Episode 1 – To You, After 2,000 Years: The Fall of Shiganshina, Part 1
Part of the reason I decided to start this blog is to find anime and manga outside of the BIG three (One piece, Naruto and Bleach). One of the new anime I’ve been hearing great things about is “Attack on Titan”. Technically Attack on Titan isn’t new. The manga was released in September 2009. It’s published in Kodansha’s monthly Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine the series has to date sold over 20 million copies. The anime was adapted by Wit Studio and released in April 2013.
I must say that the reviews for this anime were accurate. I won’t spoil the story only tell you how I felt about it. The general tone of the episode seems rather dark. I must admit I like the tone that was set. The size of the ‘colossal titan’ alone is enough to generate fear for the characters. However, for some reason I find the smaller titans to be even scarier. The facial expression (or lack thereof) of the titans truly magnifies the tone of the anime. They’re emotionless, heartless, and driven to do one thing eat humans.
The humans were “protected” by a series of walls. Unfortunately, the same walls end up becoming somewhat like a cage that trapped them when the titans finally breach. Overall, the story seems interesting, the characters are sympathetic and the action is brutal (especially the ending). The animation is impressive and I like the detail of the titans. I’m sure the main character will save the day but I’m curious how he would do it. Will any other characters help? So have you watched Attack on Titan? If not I strongly recommend that you do.
