I’m not entirely certain what is meant by “gameplay.” Genre? According to Wikipedia, gameplay, ” is a term used to define the way players interact with a certain video or computer game.” It’s still not clear. Does that mean the literal controls? They console? All of the above? Regardless, I’m going to choose genre. Based on my gaming library the best gameplay is Third Person Shooters.
TPS are defined as ” a genre of 3D action games in which the player character is visible on-screen, and the gameplay consists primarily of shooting.” This genre features games like, Fornite, Gears of War , Mass Effect , Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid. The third person perspective is just superior to me. To be honest, I use to hate first person shooters. Being able to see your avatar in the environment, is simpler and more enjoyable.
I found that my depth perception was off when playing FPS. Much of this has been fixed with better game designing. TPS allow game developers to easier include, shooting, with platforming, puzzle solving and driving. You get the most balanced games that actually include some gameplay from other genre’s.
My instinct was to suggest that I don’t really care about video game soundtracks, but that wouldn’t be true. The soundtrack in the game of course is in the background. You might not notice because your so focused on playing but good ones are hard too ignore. Some video games create soundtracks that are just hit songs from any era, think Grand Theft Auto. Finally, a single song obviously doesn’t count.
For me the game that had the best soundtrack is Jet Grind Radio. The game was the first to use the now common “cel-shaded” visuals. Published by Sega on the Dreamcast in 2000, you controlled a member of a gang rollerblading and spraying graffiti. Your goal is to defeat the CEO of Rokkaku, Goji Rokkaku who plans to conquer the world with The Devil’s Contract ” a vinyl record which reportedly has the power to summon demons.” Anyway, the includes original and licensed songs.
The songs are varied in genre, from J-pop, hip hop, funk and trip hop. The series exposed me too different types of music I would normal not listen to. At this point in my life I NEVER listened to music from other countries, the soundtrack is well put together. Every entry feels like it belongs and they’re upbeat and catchy too. Unfortunately, Sega feels the need to continue to make Sonic games and haven’t made a sequel to this game. Until they come to their sense, I could still listen to the great soundtrack.
Tidus is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy X. Tidus is transported to the world of Spira, where he meets a new summoner named Yuna. He joins her and her guardians on a pilgrimage to defeat Sin. When Tidus learns that Sin is his father Jecht, Yuna teaches him ” how to smile even if he’s feeling sad.” Later, Tidus becomes jealous of Maester Seymour as he becomes infatuated with Yuna.
He even proposes to her, which she later accepts. Seymour is later killed by Tidus and the others, when it becomes clear that he’s evil. Throughout their adventures fighting monsters, Yuna and Tidus both grow closer. Watching them fall in love was subtle but sweet. However, they don’t end up happily ever after as Tidus disappears. When, Yuna sends the fayth to the Farplane, Tidus must go also because he’s a dream of the fayth (FFX’s story was rather confusing to me), he departs as she proclaims her love for him.
Navi is the a fairy who’s the navigator in the 1998 video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In game she is told by the Great Deku Tree to assist Link in his quest against Ganondorf. Navi in terms of gameplay acts as a guide that points things out in the environment and aids the player in learning the controls in game. She gives hints on how to defeat enemies and is used to lock on.
This is when she becomes annoying. Navi constantly interrupt’s the player with a “Hey!” or “Listen!” This is mostly limited to the begin the of game, but is so consistent that it makes the game feel like a chore sometimes. She’s also not very helpful, telling the player information that’s often redundant. However, even Navi couldn’t ruin on of the greatest games of all time.
I love the Assassin Creed series and they often possess interesting characters especially the main protagonists. While I prefer to experience the ancient Greek world of Odyssey and I liked Alexios, I have chosen, Ezio. First his name is cool. Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Italian nobility, he wasn’t a spoiled brat. He quickly becomes on of the best assassins ever. He not bad looking either. Ezio shows growth as the game progresses. He was designed as an open minded man, that’s not afraid to have some fun.
