mom doesn’t instantly begin screaming. Brook is of course the comic relief of this chapter. The abilities of Charlotte’s Daifuku and Oven are interesting. Daifuku genie is the most interesting power of the two, not much is know about the genies abilities but it’s strong enough to combat Sanji. Judge being a coward wasn’t really surprising nor was the consequences of how he raised his sons. I think it’s unlikely that they are killed without a fight. I feel they will be rescued by the Strawhat’s but be ungrateful, and probably won’t help the Strawhat’s fight Big Mom. Finally, I’m hoping to see a full fight between Bege and Katakuri could be awesome.
