Natsu torches Madmorl’s and burns through his armor. Wendy now nude, is given some clothing from the spirit world. Lucy, Carla, Gray, and Happy get back together, and prepare to fight Skullion and Madmorl. Shocking everyone, Madmorl gets up after Natsu’s match. Natsu’s flames begin emitting heat, resulting in Kyria’s clothing melting. Ezra’s is unaffected because she’s wearing the “armor of the flame empress.” Kyria attacks claiming that “we’re going to eat these flames.”
Ezra isn’t phased by this and she attacks using Flame Empress’s Rising Fire Cutter. Kyria is teleported by Skullion. Natsu and the rest of Fairy Tail impress Skullion. He reveals that they are no longer interested in the Water God. They now want the White Witch, he reveals that there are more of them. Skullion then leaves, promising that they will return. Their ship dissipates into ash. The Water God Dragon awakens and tells Caramille’s to run.
The villains of the series so far are too generic. Skullion in particular has thin characterization. While it’s likely that they will get more depth, but so far their behavior is predictable. That said a guild of Dragon Eaters seem interesting. I haven’t been able to really get into this series yet. It’s only the 16th chapter, but I feel something is missing. I like reading it but not as excited for the chapter like I am for other series.
One of my goals for 2019 is to add more varied content to my blog. List have been popular for a while and of course they’re simple and easy posts to create. First I decided to make some rules:
I’m only going to include anime characters from anime/manga I’ve read or watched. Mainly because I would be familiar with their powers.
I’m only going to include ONE character per series. This is difficult to do, because there are many strong characters in any given series, but I want some variety.
I think it will be difficult to determine how each character on the list would fare against each other, so I going to focus how strong they are within their series. However, I will be thinking how they compare relative to each other.
[Note] This list and any others will focus on characters that MOSTLY or significantly use the element. In this case water. What that would result in is having a list of characters that will have more that just the element in their abilities and I will be factoring these other abilities in as well.
5. Kyogre (Pokemon)
Kyogre is a Water-type legendary Pokemon that was introduced during the third Generation of the Pokemon series. A massive Pokemon modeled after a whale. Kyogre possessed the ability to “expand the oceans” and has control over water and rain. Kyogre is a part of the “weather trio” along with Groudon and Rayquaza.
Kyogre was given a power up during the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games. Called “Primal Reversion,” a Pokemon undergoes a transformation “restore a Pokemon’s true powers as the Pokémon absorbs the energy of nature to greatly increase its power.” Like most legendary Pokemon, Kyogre is capable of using many different types of TM’s. It has a powerful signature move called Origin Pulse. The move shoots multiple orbs and fire energy beams.
Why is Kyogre on this 5th on this list?
Despite his worldwide weather effects, Kyogre is largely limited in it’s ability. Very passive in nature Kyogre isn’t much of a fighter to begin with and it only really has one significant move, Origin Pulse.
Harribel is the former 3rd Espada in Aizen’s army. She eventually becomes the ruler of Hueco Mundo. Like most Espada, Harribel has tremendous skill with a sword. She’s capable of holding her own against a captain-level Shinigami like Hitsugaya. She was even able to hold off a captain and two lieutenant-level Visored together.
She possessed incredible spiritual power and was highly perceptive during combat. Tier was considered to be a master tactician. Her hierro “harden skin” was strong enough to survive Hitsugaya’s attacks without much damage. She also has abilities typical to most Espada like Cero, Sonido and Descorrer.
When Harribel uses her Resurreccion, she releases her special ability. With her new abilities she is able to manipulate water. Her best water techniques are:
Hirviendo – Pointing her blade out, Harribel boils any form of water which comes close to it, including ice, and deflects it around her.
La Gota – Harribel can condense large amounts of water around her blade before firing it as a blast which resembles a shark tooth. She can fire multiple blasts in rapid succession with relative ease. The blasts strike with enough force to demolish houses.
Cascada – Harribel launches a rushing surge of water at her enemy. The torrent of water is large enough to cover several town blocks.
Why is Tier Harribel 4th on this list?
I my opinion Harribel is a far superior fighting tactician than the passive Kyogre. She has a larger variety of techniques as well. However, most of her abilities are shared with other Espada and she only has a handful of unique techniques.
Juvia is a S-Class Mage from the Fairy Tail Guild. She can produce, control and manipulate water. She has a variety of different ways she can produce water, for example she can produce water blades that are strong enough to slice through rock or metal. She can also turn herself into water, allowing physical and magical attack pass through her without damaging her. Some of her best techniques are:
Water Lock – Juvia has the ability to materialize a large circular mass of water, and unlike the Water Dome, it contains no oxygen inside. This spell is used to capture enemies and incapacitate them by suffocation.