Like all Assassins, he possessed superhuman acrobatic abilities, free-running, stealth, a master of armed and unarmed combat. Ezio managed to unite the Codex, become a mentor of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins, saves the cities of Florence, Venice AND Rome from the Templar’s. He also aided in spreading the ideals of independence and free will throughout Italy. Finally, he becomes the teacher of the Chinese Assassin Shao Jun. He’s considered to be the important assassin in the series.
In 2015 I started the 30 Day Video Game Challenge. I only got to day 4 the last time, however, I will be continuing the challenge from day 5 starting tomorrow. These challenges are always fun and I find they get a lot of engagement from viewers. Here’s the list (I changed #4 to Favorite Female character):
There are a whole host of female characters in video games today, Zelda, Lightning (from Final Fantasy) and of course Lara Croft (Tomb Raider). However, a more recent female character has in my opinion, has taken over. Bayonetta was introduced to us in 2010, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it was released for the Wii U in 2013.
Bayonetta was created by Hideki Kamiya, he wanted to have a female protagonist. She was one of two surviving “Umbran Witches”, and searches for answers regarding her forgotten past. Bayonetta is highly stylized from her costume made of her on hair, her “beehive” hairstyle and her fighting style. Bayonetta is a highly sexualize character. Many found this to be a problem, others saw this as an asset. Some found her depiction to be, “sexist, gross pandering, and it’s totally unnecessary”.
Computer and Video Games praised her “as more interesting than the game’s story line, describing her as the “sexiest collection of pixels [they’ve] ever seen”, though not a character they considered a sex object“. Bayonetta is a fearless fighter, who can hold her own if a fight against any adversary. She has style, bravery and a sense of humor are all qualities that make Bayonetta my favorite female video game character.
Mirror’s Edge is an action-adventure platform game. The game was set within a “futuristic dystopian society“. The main character, Faith, “act as couriers to transmit messages while evading government surveillance”. Her in game movements are inspired by parkour. This game featured a highly colored, and bright style. Mirror Edge was mostly well received, the game was considered unique.
However, it was criticized for a lackluster story, repetitive gameplay and length. It won the “Annual Interactive Achievement Award for Adventure Game of the Year”. The game wasn’t a flop, but managed to sell only a few million copies. While I would agree that the gameplay could have been smoother, I enjoyed the fresh mechanics and style.
My favorite character from video games is Link. Link is the main protagonist of The Legend of Zelda series. He’s a reincarnated version of the same character. He’s a Hylian, who travels through Hyrule, defeating forces of evil and saving princess Zelda. Link doesn’t speak, though he does make audible sounds. According to the creator of Link, Shigeru Miyamoto “He tried to make people identify with Link and have the opportunity to be heroes like the character“.
I think he was successful, and that is part of the reason why I love Link. Miyamoto said, “Link’s name comes from the fact that originally, the fragments of the Triforce were supposed to be electronic chips. The game was to be set in both the past and the future and as the main character would travel between both and be the link between them, they called him Link.” He is “renowned for his swordsmanship and fighting skill, such as his boomerang accuracy“. He often start off as an ordinary boy, before gaining in power. Ultimately, Link doesn’t have the most dynamic personality, but you can sense his desire to save the world. You can respect his courage in attempting to do so.
Last week I finally completed the “30 Day Anime Challenge”, so I thought I’d start another challenge. The “30 Day Video Game Challenge”, similar to the anime challenge, this challenge features 30 “challenges/questions” based on experiences with video-games.
When I was five my mother got me and my brother a SNES and at the time it included a copy of “Super Mario World”. Super Mario World is the fifth title in the acclaimed Mario Bros. series. Me and my brother played this game over and over. We had a ignorant concept of what “winning” was, so a few stages complete was all that was need to satisfy us.
We also had no idea that e could save our progress, so we always started from the beginning. However, this really wasn’t a problem, because at the time we though it was suppose to be that way. As a result I never actually beat the game, or the next few dozen games I got after. Like I said my concept of winning was different back then. Beating a game wasn’t necessary, just playing until you ran out of lives. Like most Nintendo games it was a lot of fun regardless.
