Boogiepop wa Warawanai Episode 03 Review

Tanaka Shiro searches for his girlfriend the now deceased Kamikishiro Naoko. Together, with Nitoki and Masami they search for Kirima Nagi to get her knowledge on Naoko’s disappearance. When they locate her she attacks them and ties them up, not knowing whether she can trust them or not. Echoes vouches for them and she releases them. It is here that Masami betray’s them, stabbing Echoes with a poisoned pen and slicing Nagi’s throat. Manticore appears and attacks Echoes.

Tanaka flees, abandoning Nitoki. Masami confesses his allegiance towards the Manticore. Defeated, Echoes activates his powers and returns to outer space. Masami sacrifices himself for Manticore, resulting in her becoming enraged. She threats to “kill everyone,” but Tanaka arrives with Boogiepop, killing the Manticore.

Nagi returns from the dead as she is resurrected by Echoes. Everyone returns to their normal state and Naoko saves humanity. If this anime was supposed to have the “no one is safe” feel, then this resurrection ruins all that. Supposedly this ended the first novel of the series, which makes it even more unnecessary to bring her back.

Boogiepop remains a bit of a mystery to me. The plot remains confusing due to the non-linear storytelling. My understanding is that this non-chronological sequencing is intentional. Maybe, this style of storytelling is an acquired taste, but I don’t like it. The animation isn’t particularly good in my opinion, especially the fight scene at the end of the episode. It was terrible. This episode represents the end of the first arc and the end of my reviewing this series. I keep reading other reviews to see if this series gets better with other arcs, but in the meantime I’m done with Boogiepop for now.