Sierra – A full body transformation resembling Water Body, used by Juvia in a state of strong agitation or other influencing emotion (e.g. jealousy or rage). Her strong emotions cause her full body transformation to heat up/boil. This is a short ranged attack which displays enormous, unpredictable speed.
Water-Make – a form of Molding Magic that lets Juvia create, or at the very least manipulate existing water. The scope of usage is not limited to just pure water, but also to things that contain it in large quantities, such as blood.
Why is Juvia 3rd on this list?
I didn’t list all the techniques she possess, her variety is far superior to Kyogre and Tier. While Kyogre can influence the seas, Juvia has more direct control over it. Unlike, Tier, Juvia can even turn herself into water and has defensive water abilities as well.
Tobirama was considered one of the most powerful shinobi ever. He was considered the “fastest shinobi,” at least during his time. His chakra control was such that he could use difficult techniques with just one hand seal. Like most ninja, Tobirama had a large number of sill sets, from summoning techniques, barrier ninjutsu to the Shadow Clone Technique.
Tobirama was an “adept sensor.” He could “accurately detect the presence and location of targets in the surrounding area. He could even sense persons countries away, identify a target’s ancestry from their chakra signature, and even pinpoint a target’s exact location while blinded,” simply by touching his finger to the ground.
While, he could use all nature transformations he mastered Water Release. He could create large amounts of water without a water source. He could use high level water jutsu at any time. He could shoot high pressure water beams that could slice through his targets, create walls of water and cover an entire battlefield with water. Some of his best techniques were:
Flying Thunder God Technique – he could instantly teleport himself and/or other targets to any location marked with his seal.
Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation – which revives the dead into immortal, regenerating bodies.
Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags – to take advantage of the revived bodies’ natural advantages, using them in kamikaze-like attacks to create near-infinite chains of explosions on a target. He was said to use it whenever he needed to clear a map.
Why is Tobirama 2nd on this list?
To be honest Juvia has superior water abilities than Tobirama. What puts him ahead of her is his other abilities, Space-Time ninjutsu Flying Thunder God Technique is a powerful S-Rank technique. He has a number of techniques that surpass Juvia’s.
Jinbe was the second captain of the Sun Pirates. A former Shichibukai he possessed massive strength. He is so far the strongest fishman seen in the One Piece series. Despite his large size he move quite fast as well. Jinbe also has impressive endurance, able to take a “baptizing” in boiling water.
He was able to hold his own against Big Mom, he even took a direct sword attack from her. While in water he becomes even more powerful, he an excellent swimmer and he’s able to “suppress” any fear he may have. He has mastered Fish-Man Karate, he’s a great strategists, he can communicate with fish life and has become skilled in Haki. His most powerful abilities are:
Fish-Man Karate – According to Jinbe, the secret of Fish-Man Karate is mastery of the water in the user’s direct vicinity, using its power to send powerful waves impacting the water within the opponent’s body. Because every creature has a high percentage of water in their body, the users of Fish-Man Karate are able to battle opponents that are usually highly resistant (if not immune) against blows and punches.
Busoshoku Haki – is a form of Haki that allows the user to use their spirit to create, in essence, an invisible armor around themselves.
Buraikan – A secret technique of the Fish-Man Karate. Jinbe concentrates in one hand a large amount of water that he shoots at close range against his opponent. The impact is so strong that the water penetrates the opponent’s body and gets out from the other end.
Gyojin Jiujitsu: Water Heart – Jinbe plunges into the sea. Using a jujitsu technique (unarmed martial art that originates in the bushi battle methods), Jinbe centralizes in both hands an enormous amount of water, to then transfer it to the surface.
Why is Jinbe on the top of the list?
Simply put he possess all the qualities of the previous four. He has great water techniques, intelligence, physical strength, speed, varied types of techniques and he is able to do battle in water, under water and on land.
In this chapter Team Natsu finally encounters Mercuphobia. Kyria prepares to attack him but is teleported by someone called Skarion. Their bodies disappeared in ash. The team figures that it was likely some sort of Ash magic that is used to “move from one place to the other.” Regardless, Mercuphobia asks Natsu if he “came to slay him.” Natsu surprisingly doesn’t appear to be eager for a fight. He responds, “not exactly.” Natsu admits that they are here to seal him but isn’t sure that they’re going to if he’s a “good guy.”
Team Natsu feels a sense of relief. They are under the impression that they won’rt have to “seal,” him now. However, Mercuphobia tells them that they “must seal him.” He decides that team Natsu are now his guest. He brings them to his palace, where he shows them his “underwater farm,” “medical facility,” and “watch tower.” Everyone feels that the water god is “good.” He tells them that he actually has “killed many humans in the past.” He had a change of heart over the years.
Mercuphobia informs them that he can “no longer control his powers.” He believes he must be killed to prevent his powers from effecting other cities. Before he dies he must do something. It’s not elaborated on before we see Kyria and her group. We are introduced to Mage Guild Diabolos Corpse Dragon Skarion Raider who suggests that Mercuphobia is a “false” water god. The water god’s interaction with team Natsu was surprising. Now that he’s change it became more difficult to see him evil.
The I was evil until this special person changed me has been done many time before. I don’t particular hate the trope but it’s a common one. That said he wouldn’t be as complicated without this change. If Mercuphobia isn’t evil anymore then some else must become the conflict. That remains to be seen as we find out what the water god must do. However, all this change seems to be fake or according to Skarion, the water god is. That appears to be a waste of a character but we shall see what he meant.
Team Natsu arrives at a hotel in Elmina, they’re greeted by a fish that’s wearing a top of a tux. Natsu and Happy plan on eating it, only for it to transform into a human. The fish turn man greets them, when questioned whether he’s a fish or human, he confirms that he’s a fish. However, he quickly remembers that he has a date, and runs off to meet with someone named Sameko. He warns team Natsu that they must “drink the complimentary beverage left in your rooms.”
According to him, “humans will not be able to live here.” Gray awakens the following morning to find that he’s underwater, but he can breathe and talk. The entire town becomes submerged in the ocean. The receptionist finally introduces himself as, Kashima, the manager of hotel journey. When Gray asks about the water God, Kashima and the other fish turn on them and attack. Meanwhile, Touka reveals that she uses “water-type magic,” She also reveals that she has a tail.
There wasn’t much in this chapter regarding the dragons, but the world building was great. Fairy Tail’s biggest drawback was never it’s world-building, but it bad use of power scaling that is typical for shonen manga series. This chapter only briefly switches to the other members of Fairy Tail, hopefully they will continue to matter in this new series.
I’m really enjoying the chapter’s so far. Without having to introduce characters, the series can just start. Fairy Tail 100 years quest feels familiar but fresh. Team Natsu arrives at Southern Giltena in the Valeria Region. They encounter weird “walking jellyfish,” Natsu’s first instinct is to eat them, the jellyfish attempt to jump into Lucy’s and Natsu’s mouth. Wendy blows the rest away, but Natsu eats his. Lucy says that her mouth is “numbed.”
Regardless, Giltena is presented as a completely new continent. This certainly allows for Atsuo Ueda to tell a relatively new story with an established series and known characters. I think that this should happen more than it does, Boruto is another series that has a new illustrated and writer, while the original creator maintain influence. The quest is similar, seal all five of the dragons. For some reason I assumed they would fight them all at the same time.
That was obviously a dumb assumption. Anyway, they will face one at a time. The first dragon is the water God dragon, Mercfovia. Once worshiped as a God in Elmina, team Natsu will head there to find clue of it’s location. In a flashback it is revealed that the reward for finishing the quest is “anything they desire.” It’s unlikely that he really mean “anything,” but it will be interesting to see what they as for. Meanwhile, Gajeel and Juvia begin to investigate (with Gajeel in a detective outfit) Touka. Finally, as team Natsu arrive in Elmina they are watched by two people.
Chapter 2, Pedigree of Dragon Slayers, begins with Ezra questioning Elefseria “who he is.” Considering that Magia Dragon is suppose to be a guild, the fact that there’s no wizards surprises her. Elefseria explains that all the wizards had died. With new wizards joining the newer guilds, the old guild were left without members. Natsu and Wendy “smell” something weird, Natsu asks him if he’s human. He reveals that he is human.
Elefseria has survived this long due to his turning into a dragon after overusing his dragon-slaying magic. In typical manga fashion, Elefseria begins to perv out on Lucy, transforming himself into a tiny version of himself and ends up in Lucy’s cleavage. Anyway, he reveals that he taught himself dragon-slaying magic. The only wizard to survive the quest is Gildarts.
They all sign oaths saying “they won’t talk about the 100 year quest, and that he or the Magic Council won’t be responsible if they die.” Lucy intimidated, questions whether she should go but she remembers that Virgo told her that ” she would have a fateful reunion on Giltena.” The quest is to “seal away the five dragons of Giltena known as “The Five God Dragons“. Each dragon is stated to rival the power of Acnologia. Dragons in Fairy Tail never really seem all that powerful or threatening compared to other wizards. It also seems that most wizards have dragon-slaying magic undermining how special the magic is.
As I’ve written before I’m rather lukewarm on the Fairy Tail series. It was confirm a while ago that a sequel to Fairy Tail will be illustrated by Atsuo Ueda with storyboards by Hiro Mashima. The sequel takes place directly after the events of the original. After defeating, Acnologia and Zeref the Fairy Tail guild is better than ever. The chapter begins in the year X633, an elderly man stand among corpses of a village as he states that “magic is not evil and that wizards must come together as one.” This day marked the day that first wizarding guild was established.
In the present, Max introduces 3 new members to Fairy Tail. Only one manages to remain as Laxus scares two of them off. The remaining member is Touka, she claims that she wants to “be in the same guild as Natsu.” She claims that he’s her “darling sweetheart,” stunning everyone. Natsu apparently rescued her from bandit’s a year prior. Makarov explains that Natsu wasn’t presence because he was attempting to fulfill the “Hundred Year Quest.”
The Fairy Tail universe is expanded as we see Team Natsu on the continent of Giltena. They arrive at the “world oldest guild,” Magia Dragon. While in the building Natsu and Wendy start to feel the presence of a dragon. This dragon introduces himself as “the Law Dragon Elefseria,” he asks them to fulfill there wishes. Fairy Tail has always been a rather ordinary manga, likable and well drawn the series didn’t really move the shonen genre forward. Fairy Tail doesn’t need to do this to be good, however, being so predictable can be disappointing.
The art-style of Atsuo Ueda is pretty good. It is very similar to that of Hiro Mashima, although the characters do feel more mature, detailed and taller. I don’t know what to expect from this series considering that Ueda is different from Mashima. Like Eden Zero, I don’t expect Fairy Tail 100 Year’s Quest to be much different. Furthermore, Fairy Tail has seen multiple spin-off’s that varied in length, I wonder how long this manga series will be. A series centered around one quest no matter how difficult probably won’t be 500 chapters long.
Porlyusica tells the others that Juvia and Gray will be fine due to Brandish and Wendy’s aid. The mass inside Natsu’s body cannot be alter with Brandish’s magic. Porlyusica admits that even her abilities a insufficient to help Natsu. They assume that the mass is E.N.D, meanwhile, Natsu’s body begins to emit smoke. Lucy feels a cold breeze coming from Natsu. We see Natsu’s, inside of his heart according to Zeref.
Zeref tells Natsu that he will die soon. He says that he came into the heart of Natsu to fill in the gaps in his memories. Natsu is shown his parents from years ago, and the village was attacked by a dragon, Natsu, his mother and father were killed. Zeref claims that he resurrected Natsu as his final demon E.N.D. He said that he was entrusted to Igneel, where he meet the other dragon slayers like Gajeel. Zeref disappears and is replaced with Sting, who offers to show what is living inside of Natsu.
Sting verses Larcade
While, Sting searches for Rogue and Lector, he smells the others and heads in their direction. He arrives to save the his friends from Larcade. He’s quickly dismissive of Sting’s abilities. Larcade uses his tentacle attack on Sting, who proceeds to consume it, claiming that “nothing white” can hurt him. He says that he doesn’t see them getting along and Larcade smells like Natsu. This chapter was a slow one, but a good change in pace. The being in Natsu’s “heart,” was confusing. I found it sad that Natsu actually was killed during the dragon attack. I don’t have a great deal of faith that Sting will defeat Larcade, mostly because he’s already injured.
If you want one of these J-Lists has got you covered.
Jellal lies beaten on the ground of battlefield. He finds it difficult to comprehend that he was defeated along with the rest of Crime Sorciere, by August. After stepping on Jellal, August asks why he would put himself in opposition to Zeref. Jellal states that he did learn his lesson and saw the light, meaning Ezra. August informs Jellal that Zeref has a child, a son name Rahkeid. As August leaves, Jellal attempts to stand so he can protect Erza.
Rahkeid Dragneel faces off against Kagura
Meanwhile, Rahkeid Dragneel introduces himself to Kagura. He’s the child of Zeref and Mavis, and nephew of Natsu. Rahkeid attacks Kagura with Blades of light, she easily deflects them, demanding that he get of the hilltop and face her. Kagura single handily cuts the hill in half, Rahkeid responds by using his magic to create tentacles made of light. Like this series try- Fairy Tail: Collection One (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
He believes that Kagura will succumb to the pleasure the tentacles induce. Kagura bites her own tongue, countering the effects of Rahkeid spell. Kagura quickly steps in to attack Rahkeid. However, Rahkeid blocks her attack with his bare hands. He tells Kagura that he, along with August, Eileen are exceptional. Rahkeid strikes her with his fingers. She collapses, leaving the rest of Fairy Tail shocked. August implies that only Rahkeid’s mother Mavis can defeat him.
Rahkeid, Zeref, Natsu and Mavis
I was impressed with Kagura’s fighting in this chapter. However, I think it would have been better if they had a more convincing battle. The family relation in Fairy Tail is starting to get convoluted. Regardless, I have a hard time to imaging Zeref and Mavis together. It’s likely that Mavis and Rahkeid will face off against each other. It think that this will be an interesting battle, however, I would imagine that Mavis will be apprehensive about fighting her son.
You want this adorable Pikachu Mochi Mochi Cushion get ithere!
Yoarashi Inasa, aka Gale, uses his wind powers to move rubble with surgical precision. However, he is penalized for being too reckless. He response favorably and ends his technique. The students continue to discuss what they should or shouldn’t do in regard to the situation. The exam is clearly designed to teach the students to work together and hone their quirks. If he students learn the scope and limitation of their quirks, so that they can be more effective heroes.
However, according to one civilian the students “waste too much resources” and aren’t likely to pass as a result. Katsuki runs into two civilians with arm injuries, he rudely tells them to keep moving. He concludes that “refuses to help them since they can still move their legs.” He is actually not penalized for not helping them, but for his rude language. Izuku brings another injured child to the healing shelter, meanwhile, Gang Orca arrives, adding another problem onto the current situation. The testing has gotten more interesting and it seems that the students aren’t doing too well.
It’s important that the students learn to work together, and even some of the student’s have decided to work with other classes. With, Gang Orca now an additional problem has increased the difficultly. I wonder how the students can balance the injured civilians with Gang Orca. I can assume that some of the more fight oriented students like, Katsuki will fight and students like Izuku will save the civilians. It will be interesting to see which behavior is ranked higher.
Chapter 505 – Trump Card
Eileen, the scarlet despair, uses her “enchant,” spell to change the soldiers into “berserker’s.” The soldiers abilities are enhanced, but they lose their ability to reason. Ezra attacks the berserker, to no avail as they are impervious to injury. With the large number of soldiers the Fairy Tail guild, is in trouble. Makarov accessing the situation aims to end the fight with the use of Fairy Law. The members of Fairy Tail are excited at the use of this spell and they feel that the battle will be won as a result.
Mavis arrives and informs Makarov that she has a plan that can save everyone. Makarov tells her that he will sacrifice himself for his “family.” He enacts his final spell, “Fairy Law.” His sacrifice has all the fairy tail members in tears. I think that Makarov’s sacrifice was hasty, as Mavis may have had a plan. He also seemed to think that Mavis didn’t love or care for the members of Fairy Tail. Anyway, his death will likely turn the tide of battle in their favor.
Chapter 842 – the Power of Fullness
Luffy continues his consumption of the biscuit soldiers as Cracker creates more. Nami comes to Luffy’s aid by using rain to soften the soldiers. Luffy seems full and Nami tells Cracker that Luffy has “unlimited hunger.” Luffy continues to eat the soldiers, meanwhile, at Sweet City, the civilians are shocked when they see Chopper and Carrot running through the mirrors. In Germa Kingdom, the preparations for the wedding is ready and Sanji is healed by his sister.
Sanji and his family begin their trip to Whole Cake Chateau. We return to the Seducing Woods, where we see that Luffy has reached his limit. Cracker believes that this is his opportunity to attack Luffy. Luffy uses his current size to reveal a new form of Gear Fourth, Tankman. Cracker is unimpressed and attacks Luffy with Pretzel. His attacks are absorbed by Luffy, a long with Crackers entire body. Luffy shoots out Cracker like a cannon ball.
The story feels like it’s reaching toward a climax. Sanji is finally coming to Whole Cake Chateau, while Chopper and Carrot seem to be heading there as well. I think Cracker has finally been defeated and with Nami’s new found power over the homies, they would be heading there as well. I like that Nami got to be more effective in this fight. I wonder how far the homies will follow her.
